Clyde has another lesson today, this time to learn to make magic staffs.

(This is a thread from Mizahar's fantasy roleplay forums. Why don't you register today? This message is not shown when you are logged in. Come roleplay with us, it's fun!)

A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

7 Winter 511

Today Clyde was the most excited he had been in a long time. He had been wanting since he had learned of them to firsthand see a magic staff, dreamed of having one of his own... And now he was going to get to help make one!

It seemed a order had come in for several to be made, and so Lazarin had told Clyde he would assist Lazarin, so he could make them on his own later if another order came in...

With a huge grin on his face, Clyde got to the Institute early, quickly making his way to the magecrafting lab, with the large pedestals set off of the floor, to hold the item, and all of the paraphernalia to make things with magecrafting.

He had gotten there early, and so he took his time to look around... He quickly found the staff, a large one, about 5 feet in length, carved out of bone... As he tried to imagine what creature was large enough to carve a 5 foot staff out of it, the door opened, and in came Lazarin... Clyde let out a calming breath, trying to clear his face of emotion, readying himself for this lesson he was so excited about...

Lazarin came banging in, making a quick sweep of the room with his eyes. He looked over the staff for a few seconds, and then turned to Clyde. "What, you haven't started yet? Get the protective sigils up, to keep out foreign djed."

He walked past Clyde, without another glance, and made himself busy going through a cabinet, looking for something. Clyde grabbed a pot of inscribing paint, and a brush, and set to work on the glyphing around the magecrafting pedestal.

Clyde got started, making a series of sigils around the pedestal, making it form a circle around it. He took his time, interlacing words that worked better together, almost creating a story out of the glyphs, which were mostly words in the ancient tongue...

His sigils spoke of strength, of power and unity, using such words to tie the rest together, while the main bits were made up of phrases on stopping, blocking, and limiting djed from entering... All together they formed a strong barrier to keep out magic and djed, and would certainly more than do the job of keeping random unwanted djed from getting in and messing up the process. He knew that if wild djed did get in, it could corrupt the creation.

This was not as big of a problem at lower levels as they were doing, though it could mess with the enchantment. But when creating higher level creations this was vital, as any small unintended djed that got in would effect the item exponentially more as the enchantment deepened. And that was when magecrafting could go really wrong, and result in explosions and such, destroying the item... The magecrafter.... The lab... Or an entire building in the case of powerful items... That was after all how one of the most famous magecrafters Areesa Tallshade died. Best to err on the side of caution...

Finally Clyde finished working on it, and set aside his paint and brush, and looked back at Lazarin. He had set a large set of clamps on the pedestal, within which he had placed each end of the staff to be enchanted. Next to the pedestal, on a small table, he had also placed a jar of some odd powder, and a long coil of some wire Clyde had never seen before.

First Lazarin held up the wire. It looked more or less normal, but it did seem different somehow, though Clyde could not put his finger on it.

"This is Djed Wire, called D-Wire for short. It is specially treated with glyphing so as to allow djed and all types of magic to be able to cross it, and to be able to be carried along its length. It is used in making a magic staff. A magic staff, as you should know, more or less becomes a extension of a wizard, being able to carry and convey there djed and thus be used to do magic, and to help concentrate it."

"As you can see I have put this staff between these clamps. We will first coat the staff in this powder, as we have used before in making a magecrafting product. This becomes the conduit for the enchantment, and when it sinks into the staff, deepens its djed pathways as magecrafting does. The d-wire will be wrapped around the staff, from top to bottom. This allows the magic to better flow through the staff, and to allow you to send your djed from any one point to any other."

"As I said before, once this is done right, it will act as an extension of your body, and you will be able to exude res and other magics right from the staff as if it was your skin. We will cast magics into the staff, and it will go along its length through the wire, interacting with the powders beneath. As it does so, the powders will react, sinking into the staff, and enhancing it. The magic though will be contained by these clamps at either end, which will hold the magics we cast, and not let it escape as normally would be done when you cast magic into such a staff. Once all of the powder has sunk in, we are done, and only have to cool it off before finishing it. That is in this case. In other cases, you might first or later do other steps, as making something a magic staff alone counts as one."

"Now, I have told you how it is done, we will start, and do as I said."

With that Lazarin was done with explaining, and walked over to the staff, handing Clyde the jar of minerals to spread them.

Clyde happily took the jar, though tried to keep his face impassive. He did not want to show to much emotion, or to reveal how excited he was to be learning this... In fact this was the reason he had originally studied magecrafting... Because he found the idea of crafting a powerful magic staff with his own hands... To become famous for his ability to make them... To be able to create such great enchantments... It had not seemed possible to most... Which made him want to do it all the more...

But only in coming to Ravok... Had his dream become a real possibility... And he had been offered a chance to do what he had been told in Syliras was a silly dream...

Recalling this, his face grew more determined, as he totally focused on his task, wanting to prove himself as always to be a powerful mage... He gently opened the jar, and smeared some of it over the staff...

He carefully did so, making sure to cover every inch of it with the minerals, every bit of surface exposed, to make sure the enchantment would be over the entire staff... He turned to Lazarin, to make sure he was doing it right, but the man said nothing, and simply handed the wire to Clyde, to start wrapping it.

This bit was certainly not as interesting, and it took over an hour for Clyde to do so, making sure to wind the wire around it closely, and to not leave any gaps... He had lost count of the times he had wrapped around the staff... The times he had mislaid it, and had to unwind a bit and rewind it... But finally he was done, and he let out a deep breath...

Clyde nearly jumped, as he noticed Lazarin had come up right behind him. He had not even heard him approach, so concentrated on his work was he... Lazarin looked him in the eyes, that glare which made Clyde want to turn tail and run... By sheer force of will alone Clyde kept himself still, and did not dash out of the room...

"Now, we will each do a magic through the staff... A personal magic mind you... We pour our djed in, activating the mineral powder, and enacting the magecrafting process... I will do reimancy, you do another magic..."

Clyde did as he was told, and watched as Lazarin gripped his end of the staff with his hand. Clyde followed suit, and walked around to the other side, trying to decide which magic he would do...

To be honest, the only personal magic he was very good at was reimancy himself... The rest he had little skills in... So he finally just decided to go with auristics... He had a little bit of skill with it, and it might be interesting to see the aura of the staff change and grow as the process took hold...

Grasping his end, Clyde closed his eyes, and focused... He tried to pull within himself, to focus solely on the staff which he could feel within his grip... Though he was not to good at meditating... His mind kept slipping to what was going on... To the smell of the mineral powder on the air... To the low chanting Lazarin was doing, apparently as he poured his reimantic res into the staff...

But eventually he managed to focus, and felt a small bloom of power in his mind... Reaching into it, he scooped out a bit of djed... And sent a trickle of it down his arm... Into his hand... Out of his fingers, and into the staff... As the djed soaked into the staff, suddenly a picture of the staff sprang into his mind... He was seeing the staff through its aura... Without using his eyes... A common thing...

But as he continued to focus on the staff, as he continued the slow trickled of djed into the staff... He noticed something all at once...

He nearly pulled his hand from the staff, though did let out a audible gasp. He had been looking at the staff through its aura, when suddenly a small form had appeared sitting on it... A little gray form... Slightly rounded, with no sharp edges... It took him a moment to realize that it was vaguely humanoid, a tiny thing only 2 inches tall, with its body curled in the fetal position... And what a strange body... It was smooth and detail-less... He could not even tell if it was gendered... It did not move though, just sat there laying on the staff...

Clyde opened his eyes, and looked at the staff, having stopped his auristics... But as he did, the small form vanished from the staff... Clyde realized it was only visible in his aura vision... Though he had never heard of someone seeing such a thing... Though he had heard somewhere that everyone interpreted auras differently...

Recalling that he was supposed to be using auristics through the staff, Clyde once more tried to do the magic, but his mind kept slipping to that odd thing he had seen... What was it, why was it on the staff... And what the petch did it mean?

Trying to calm his racing mind, he focused once more on the staff, and the job at hand... Trying to sooth his mind and get into his meditative mindset... Though it took a lot longer this time...

After what seemed like bells to his distracted mind, but was surely only chimes, he was calmed down enough, and slipped back into his aura vision via another trickle of djed down his arm and into the staff...

Once more he immediately saw the staff via its aura, as he might have seen it with his eyes, if they were not once more closed... And then as the trickle of djed continued, he saw it once more, the greyish humanoid, curled up on top of the staff... Its eyes still closed...

But as he sort of blinked within his aura vision, it grew! Perhaps this was to signify the deepening of the djed of the object through the magecrafting process... He was not sure... But he did wonder how big it would be when it was done...

He was not sure, but now it seemed to be at least 3 inches tall, having grown an inch in that blink of time... And also... It seemed to have grown slightly darker... its body no longer true neutral gray, but slightly darker... And its skin seemed to have gotten thicker... Like there was a thin layer of something on it...

After several more chimes of using his auristics, and his professor using reimancy, the odd little humanoid figure seemed much more defined... In some ways...

What Clyde had thought was a extra layer of skin growing, had now formed into clothing, robes to be exact... Robes, which was obviously his minds way of signifying magic, as a person wearing robes was a generic sign normal people associated with a magic user. And this staff was for magic, it was a magic staff!

Along with that, the person/thing had grown to be 5 inches tall, and a odd color somewhere between grey and black...

And then startling him, the eyes suddenly burst open, to reveal what should be circular eyes, but what was swirling with wisps of reddish black, and bright silver... Was that signifying the people who had put there magic into it? Since his own res was bright silver, perhaps his professors was reddish black...

Just after the eyes burst open, Clydes did to, as he heard Lazarin speaking once more.

"Well, all of the mineral powders have been absorbed. Now you can take the wire off of the staff, it is only needed for this part of the process. Then you put it in the special water to cool down. You can do that stuff on your own."

Having said that, Lazarin abruptly walked off, taking out a blank book, and beginning to record something in it. Though Clyde had no idea what.

But he ignored this, and moved on, going to the staff and carefully unwinding the long length of wire which was wrapped around it. This however required him to put on some thick gloves, as it seemed that in the process of magic going through them, they got heated up, and were very hot. And the fact that he was wearing these thick gloves slowed him down even more, making it take even longer to get the wire off of the staff.

But eventually he did, and had the length of wire laying unwound before him, and the shiny bare surface of the staff before him, which had last he saw it been covered in mineral powder...

Then all there was to it was to undo each end of the clamps, and take out the staff. holding it for a moment, he looked it over. It looked more or less how it did when they started, but this close, he could feel the energy bubbling inside from there magecrafting enchantments...

But now they were done, so he walked over to the tub full of charged water, and dropped in the staff. As he did, the surface began to bubble and froth, as if something hot had been dropped in. This died down after chime or so, and came to a slow bubble, as the water cooled the staff.

Now they were done, all that was left really was to wait for the object to finish cooling, and then take it out. And since Lazarin was busy with writing in his book, and Clyde had nothing else to do... He called it quits, and headed out for the day... He would pop in tommorrow to check on it, and take it out of the tub, and to put it were it went. But for now, he was done, and ready to fill his rumbling belly, and get some sleep... They had been at it for bells, and most of the day was already spent... He had not realized they had spent the whole day until now, when his concentration was off of his work... Time to rest.

Thread Complete!

Notes: Please put a notation in your threads about using major NPCs like Lazarin, so I know for sure that you have permission. If you ask permission from Verilian and then put the thread in my office, how am I supposed to know you asked him? xD Save me a little footwork and just let me know you asked, okay? Thanks!

I would have liked to see some more detail about the "special water" used to cool the staff. How is it special? What is it charged with? If this is part of magecrafting a staff, it's a very important thing to explain!

If you have any questions or comments on this grade, please send a PM!
