More thoughts on slavely RP by Shayna on September 9th, 2013, 9:51 pm
Ok some more random thoughts about playing a slave as a main character. I am thoroughly over the shy quiet slave. It's almost a cop out, people who are afraid to drive an RP they make slave characters who are shy and quiet. So that they never have to direct the RP, never have to guide it. It makes people who DO want to guide, who DO want to make a dynamic character kind of shy away from PCing a slave. Fortunately I have not found, yet, an overabundance of cop-out slave PC's here. They do tend to peter out when they realize how incredibly dull it is posting only reactionary posts.
That being said, how does one play a slave that is ok with her lot in life withOUT being a cop out? Remember slaves have feelings too, and even if they are ok with being a slave does not mean that they will love every Freeborn and respect everyone.
An easy way to make a great angsty plotline is to make no bones about ones feelings to a said Freeborn. Now you probably ICly wouldn't be able to clock them a good one, but there are all kinds of passive aggressive things one can do in an RP that would not break the civility of slave to freeborn but make it very interesting to say the least. Then build onto that plot, find freeborns who are sympathetic to slaves, icly befriend them, use them to plot against your freeborn enemies. muahaha I need more threads now |

Finally Springtime! by Lavine on May 7th, 2013, 9:21 pm
I have decided on a change of pace. Today, we are going to celebrate rather than rant. (Who has my applause sign?) Spring is absolutely, positively here in the Midwest. From my eternal position at my bedroom desk, I can hear squirrels chattering and birds squawking angrily at my murderous cat. The sun has warmed the Earth and brought sun-kissed life to our wretched, snowy wasteland. We pulled out all the weeds and my yard is beginning to bloom. Flowers, flowers everywhere! Now, before I burst into absolute song, let's see what this means for school life. School is almost out- we are thisclose- and yet, so far. Teachers are finally cracking down (Can I get an Amen?) and students are forced into obedience. Although there is complaint about the new rules, I don't agree with the majority. (Psshh, did I ever?) Yes, they do make you have a pass to go into the hallway. If you were a teacher's pet like moi, you would have no problem getting one. No, they don't accept late work anymore and, yes, they are a teensy bit stricter with grading. If your overall grade was above a stinking D minus, you wouldn't have to worry about those zeros! Instead, you could be rockin' the A minus like, ahem, yours truly. Don't even get me started on the absences. Okay, okay, deep breath, calm yourself girl. As you might be able to infer, my school year is wrapping up nicely. Teachers love me, my family is content with my grades and behaviors, and (some of my) classmates tolerate me. Last but not least, a shout out to y'all still hangin' on to the winter blues, enjoy it! While Winter might not be as wonderful as a fully-fledged Spring, all seasons have a good side. Sometimes, it just takes a very...extremely...tremendously...optimistic person to see some of them! If you aren't an optimist, find one! I just so happen to be available Saturday if you need a little help. ... [ Continued ]

Character Synopsis by Reeves on July 26th, 2010, 2:32 pm
So I'm brand new, in a totally unfamiliar world of which I find little to relate to - exactly what I've been after. But what should my character be like?
In the past I've always portrayed the youthful wanderer type - making contacts and friends along the way, but never really having anything to tie him down to one specific area. Not a strong fighter, or mage, but capable of holding his own.
It grew boring.
It was after re-reading Terry Pratchett's Night Watch for the zillionth time that I thought "Well why not create a character portraying some characteristics of different detectives, set in an unfamiliar setting (at least to me?)"
Sam Vimes is an arrogant, egotistical, maniacal, cunning, alcoholic bastard. But he's got strong morals, and fights for what he believes in. And he can't be bribed.
My character would base some characteristics off Vimes, but have some of his own - his willingness to change his ways for the sake of his 5 year old daughter. Having just initially set up his agency within Syliras, we'll have to see what awaits for him down the road.
It'll be a fun challenge - a change from the norm!

Being Jen & The Secret of Happiness by Gossamer on January 19th, 2010, 11:05 am
I have learned, throughout life, what makes me happy isn't always what makes other people happy. I think a great deal about happiness. It might be because so many people around me are not happy. It doesn't matter if I'm talking about people I know online or people I interact with daily in my life. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out why they aren't happy - not to improve their lives - but to truthfully avoid my life becoming theirs. That might not make a lot of sense to you, which is fine, but truthfully I think that this the key to happiness. We all have a foundation. That foundation is our personality. Personalities rarely conform to societies rules and regulations, nor do they ever usually follow along with the status quo. You have to work with what your dealt. It's a great deal like your phenotypic expression. You look like what you look like (due to genetics and how those gene's express themselves), and you truthfully can't change your black/bronze/white/red/chartreuse skin color any more than you can change the foundation of your personality. Popeye said "I am what I am." He was so right. So, what exactly is that? Who is Jen? Seriously. It's a terribly hard question to answer. If you take a look deep inside yourself right now, most people would start waxing eloquently about their nobility, their kick ass writing ability, their superior storytelling abilities/grammar/spelling, their self-sacrificing persona... but that would all be bullshit wouldn't it? Oh hell yes. If you start thinking of yourself immediately (if you paused a minute to play my game and say "Who is X?") in any of those categories, the first thing you need to dub yourself is a liar. There's a lot of them out there. Grats. That would be part of your foundation. The foundation is the truth about who you are. It is not someone else's truth. It is not even what society expects or demands. People rarely fall into the 'normal' category.... [ Continued ]
