Clouds Are Stalking Islands In The Sun (Titus)

Timestamp Early Fall 516 AV

The man was stripped down to just cut off trousers and was busy bent over a long section of glued together wood that had first been dovetailed in order to interlock and make the glue stronger. He'd rounded off the end and then curved the wood slightly so that it had a bow to it. The other end came to a conclusion in a sharp point. All of it was rough cut, which the man was trying to change by carefully running a hand planer across the wood, shaving off section by section until the shape grew more distinct. It was a length of wood about seven feet long and three feet wide. The shape was almost like a flattened boat hull.

The man had definitely worked up a sweat. His long brownish black hair was tangled and damp, either indicating that he'd had a recent swim or the heat had soaked his hair with sweat. He was tanned dark and looked to be in his early thirties. There were scars on his back and arms, some looking like they'd been made through hard work and hard living. He was corded with muscle and barefooted.

Regardless of his dress, there was still an air about him that spoke of leadership and of being in charge. He was one of the few people that was on the beach of Syka's settlement. And he absolutely didn't look to busy to be approached. His primitive workstation was made of up a rough set of saw horses made from chopped down palm trees, an impromptu shelter from the sun that looked like a giant umbrella made of palm leaves, and a bundle of fruit laid in the shade as if ready to be snacked upon at any moment.

His toolbox was nearby and contained more tools than most standard carpenters. It was oversized and heavy. There was also what looked to be a block of wax sitting in the shade as well. Curls of wood lay scattered around on the sand.

His friendly expression looked absolutely approachable as he worked.

Clouds Are Stalking Islands In The Sun (Titus)

NoteThis turned out to be a really long post so I wanted to break it up. If that's not cool, let me know and I'll piece it back together.

Titus walked out of the cabin onto the deck of The Maelstrom. In his raggedy pants, bare feet and shirtless, the tanned and tattooed Svefra reached his arms up as high as he could making sure to feel the pull and tug of stiff muscles from his shoulders and down his back as well as his limbs. The sailor had grown up sleeping in a hammock but being as tall as he was, the young man with dirty blonde hair did have the occasional rough night in the sack. Last night was such a case. The man interlocked his fingers above his head and lowered them with locked elbows out in front to eye level then turned his palms outward. The flip created pressure and cracked all eight knuckles in a quick roll. It also sent a wave of tension up his forearms and along his biceps and triceps. Bleary blue eyes blinked at the aqua blue water of the Suvan. Its beauty nearly brought a tear to his eye but Titus wasn’t thinking too deeply about his memories though he had been playing his ukulele more since they’d left the outer ocean.

Titus bent at his waist; knees locked out and allowed his upper body to dangle down towards the deck. The muscles running from his bottom towards his knees drew tight with the stretch. The young man drove his shoulders closer to his legs in an attempt to fold himself in half. His hands made contact with the wood and then in a final push, he flattened his palms against the worn and weathered surface. He held the pose for a count of ten before he walked forward with his hands. Titus kept his legs straight and matched the rigidity with his arms and shoulders. His shoulders burned a bit but the stretched muscles along his tanned form felt good to be challenged. The man formed two legs of a triangle with his body. When he had achieved an equal balance of weight on both his upper and lower half, there was a peace of mind that filled him. Titus closed his eyes and made a series of deep breaths simply allowing his head to hang in his present position. This newfound freedom gave the sailor the perfect frame of mind to communicate with his lord.

Father Laviku, you call me son and have marked me as your own. Allow me the presence to serve you. You are strength so I am strong. Your promises are true so I am faithful. You are generous so I am free. Thank you, Father. Thank you for everything.

After a few chimes of rest and prayer, Titus felt his ship pitch to the starboard side but it wasn’t the smooth shift of a wave. This particular movement was the result of some kind of impact, albeit small. Titus walked his hands out farther and used his abdominal muscles to allow his torso to settle closer to the deck in a controlled manner. The man elongated himself into a horizontal position where his back and legs were straight but his arms were locked out in a vertical stance. Titus lifted his head, tufts of hair falling into his face. He nearly went cross-eyed to stare at the wayward locks. He pursed his lips, puffed up his cheeks and blew at the sun-kissed tips three times to no avail. His shoulders began to burn once more so he decided to forgo the hair and continue with his little workout.

Titus released his elbows and used the muscles in his arms to slowly lower his chest to the deck. The instant he felt the coolness of the wood, he pushed his body back up at the same speed until his elbows were ready to lock out once more. The sailor did not let them do so but rather used this as a pivot point to reverse the motion and lower himself back down. Again, the kiss of the aged timbers signaled his arms to flex and drive his body upward. His arms began to ache from the strain as did his abs and back which also received stress from the constant effort required to keep his back and legs straight. The Svefra repeated the up and down motion eleven times then felt his strength wane. He brought his knees beneath his waist and leaned back until he was sitting on his feet. His hands, slightly sore and tingling from the exertion brushed the hair back from his face just in time to feel that soft bump come around again.

The whalekin smiled. His tavan was the guilty culprit, Titus was almost certain but to be absolutely sure he got up and walked to the port gunwhale. He crossed his forearms on the edge and leaned upon them so that his eyes could scan the water. Within chimes, a long slender shadow passed beneath the boat but not before giving the Casinor a little bump. The black diamonds on the tips of a dorsal fin and tail were a dead ringer for Ushaka. Titus laughed and called out in Fratava. “Oy, ya cleanin’ the barnacles off the ole girl?” He laughed again and made several long strides to a stow near the cabin. He retrieved his harpoon and slipped the rope over his head and shoulder allowing it to settle across his back while the sling nestled in the line formed along the center of his chest. Titus walked to the gunwhale and climbed up on it twisting his feet so that his toes pointed outward. Slowly he stood to his full height while the cerulean orbs scanned the water until they found the shark some twenty yards off his hull.

The Svefra bent his knees slightly then sprang himself into the air. His hands lead his arms up and together above his head while his abs constricted. This pulled his upper body down in a curve towards the surface of the cover. Clasped hands pierced the tension, arms opened it up and with his head tucked in between, the sailor slipped below the surface without much ado until his long legs floundered a bit and the tops of his feet smacked rather rudely. Titus heard it even below the water not to mention the instant sting that he felt. He kicked his legs regardless and drove himself down and into the water.

It was warm, clear and perfect for a man of the waves like Titus. As he felt his air running out, the lad used his arms to split the water and then peel it away to respective sides. His hands met at his chest then fold as if praying. He shoved them forward ahead of his body and at the extent of his reach, his arms would pull backwards with elbows locked and hands twisted into cups. In essence, he was used his upper limbs as oars while he kicked his legs like a frog. This was not a fast means of swimming but it was easy on the body and allowed Titus to take in his surroundings. That was an important aspect, especially when a hundred pound shark was barreling towards you.

Clouds Are Stalking Islands In The Sun (Titus)

Titus surfaced and began to tread water. In a quick move, he slicked his hair back over his head with both hands then went back to keeping himself afloat. The fisherman turned himself in the water to allow the shark to swim past. Ushaka rolled onto his side and exposed his soft underbelly to his companion. Titus used his fingertips to stroke the smooth texture of the shark when a splash drew his attention. The predator must’ve sensed the disturbance as well for he righted himself, went up towards the ship and then curled back around. Titus watched and when the shark came zipping by he took a deep breath and grasped the dorsal fin with both hands then went along for the ride.

Titus loved to swim with Ushaka. The shark was longer than the man but not nearly as dense but it didn’t seem to matter. While Titus was shown how to swim, tread water and the like; the shark was built to be a speed demon. The Svefra scouted ahead though he was not practiced enough to identify species, he could make out shapes. A large fish was chasing a group of smaller fish. Titus remembered fish that were built like that from when he was a kid but the name escaped him. None of them were as large as Ushaka, however and the shark remained undaunted in his pursuit but Titus had other plans.

The human flexed his biceps which allowed him to pull his body up against the large, hungry fish. In a jerk, the fisherman half extended his arms then yanked back against the dorsal fin which sent Ushaka off course to starboard. Titus instantly released his hold and simply let the density of the water stop and hold him. In slow motions, sometimes a circle or a gentle kick; the Svefra used each of his four limbs to maintain his position just beneath the surface. He watched as the black-tipped reef shark swam in an arc out then began to circle back towards the fleeing smaller fish and the larger game fish that was still in pursuit.

Titus continued his holding pattern of the occasional kick, swipe, swat or any other motion that he deemed necessary to remain just below the surface. Within a chime, the smaller fish scattered and headed in all directions except the way they had been heading. Titus removed his harpoon, uncoiled the rope then looped it around his right wrist. He took the shaft into his hands, ready to throw. The bigger fish made a move to snatch one in his squared jaw then immediately turned tail and fled back towards the waiting fisherman. Through the haze created by Syna’s light piercing the surface of the Suvan, Titus could see a large shadow swimming swiftly after the larger fish which steadily made his way along the channel. When it was about ten feet away, Titus exhaled the breath he had been holding releasing a cadre of bubbles. The already frightened fish; silver and built like a ship, twisted and headed up and to Titus’ right. The fisherman popped up as high as he could with a massive set of kicks. As he rose into the air, he drew back the harpoon, eyes trained on the silver body already starting to dive back down. The fisherman hurled the weapon with all of his might the instant he felt gravity take hold of him.

The shot rang true and pierced some part of the fish’s meat. Titus splashed back down and saw blood in the water so he reached for the rope with his left hand while taking hold of the slack in his right. There was a sharp jerk on the line and for a tick, the Svefra thought he had won but then the line went slack. He pulled at the rope until he was holding his harpoon and staring at the blood as it washed off the tip. Titus turned to swim back to his ship when he noticed people on the beach. One had a little work station set up. The Svefra bobbed for a moment. He knew that Ushaka would chase down the wounded fish, kill it and eat it. Titus was hungry but he also had wanted to meet some of the residents that he had been catching glimpses of off and on since he arrived in late summer.

The decision had been made. The failed fisherman coiled the rope around the harpoon as it was before creating a sling of the rope then slipped himself into it. He rode the waves while alternating his arms in big arching scoops while kicking his legs in a full body effort that propelled him forward at a decent rate of speed. The tide had rolled out long ago so the stillness in the sheltered corner made his task easier though it was not entirely easy. Every second stroke of his right arm, Titus lifted his head to the left to exhale and take another breath. This familiar exercise was good for his soul and his body but the overall distance from his ship to the shore was several hundred yards. The exertion he put his muscles through made his arms ache, his legs wanted to cramp and his lungs burned. By the time Titus got to where he could put his feet down, which was still fifty or sixty yards out, he took advantage of the ability to rest and lingered for several moments while he regained a somewhat normal breathing pattern.

Once he felt able to speak, Titus called out in Fratava first at the man under the small canopy. The fellow was muscled and tanned like a Svefra so it was worth a shot. “Oy! What ya got goin’ on there?” The young man waited for a response but he began to half walk, half swim and half drift further into shore. Once he go to where the water was less than waist high, he just rose up and allowed the sea to fall from his body. Titus walked with no fear or hesitation towards the man and his little shop. The blue eyes scanned the fruit and the tools but were drawn to the creation upon the sawhorses almost immediately and everything else became a blur. “What’s that?”

FishI was using a Giant Trevally or Giant Kingfish as the bigger fish and yellowfin goatfish as the smaller ones. Not sure if it's of any imprtance but I wanted to share it anyway.

Clouds Are Stalking Islands In The Sun (Titus)

Postby Gossamer on September 16th, 2016, 3:57 pm

The fishing around Syka was forgiving to say the least. The teaming schools of fish that filled the shoals and reefs weren’t used to human predators. If anything, Ushaka the black tipped reef shark, drew more notice from them (and thus cautionary withdrawl) than a human man did swimming; even one spearfishing. Luck was with him and against him as the Svefra pitted his skill against the various fish and their will to live. The older more canny ones easily evaded while the younger or less bright among the jewels undersea often became victims. Titus was enjoying the day, and ultimately even if one wasn’t fed, that was more than some people could say. The Svefra lived freer than most, unbound by the confines of more landlocked humans. But that didn’t keep them from being curious. Fishing only held so much appeal… as too did swimming with ones shark.

Randal Zor looked mildly surprised at the sudden appearance of the human off his beach. But after his initial surprise was over, his eyes tracked out to sea and he noticed the little casino anchored beyond the breakers above a fairly good fishing spot. The seas were calm, but had they been rolling then the little ship would have been obscured behind the foam of the waves.

Randal put down his hand planer and wiped his hands together and offered a smile. He walked forward and greeted Randal with a smile. He looked a bit puzzled at the Fratava, but smiled at the Svefra’s use of Common. “Hey there. I’m Randal Zor. One of the founding settlers here. It’s a board to use on the surf. I’ve found if you make them of the right material they will float and you can stand on them and ride the waves into the shore. It’s really fantastic and a good way to stay in shape and have fun. This soft life here in Syka is giving me flab.” The man said, laughing and patting his flat hard stomach.

“Hungry? I brought fruit along for a snack.”
He said, gesturing to the loose group with a few bananas, apples, a pineapple, and a handful of strange green fruit that seemed to be still partially attached to a broken off branch. All of it seemed fresh. “You thinking of settling here?” He asked, curious, giving Titus the once over with his sharp gaze that missed nothing. Titus looked like the kind of fit young male the settlement needed to thrive. But Randal wasn’t going to get excited. Svefra were notorious wanderers. Most never worked more than a few days in their life.

Gesturing at the board, Randal continued again, changing pace. “I can show you.. both how to make one and how to ride one.” He offered, knowing one thing Syka lacked was any sort of good companionship for her long sunny days.
