The Mage meets the Wolf

The wolf wondered why the girl had leaned forward to speak to him in that slow and deliberate tone. He could hear her just fine from where she had been before and the way she had been talking. Finding it amusing that she thought that he would need to be spoken to in such a manner he nodded his head in confirmation to her first question. Yes, he could understand her perfectly well or they wouldn't be sitting here looking at each other for so long. If he had been a wild wolf he would either have attacked her or just passed on by without bothering to scope her out. It would have depended on how hungry he was of course.

Watching her seem to perk up at something she had thought of he nodded again to confirm her second question. He was now watching her with a mix of suspicion and curiosity. Well aware of how many Kelvics were slaves he knew to never trust anyone; he couldn't even trust his own parents most of the time. He rarely got to speak with other people and was often hidden away; his parents were ashamed to have birthed a Kelvic child. He had overheard them speaking of selling him into slavery several times, but his father's logic of letting him wander off on his own had always prevailed.

His father knew what his mother didn't, that it was in his nature to roam. He was still too young to leave home just yet, but he was planning on it soon. Whenever the need to roam became too great he came out here to satisfy it. He had never expected to meet someone interesting while on his hunts, but there was something intriguing about this girl that kept him rooted to his spot in the clearing. If she made any sort of suspicious move now that he had revealed his true nature he would take off into the trees as swiftly as he could and disappear just as fast as he had appeared.

His left ear turned to the side as a sound caught his attention. A soft rustling of underbrush indicated that a prey animal was just at the edge of the trees. He listened to it for a few moments before abruptly launching out of his prone position and diving into the treeline. A squeal of pain came from the groundhog he had managed to catch in the process of trying to dig a new hole. Crunching down on it he made sure it was dead before trotting back to the spot he had been lying in previously. Flopping back down on the grass he held his kill with his paws and began eating it. It never occurred to him that the girl might consider such a display disgusting. After all it was just nature for a wolf to eat this way. Glancing at her from the corner of his eyes he waited for her to say something else or do something that indicated she no longer wanted to sit in the clearing with him. He wouldn't blame her a bit for that if she did get up and leave; it was strange to be in the presence of an eating wolf after all.

As Kamilla watched the dark wolf nod, answering her question of whether it could understand her, she felt her unease lessen slightly, the knowledge that she could communicate with the creature creating a false perception of safety. When she asked her second question and was met with the same response, she grew even more comfortable with the situation even though the wolf being a kelvic didn't make it any less dangerous to her. She responded to the kelvic's second nod with a small smile as she relaxed her sitting position, switching from leaning forward curiously to leaning back casually.

As the two of them sat there in the clearing, quietly observing each other as Kamilla tried to imagine what the wolf looked like in human form, or what the transformation looked like, or why it had chosen to 'introduce' itself to her, all these questions and many more crossed the young mage's mind, but they were all momentarily discarded as a new observation was made. With the tension that had been between them prior to discovering that the wolf was a kelvic, Kamilla hadn't had time to fully appreciate how beautiful the creature before her was.

With her caution now greatly diminished, she took advantage of the mutual silence to take in as much of the creature's appearance as possible. She was amazed by the way the wolf's sky blue eyes contrasted it's unusually dark fur, creating an almost magical allure. The more she looked at the wolf kelvic, the more inspiration she felt, though she wasn't quite sure what she would channel it into yet. It was then that it occurred to her to preserve the image of creature for the day when she had use for it.

Perking up at the newly concocted idea, Kamilla's lips parted to ask the kelvic if she could attempt to sketch it, but before a single word could leave her mouth, something unheard by her seemed to catch the kelvic's attention. Quickly, she turned her head in the direction the wolf was looking though there was nothing to see, "What is it?" she asked, her voice filled with a combination of curiosity and nerves, but rather than giving her an answer the wolf darted off into the bushes instead.

Not sure whether her kelvic companion was running after something or running away, Kamilla quickly got to her feet and cautiously hurried over to her nearby backpack, slinging it over her shoulder with the intention of getting out of the wilderness as soon as possible. Her swift exit was abandoned only a tick after it had begun as a loud squeal came from the area where the wolf kelvic had just disappeared and a moment later the kelvic came back into sight, skipping proudly back into the clearing with a dead groundhog hanging from it's jaw.

The sight of the creature's limp lifeless body sent a shiver down her spine as she was reminded of the danger the dark wolf posed, regardless of whether it was kelvic or not. She watched as the it casually returned to it's previous position in the clearing and began to eat the dead hog right in front of her, as if it were the most normal thing ever(though she supposed it was to the wolf). At this point the shiver that had run down her spine had chosen to settle in her stomach with a very unsettling result as she felt it's contents begin to churn.

Deciding she'd had enough of the gore, Kamilla was ready to leave the clearing, for the day at least, offering an explanation to the feasting wolf before she did. "Well, you're clearly busy... " she started, the unease evident in her voice and expression, "If you don't mind I'd like to try and sketch you...I'll be here tomorrow." she finished before her tolerance of the bloody scene had run out and she turned to leave, offering a final "Bye." as she did.

Faolan found her reaction to his meal amusing, but he didn't understand how anyone could find eating in this way disgusting. To him it was completely normal and eating in any other manner was not something he willingly chose to do. Of course his mother had forced to eat like a regular person his entire life; causing him to develop a bit of resentment towards cooked food. When she spoke to him again he stopped eating to look up at her. He gave her a nod of understanding before returning to his meal. After she left he finished up and carried the remnants of the carcass off into the trees to dump it in a place where nature would take care of the rest of its disposal.

Trotting back along his own scent trail he made his way back to where his clothes were. He paused along his journey at a water source to clean the blood off his face and paws. Arriving back at his hiding spot he changed back into his human form and pulled on his clothing. Heading back into town he wondered at the girl he had met and wondered what tomorrow would bring.

19 Fall

Faolan got up the next morning to venture back out to the clearing where he had met the mysterious girl yesterday. Deciding that he would show up in his human form today he made his way through the trees and underbrush easily enough with his boots instead of his paws. When he arrived he moved over to where they had been sitting the previous day and sat down on the grass. Closing his eyes and turning his face towards the sun he enjoyed its companionable warmth while he waited. His nostrils flared regularly to take in the scents of his surroundings and he just relaxed while he waited for her to return as she said she would.

He had made sure to eat before he left his parents' house so as not to freak her out again. If he became hungry he would just eat out in the trees, after all he wanted to learn more about this magic user, and maybe make a friend in the process. He didn't really have any friends, there were people who were kind to him, but it was difficult to find people who could understand him as he was instead of trying to force him to be more human. Like it or not he was not human, and being forced to ignore his animal nature was a painful thing for him. He enjoyed being able to stray into the woods whenever he wanted to in order to relax and be more at home, it was the only way to cope with his situation. Letting out a soft sigh he opened his eyes to examine the trees around him, listening to the quiet noises of nature which so sharply contrasted the racket of the city.

He knew when she was approaching the clearing. He could smell and hear her before she ever would have entered his line of sight. Nevertheless he grew slightly nervous, social interaction wasn't exactly something he was all that good at. Looking back over his shoulder at the entrance between the two pillars he waited for her to appear.

The next morning Kamilla woke and went through her usual grooming process and within a bell she'd had breakfast, gotten dressed and was ready to leave for the clearing. She made sure to pack her filled waterskin, grimoire/journal and stationery, everything she'd need IF her kelvic friend decided to show up. With that she made her way out of the city and towards the earthy clearing, denying her excitement of the chance to see the beautiful and very intriguing dark wolf again.

Since moving to Zeltiva she hadn't met many people and had made even less acquaintances, preferring to keep to herself for the most part, but now with the chance of making an interesting friend she found herself rather enthusiastic and hopeful. "I hope to gods the wolf show's up." she said to herself as she turned off the main road and into the wilderness, led by her small stone obelisks. Kamilla still didn't know the creature's gender or really anything other than it was a beautiful black kelvic wolf, but even those few details had been enough to catch and hold her attention.

When she entered the clearing, her focus was on the ground and not falling over, it wasn't till she'd taken a few steps in before she stopped to look up and was greeted with the sight of a lone man sitting there, causing her to immediately take a cautious step back, but it was too late, he already knew she was there. As she stood there silently staring back at the man, his identity was given away by the two sky-blue orbs that stared back at her, the exact color of the dark wolf's. It was only then that Kamilla's mind caught up to the situation and she realized that the man WAS the wolf. kelvic remember!

A small yet friendly smile crossed her face as she took a few steps in the man's direction, "Hey, I wasn't expecting to see a person today... I'm Kamilla." she said cheerfully as she extended her hand. It was only now that she noticed the kelvic's human appearance. He looked like he was in his teens, a young man and besides those hauntingly blue eyes she noticed that his hair was the same dark color as the wolf's coat, obviously kelvics had some common traits in both forms. Other than that, there wasn't much else to the young man's appearance, except that he was actually quite handsome and somehow retained some of the feral look of his wolf form, though that could easily have just been her brain reminding her of the bloody meal he'd had the day before.

Faolan watched her carefully as she entered the clearing, noting her step backwards before she realized who he was. When she smiled at him he offered her a nervous one in return. He wasn't really sure how this would turn out, but he was curious what it would be like to have a friend so he had decided that he needed to give this a chance. When she was close enough he stood up to shake her hand in greeting. "Hi, I know, I just wanted to be able to talk this time." he explained faintly. "I'm Faolan." he murmured.

After a moment of silence he sat back down where he had been and ran a hand back through his dark hair. He glanced over at her and fidgeted a little bit. "You said something about wanting to sketch?" he asked softly. "You're an artist as well as a magic user then?" he inquired. He was curious about both of these things. He was in no way artistic, and had no ability to wield magic either, but he was curious as to Kamilla's abilities with both of them.

As he waited and listened to her responses his eyes studied the trees surrounding the clearing carefully. He wasn't searching for anything in particular, just looking to see if there was anything interesting happening in their immediate surroundings. Not finding anything except a few birds flitting among the branches his gaze flickered back to her before dropping to his dirty boots. They had been many miles together in these woods and he knew that soon he would outgrow them and need another pair. Perhaps he could get a pair before he left. He already had plans for leaving when the new year rolled around; only then could he convince his parents to allow him to leave. After all in their eyes he should still be a toddler. Unfortunately for them he aged much quicker than a human child and was already a teenager.

Pushing those thoughts from his mind he focused on Kamilla. After all she was the reason he had venture out here again for a second day in a row. Usually he didn't do that, but he wanted to make a friend, or at least get to know her a little bit better so as to sate his curiosity. His curious gaze found his way back to her face and he offered her another faint smile.

As the young kelvic took the hand she'd extended and introduced himself, Kamilla responded with another small yet friendly smile. She let out a small laugh at his explanation, "Well, it's nice to meet you Faolan." she said, followed by a short silence in which all that could be heard were birds in the distance and the rustling of leaves in the breeze. When the kelvic boy, Faolan, decided to sit back down, Kamilla made sure to do the same, leaving about two feet between the two of them as sat, folding her legs beneath her.

Another small smile crept onto her face at his question, an artist? Not likely, but she found the thought of it quite entertaining. She took a moment to pull her long wavy hair over her left shoulder before replying to his questions with a sweet laugh, "Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near to being an artist. I'm actually a dressmaker, so drawing is just something I do in order to plan my designs." she paused for a moment to take a short breath before continuing, "But, I suppose the drawing also comes in handy with my magic now and then." she left it at that, there was no need to go on and explain that she was also an animator, she'd only just met him in 'person' after all.

Kamilla noticed that Faolan seemed more shy than anything else, though he was clearly trying to seem friendly, she figured that if she could get him talking he'd ease up a bit. "So what about you? Any hobbies?...I mean other than stalking young women in the forest?" she made sure to emphasize the playful, teasing tone in her voice as she spoke so that he'd know she was only joking. "You're wolf form is quite mesmerizing, which is why I'd like to attempt to capture it for inspiration." the key word being 'attempt' since her drawing skills were quite lacking, though she figured she could manage a rough sketch at the least.

"Nice to meet you too." Faolan had responded politely. "A dressmaker?" he inquired. "That sounds like an artistic job." he said in a slightly amused tone. "How does it come in handy with your magic?" he asked. He was clearly curious and it was worming its way through his shyness slowly. His curiosity had gotten him in trouble numerous times, but in this situation he would either discover that this girl didn't want to be his friend or he would end up with a friendship.

When she started asking him about himself he smiled a little bit. When she joked at him about approaching young men in the forest he laughed slightly. "Hobbies? Well, I don't generally approach people in the forest. I prefer to hunt or explore. Otherwise I don't really have any hobbies." he explained. When she said that his wolf form was mesmerizing his cheeks turned a slight red color. He wasn't used to being complimented, especially about his wolf form, so it was a little embarrassing for him. "Thank you." he murmured in response after a moment of trying to figure out how to respond.

"I can shift if you'd like." he offered. He was still a little nervous in her presence, but he remembered their interaction from the day before and thought that maybe once he was in his wolf form he would feel a little more comfortable. It had to do with having all of his senses at their peak and being much quicker on four legs which would enable him to disappear into the woods quicker if things turned out for the worst in the end. He also would be more comfortable in that form, and being able to just lounge in the grass while she drew was appealing to him. A day to just relax in the quiet company of another living being would be a nice change of pace.

So far so good, neither one had offended the other in any way yet, nor had she detected any hints of hostility, though the day had only just begun. When the young kelvic told her that dressmaking sounded like art to him, she had to think about it for a moment before cracking another bright smile, "Ha, I've never thought about it like that before. I guess you're right." she paused for a moment afterward as she considered her newly obtained title of artist. if she thought about it, Faolan was completely accurate, dressmaking did require some creativity, which was the single most defining trait of art after all.

Kamilla allowed her gaze to trail for a moment, gliding over the surrounding trees and the few clouds that floated in the distance, it really was a beautiful day to be out in nature. Faolan's next question caught her by surprise, though she realised it was a natural response to her statement and any initial suspicion was cast aside by the curiosity that permeated his shy demeanour. Her eyes dropped to his boots for a moment as she thought on her answer, worn old things that looked as if they'd seen more use than they would have liked, well he had said that he spent most of his days in the wilderness so she supposed it was to be expected. "Well, it helps when planning designs for animation..." she paused for a moment wondering whether she should elaborate or not but quickly decided that she might as well. Besides, if she didn't he would likely just ask her to anyway.

A deep breath was inhaled in preparation for her description of animation, Faolan seemed innocent enough when it came to magic and she understood what it felt like to be filled with curiosity about the fantastic art. " Animation is a form of world magic that involves giving living aspects to inanimate objects. I know it sounds a bit creepy but most animators use it to create helpful and entertaining objects like children's toys that can move around on their own or keyless locks that recognise their owners." she finished with a large huff, slightly surprised at just how easy it was to share things with her kelvic acquaintance. She figured her sudden eagerness to tell him about magic could be attributed to the complete lack of anyone to discuss magic with...since the passing of her grandmother.

When she complimented his wolf form she could see the awkwardness with which he accepted it, adorable, a small smile crossing her face. Suddenly reminded of her original reason for coming to the clearing, Kamilla was filled with excitement at the chance of seeing his beautiful animal form again. "Uhm, sure. A warning though... I'm not great at drawing, so don't expect anything amazing." her last few words carried a hint of embarrassment, but nothing worth noting. Slowly she found herself a nice comfortable spot against a tree at the end of the clearing, settling on the soft grass and reaching into her bag to retrieve what she'd need for the sketch.

Faolan listened to her responses to what he had said quietly. His eyes moved from her to the surrounding trees as she spoke and then back again. He was particularly curious about the magic of animation and she held his full attention as she told him that it was used to bring toys to life and create fancy locks. He stood up as she moved to find a more comfortable spot and began undressing. Out of habit he folded the clothes and set them in a pile. He didn't seem to care that he was bare naked right in front of Kamilla. Truthfully it didn't bother him, and from the handful of Kelvics that he knew neither did they.

In a flash of light the naked body of the young man was gone and replaced with the form of his wolf. Shaking out the dark fur he stretched with a yawn and wiggled the pads on his toes against the dirt and grass. His head tilted back a little bit and his eyes closed as his nose twitched while he inhaled the scents that permeated the air around them. He could smell the other animals that had passed through the clearing since their encounter yesterday. The faint scent of his rabbit still lingered as well.

After standing that way for a moment he sat down and turned his head to look at her. His ears swiveled a little bit as different sounds caught his attention while his blue eyes studied her quietly. He didn't know what he should do. Should he just sit here and look off into the woods? Should he look at her? Looking to her for instruction he fidgeted slightly where he sat.

Kamilla found her journal with minimal effort considering the bag was almost empty, only containing the precious book, which also held a few loose pages, some utensils and a small neatly packed lunch. With the book in hand, she made sure she was seated comfortably before flipping the book open in search of an appropriate place for the drawing. Her eyes froze for a moment on the notes she'd made the previous day, she'd scribbled them down the moment she arrived home from the clearing, a simple rough drawing of the earth chakram with minor notes about the spin and thin edges, she needed to find a way to increase its spin in order to improve results.

Remembering that she had been busy with something else, Kamilla's head rose from behind the book only to see Faolan's naked form and quickly return to its hiding spot behind the book again, peering over it curiously every few ticks. The young sorceress had been so absorbed in her notes that she hadn't even noticed the kelvic get undressed, and now that she had, she couldn't avert her gaze for very long. It wasn't that she was some sort of pervert or that Faolan's body was irresistible to her, she had just realised that he was about to turn and was curious as to what the transformation looked like, imagining some grotesque man-beast middle stage. She watched the naked young man, not daring to blink yet still hiding behind the open book and then, in a simple flash of light, he was gone and in his place stood(on all fours) the majestic black wolf that she'd met the day before.

An icy drop of fear travelled down her spine at the sight of the predator, her body tensing for a moment, she couldn't help it, it was instinct to be cautious around anything with teeth bigger than her own, even though she told herself it was just the young naked boy. Once she'd finally convinced herself to relax, she pulled a loose page from between the secured one's and awaited the dark wolf's pose.

After a view brief moments of silence it became obvious that the kelvic wolf was unsure of what to do, his body language was so obvious that Kamilla could understand it even though his body was entirely different to her own. She thought for a short moment before speaking out, "Just make yourself comfortable in whatever position you want." she said, trying to encourage him to relax. The sight of his wolf form had yet again filled her with inspiration and awe, his wolf form was truly a sight to behold, she could only imagine what his dark fur coat must look like at night when bathed in the light of the moon.

Once Faolan had found a comfortable position to sit/lay in, she would get right to work, offering a friendly smile every chime or so. She was aware that her drawing skills weren't amazing, but she would do her best. Starting with a simple rough light sketch, nothing more than faint outlines of his shape and most prominent features. Her eyes darted between her drawing and her new kelvic friend as she tried to capture as much detail as possible.
