Good ______, Alyra!

I had to do a little digging myself to find the answer to this one. However, rather than misquote or paraphrase a very in-depth explanation and perhaps leave a portion out I will simply direct you to the Grading Guide.

The topic you are inquiring after is covered quite thoroughly and is deserving of the read. Hope this helps!

I don't mind tackling this question. Sorry but I was gone all day yesterday.

If a PC sees someone go through the process of building a fire (from finding the right amount/type of wood, to building it, to lighting it), would they only earn lores for building fire or could that PC possible earn some wilderness survival skill points? Is XP only awardable when the PC does the action?

I'm going to set aside the level of the student verses the level of the teacher for a moment and address that later but keep in mind for now that this is important.

Skills can be awarded if students observe as well in almost every category except some weapons. Think about how you learn. If you watch someone do something first, it is often far easier to learn or you understand how to do so immediately after watching depending on what the lesson is on. Then you can award lores confidently. But when it comes to XP it has to do with how the write of the observing character treats it.

"John watched Jane build a fire." Hell no I'm not awarding XP. But... if this was what happened instead. "John carefully noted how Jane built the fire, absorbing the steps, clearly making a mental checklist of what to do first, how the wood was initially stacked, how tinder was handled, ......." (you get the idea) then I would indeed award XP. Even though the PC isn't actually doing the skill, the PC is LEARNING the skill... understand the difference? In the first case they might as well have been a discarded turd on the ground. In the second case they were actively engaged.

This goes for a lot of skills... I know my PC had to do a ton of reading about beekeeping before she could do hands on stuff with beekeeping because she needed to know what she was doing/looking for/aiming for BEFORE she got into the processes. That counted for XP because of the same reason or example I outlined above.

If so, if one PC is teaching another how to do something, does the student only earn skill points if they practice that in that thread? The same question goes for reading and gaining XP through that.

No. See the above answer. It depends on how the student reacts, their writing, etc. This is where your brain as a grader has to engage and know what to look for. But at the same time don't forget to award XP (usually in Teaching) to the teacher. If John as a PC is just sitting there like a turd not reacting to Jane's teaching (as an example) don't give him XP. Award him if hes trying... even if he gets confused and wonders what if or what next etc.

Does this go for all skills? A PC can only earn XP in writing if they actually write, yes. However, can a PC earn medicine XP if they are shown how to amputate a limb, but don't do actually remove someone's limb? Does that just stay as a "How to amputate a limb" lore until they actually remove someone's limb?

You can actually earn XP in Writing if you study writing and don't write. For example.. if a PC reads about how to dissect a sentence and what sentence structures are... BOOM... writing XP. You need to learn about how to write an outline and what constitutes parts of an OUTLINE before you write one right? So your writing example isn't a good one.

So in your medical example.... anyone and their dog can amputate a limb. All you need is a saw or an axe or a sharp knife right? But that doesn't merit MEDICINE XP like you are asking about. What your implying is that a doctor needs to know how to amputate a limb with the least amount of damage to the patient, preventing infection, and death due to blood loss. So now you are talking tourniquet use, perhaps cauterizing wounds, and when too amputate. That's how you get into the realm of Medicine XP. But if you just hacked off someone's limb, there's no way to know that info unless you have hacked off a hundred and based on how you treated before/after some lived some didn't.... or unless you had medical knowledge (Someone teaching you, you read it etc) to help the issue out. So you'd award XP in medicine IF the person was doing it in a way that prevented death/bloodloss/etc... training on how to do it... Remember half of medical school for real world doctors is classroom work... and THEN you need to take level into consideration.

I'm not sure Amputation is mentioned on levels in Medicine, but obviously you aren't going to award a MASTER at Medicine amputation XP for learning this basic thing right? You have to use your head and award based on level. Novices can all learn things and gain XP at skills from READING about them. It says that right in the players guide. BUT... once you get more skilled... competent and above, level comes into play and its hard to do so. So that's where each case is individual.

Also, one last thing to note. If a teacher has a high level of teaching, they are going to impart knowledge on their students easier. So say a teacher is a MASTER at teaching. Remember, the pc can then earn 6XP a thread, not just five, to reflect how well the teacher is skilled at teaching. I'm fairly sure if a MASTER at teaching (who has wilderness survival skills above the student) teaches a NOVICE how to build a fire, the novice is going to have no issues building the fire. THEY WILL LEARN TO DO SO BY WATCHING.

So keep these three things in mind and you'll know if you should award or not.

1. What's the PC's level?
2. How are they reacting to the reading/lecture/teaching?
3. What's the actual situation/goal/etc?

If all of these are great, award XP. If something's a dud... don't.

I really hope this helps.

Thank you to those who have helped out in Sunberth but it still remains determined to be #1 in the Highest Pending category! If you have the time I know Twister would appreciate some help.

What's this? Taldera has overtaken Falyndar as #1 in least amount of total grades pending! Sound the alarms! Battle stations! Beware before the great goddess Myri sends the Myrian legions down upon their heads! They may want to pack some leg warmers though...

Whew! It's been a few days since an update. I apologize for that. As we can see there has been a huge increase in the amount of grades pending throughout each domain. Not unexpected given that the season was drawing to a close.

On another note, it's season change! Graders should be aware of stipulations in grading pertaining to character sheet maintenance. That criteria can be found here. If you've got comments, questions, or concerns please don't hesitate to direct them here if you're a Grader!
