Blog Subject:  V? WHAT THE HECK?!?! (Warning - Rant)

Okay, so I logged onto Facebook today. And I see this add featuring a pretty woman, weird reptilian eye, and a single blood red letter V in the background. I groan. Seriously. I just flat out groaned. Then, like the smuck I am, I clicked on the link. I watched the intro. It was totally borrowed from X-Files (the FBI badge closeups), the vibrating water (Independence day)... the long drawn out... WTF is going on? We have all races represented, all jobs... even the poor homeless depicted. And of course, the wheelchair guy almost getting killed by a falling Jesus. Enough already. Its classic classic cardboard. UGh.

ABC's Version of V

They Arrive TONIGHT at 8/7c on ABC! Watch the first 8 minutes of the series premiere now: http://abc.go.com/watch/clip/v/FK_VVV/228990/239133?&clipId=239133

Now, is it just me or is anyone else tired of the same old stories being retold over and over again on TV? I loved V when it was out and I was a kid. Truthfully, the first time Diana ate a guinea pig, I just about died. It was about the scariest thing in the world. All those harvested bodies... I was absolutely scarred by it. Which is probably why I loved it and america loved it.

I used to run home and watch Battlestar Galactica too. I loved it. I wasn't so thrilled when I saw a new version that came out a few seasons ago. But I watched it anyhow, and truthfully thought the new version was fantastic. But herein lies my rant. Have you seen TV lately? Have you seen the movies? They are all remakes of old stories or cartoons turned into full length features (Spiderman 3 anyone?). About the only good thing I've seen lately was Transformers 1 & 2 but almost no original script movies. Sure you have your smattering of romantic comedies. You have your super hot best seller spy thrillers turned into full length feature films. You have mainstream junk like Twilight.

But where are all the writers? Where are all the good ideas and original plots? Where's the movies that will thrill me, have me on the edge of my seat, crying or laughing or absolutely charmed? Throwing aliens into Indiana Jones doesn't cut it for a surprise factor folks. I want a good old fashioned story that I've never seen before or read the book too. I don't want to watch another remake because I already know how they end.

It's no wonder I love writing for Mizahar. It's not predictable. I can't guess that the humans will whoop alien flesh-eating lizard people ass and call ourselves glorious heroes. I want realistic drama. I want something like "Shining Through" or "The Shawshank Redemption." "Stardust" was great. But they are so few and far between. I still can't believe they haven't done a second part to "The Golden Compass."

Its just so... so super disappointing to see V remade. Even if its "Battlestar Galactica" fabulous.. we still know how it ends... who the main characters are... and that humanity is being processed like beef. How about a new plot? How about a new twist?

Truthfully? ABC you disgust me.

You have got a point, but I can answer your question as well.

TV and Film. As a media institution, they are afraid of new ideas and will stick with the classic formulas because of this. I mean has anyone seen a horror moive recently? The formulae for all of them is almost exactly the same. But then again, maybe its because horror as a genre is very formulaic. I don't know I'm just your simple, average run of the mill Media Student. :P

Also as a market, Film and TV are incredibly saturated. You have certain digital providers offering over 700 channels, with only 1 in 50 ever producing a good or worthwhile piece of film or TV. Then you have the HUGE EFFECTS AUDIENCE THAT EAT EVERYTHING SPOON FED CRAP WATCHING TV!!! (Really don't like that theory.) These people don't like anything out of the box or different from the hegemony.

Now that's not to say that its all worthless. You have got series like True Blood that are finally getting some credit, or the one about the detective that hunts serial killers and kills them. (Forgot the name of that one.)

Here in the UK we have one advantage over the rest of the world. (Big up the UK! :D) We have the BBC. A publicly owned broadcaster that produce TV series, Documentaries and Films not for ratings, but to entertain their audience. The BBC doesn't make any money from ratings, as it legally can not advertise, because its owned by the public. It gives its producers free reign on what they write or procure to a point. I mean there is an amazing TV series that is currently beginning the filming of its second called Being Human. Its about three essentially dysfunctional people living in a house, the twist? Ones a vampire, trying to stop taking blood, the another a werewolf with confidence issues and the lasts a ghost that can't leave the house.Quite dark with some humour. I love it.

Now the BBC has flaws. I'll admit, and it is far from perfect, but it is something that make me very proud. :D

I'd agree with you completely if it wasn't for Inception.
so now it's only 90% true to me.

OH and yeah V sucks, I watched 5 episodes to judge for myself, it wasted my life. so bad.

YES omg YES

Diana. She was great, perfect smirky, snarky amazing! And they made her Hollywood slick where even her damn breathing must be photoshopped to plastic. They took away every nuance that held any meaning! They stole the soul of a show I loved deeply and shat on it. Hard.

The only thing they come up with now that's not yet another remake (of someone else' work!) every 5 years, is mindless hacker slasher crap with no purpose. *stomps off in total agreement*
