Hello Everyone I do not have school tomorrow so I decided to tackle a blog since I really do not need to go to bed. Todays topic is really just what is cheesing me off. Although I know what I want to rant about is by far not a new topic it is still one that really twists my whiskers if you know what I mean. The topic of the day is the balance of power. It exists in very many places. In some places it is very easy to see and in others there is complete chaos due to the lack of it. The truth of it is that there always needs to be power, it is sadly the evident truth. The thing is, it does not need to be an overbearing power. It can simply be an overseer nudging wrongdoers in the right direction or even a kind babysitter who plays with the kids she watches. No one needs to shove their power down other's throats, it is just something everyone wants to do once in their life. We want to know how it feels for people to be under our thumb. What shows our true power is when we have complete control and choose not to use it. A true leader is not one who exerts all of their power but steps back and lets their subordinates work as they should. I'd like to think that is how I run things. I like who ever I am working with (whether in Avanthal or else where) to feel like they have control, not just me. I understand that at times the "leader" needs to lead and take charge, please do not see this as me saying that I let my Vanthas walk all over me. I'm just saying that a group, whether it be a country, a roleplaying city, or even a small group of students in a club cannot reach their full potential if one person is ruling over everyone with an iron fist and an air of sadism. That is why if I am ever in a place where I am in charge I am very open to criticism and suggestions. Of course this does not mean one should bust in and start telling me all of my flaws. That tends to tick me off a bit. I love to know how I can do better but when a person who really knows nothing of me or my projects and ideas starts to nit pick my work I do tend to get a but catty. Anyway, now to rant about the reason I am ranting about power. As most people know by now I am a HUGE choir dork. I am in my school's best choir and I am also in Glee club. Glee is fun by a few of the girls in my choir class and everyone things that just because I am not the person in front of the club bossing everyone around that I have no clue what I am talking about. The truth is, I am the most experience Alto in the club. Still, the freshies really do not like me because I try and keep them in order when they start to get off topic. Today the girls (Alto's and Sopranos) and the boys (Tenors and Basses) had to practice separately. One of the people in charge of the club asked me to be in charge of the girls for the day so I took them into a separate room and tried to get everyone to practice. Needless to say, a group of freshmen and sophomores did not listen to me because (and quote) "You are not in charge, no one is in charge". At one point I had a first year alto telling me what to do. I am usually a VERY easygoing person but finally I looked at her and handed over my sheet music saying "You know what, if you know so much about leading the choir you do it". I stepped back and chaos ensued. Later on I found out that the girls complained about me being "too bossy". The only thing I took these girls to do was separate into vocal groups and sing. I really do not see how that is being bossy, especially when I was told to instruct them. I am happy to say though that my friend Alex (the one who told me to instruct the girls practice) gave them a talking to when they complained about me being bossy. He told them "Sarah was being bossy for the sole reason that I told her to being in charge of you guys. She is a senior and a four year choir student in Chamber Choir. All of you are freshman and she knows what she is doing. She has been doing this longer than you have been in high school". Win... So that was my rant. I just felt like complaining. Thanks for joining me on the ride. Cheers, Sarah |
