A sad smile climbed to the corner of Grim's lip, the last rooftop of what he once called home faded behind the outline of a hill outside the city he grew up in, one cut by a dirt road. As it did, the damn smell seemed to vanish, although slowly. Without any doubt, it was still there, ever present no matter where he set foot on, yet not nearly as strong as it was Sunberth.

The fragrance of death. Though fragrance might have been a bad way to put it. Sometimes it was unpleasant, and other times it was not,it tended to assume various forms. Still being new to his mark, the raven haired boy could hardly discern what came from what. However, in time, he was sure that the would get used to it. Adaptability, be like water - his mother would always say.

Ever since he received Dira's mark, he could feel things. And not only feel, but smell, see and hear them. He would spend days simply walking down the streets, getting to know the town he was raised in again. Every corner had it's history written in blood and death, every building, every man. That however never really surprise him, seeing that in every ditch there was a high chance that a body lay face first in the mud, throat cut, and purse emptied, only now they were more noticeable. Yet, for someone new to this as he was, it was too much to take. He needed to move somewhere, anywhere. What had happened was too monumental, too much went down.

Likewise, finally finding his father, or better yet, whatever was left of him in that mindless husk, was a memory he'd not want to return to. While he had accepted his passing a long time ago, that being a wound already well healed, what he saw that day he could not ever imagine. To think that such a man, with such a strong spirit could become one of those damned things? A rare moment of anger overcame him, if only for a moment. It just wasn't...

But that was behind him.

The question where was one to move would arise next, one he pondered long about. The thought of setting sail to Avanthal crossed his mind more than a couple of times. But he neither had the funds, nor the will to embark there, now that he had a mission set in front of him. Thus, the first opportunity that would show itself, Grim would use to leave the city. Maybe someday, he will make up on that promise?

Said opportunity emerged in the form of a small trading caravan, composed of three carts, and two armed guards. The carts were, asides from being loaded with various goods, carrying several passengers, each heading in the same direction. The city of Syliras.

Yet, arriving to his desired location wasn't quite an easy task. Sure, the only things he did was eat, sleep and sit, but that presented a challenge of it's own. Boredom appeared never to bother him so much as it did now. If only the carts would move a bit faster. Yet the merchants betrayed no signs of wanting to pick up pace, enjoying chatting with each other about the recent spike in corn prices.

Needless to say, the young Eiyon was not interested in such matters.

He sat on a rather large, sturdy looking, wooden box that contained a part of the transported merchandise. Planting the butt of his scythe on the floor, Grim rested his upper body weight on his weapon. More than several times had he tried catching a bit of sleep. Yet, every time he did so, the wheel would either runs across a hole in the road, or hit a sizeable rock, jerking the man back in a frustrated and awake state.

Zeltiva was a half an hour behind the caravan, and although Grim wished that they halted longer than to simply purchase the basic supplies, trade agreements were merciless to those that dared break the set deadlines, thus he had no say in the matter. All the vivid stories his father told him about the places he visited only served to ignite the wanderlust inside him.

Seeing as the Eiyon never really traveled before, as uneventful as the road was, the mere thought of the places he would visit brought forth the feeling of anticipation within him.

With Zeltiva behind them, slowly, the carts moved down the Kabrin road, continuing with their journey towards the great fortress city.

Death's Hand

With the city not far behind them, the dirt road would slowly become covered by a thin layer of snow as the caravan ascended a slight slope, wooden wheels creaking with every passed meter. As as Grim's gray gaze fell on the snowy sight behind him, his mind would wander, lost in the stark whiteness.

Memories would flood his mind again. Those of his father and himself playing in the snow, constructing a snowman that had his mother's dagger instead of a nose. Playing hide and seek behind the snow-capped graves. Just then, the Eiyon began to realize that he would miss his home more than he thought he would. Still, he was halfway to Syliras, and as much as leaving weighted on him, he did not regret it.

Grim winced as one of the traders raised his gruff voice, apparently calling out to someone. Removing his hood, the robed man scanned the area, curious to what all the commotion was about.

Not far ahead, he noted the thin visage of what appeared to be a girl. Dirty blond hair fell in torn uneven bangs up to her shoulders. Rags were wrapped around her body, revealing dark blue bruises on her bare shoulders and thighs. Her skin was rather pale, probably from the biting cold. The girl was ill protected from the weather, making Grim wonder how far she believed to make it on foot alone, and where.

"Oi!" Called one of the merchants, a Sunberthian named Bodrick. Yet, she marched on, oblivious to the caravan moving besides her. She moved at a snail's pace, her bare feet raising up slowly, only to dip themselves back into the snow, propelling her forward, ever so slightly. With each step she made, it seemed that the very next one would make her knees buckle.

"Hey!" Called the other trader, as he formed a shell around his mouth with his hands. Though Grim knew not from where he was, by overhearing a conversation, he knew that his name was Daniel.

As his voice became an echo in mountains, the girl halted, as if she had woken up from a deep slumber. She tilted her head, opening her mouth slightly, only to say nothing, much to Bodrick's disappointment. The caravan came to a complete halt after being given a signal by hand from the leader, who wished to converse with the blonde.

"Where are you headed?" Daniel asked as he leaned from his cushioned seat. The girl continued staring, betraying no response. " Where are ye headed to girl?" Asked the other trader as his large hand moved his friend aside.

"S-syliras..."

"Then yer in luck girl, we're just headin' that way!" Bodrick snorted, offering the traveler a wide smile. The girl continued staring, before dismissing him with a gesture of her head, only to turn around and continue walking. There was an odd moment of silence as all attention was directed to the front of the caravan. Grim began feeling somewhat uneasy, a strange smell being blown from the wind that came from the north. It was almost nauseating.

"Why, don't be silly, you cant possibly expect to get to Syliras on foot now can, you?" Said Daniel as he hopped from his seat, and onto the snow covered ground. He approached the girl swiftly, adding a bit of spring to his step. "Come now, hop on, there is a spot on the back for you." He added.

The woman halted as he neared, as if considering her options. Only after a little more persuading did she agree to travel with them. From the looks of it, the girl was not quite happy about how things played out, however was out of options. He couldn't understand the thought process behind someone even considering traveling to another city on foot during the winter, whats more, it appeared that she didn't even have proper footwear.

"Let me give you a hand..." Grim offered as she approached the last cart, extending out his arm in order to help her climb on. The girl appeared visibly startled as the Eiyon moved, observing his hand with a dose of distrust. Rather than accepting it, her own hand wrapped around the wooden fence surrounding the edges of the cart, and climbed on in a not so ladylike manner. Grim adorned a puzzled look on his face, before turning his hand around. Was it the mark?

"No luck with the ladies, eh lad?" Asled Daniel trough a laugh as he climbed on too, only to begin rummaging underneath some stacked furs. From out of there, he pulled out a thick winter coat, and a pair of rabbit skin boots. Both were handed to the newest addition to the caravan. She wrapped herself with the cloak and pulled on the hood it came with, obscuring most of her face.

The more than strong stench only intensified. It was an odd mixture of rotten eggs, spiced with fresh shyke and something else he couldn't place a finger on, something unnatural. His stomach twisted and turned as he continued breathing. It took all of his might not to form a grimace. Gods, if only they would move the damn caravan from this place...

The Eiyon concluded that he had gotten sick sometime during their travels, and that the symptoms were beginning to show only now. Then again, it was just maybe all this thing about winter. What little snow Grim saw seemed to vanish rather quickly. Was it the temperature? No. It was that goddamn smell. No matter what he tried, he could not get it out of his head. It lasted ever since they left Zeltiva behind, and hadn't stopped even now as the sun began setting down. Even when he tried breathing trough his mouth, something, something still made him so unbelievably repulsed...

"...told him that it isn't good for your skin." Came the words that finally made Grim open his eyes. He had attempted sleeping, hoping that once he woke up, he would be feeling better. Everything seemed to bother him. The wood was too hard, the furs his head had been resting on only a moment ago seemed too rough.

He threw another glance ad the person that shared the cart with him and the new girl. Bodrick's daughter, a pale brunette, easy on the eyes, a year or two younger than Grim, though far too talkative. She had been talking... well, one couldn't quite say talking seeing as the new girl never said a word in response, only nodding from time to time. Though, this evidently did not discourage her as she continued her monologue about mundane things, her friends and other things merchant's daughters talk about. However, the girl they had picked up seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say, her eyes never leaving the face of the one sitting next to her.

Her eyes, they were strange... Almost as if they had no life within them. Grim felt pity for her. He knew that the streets of Sunberth were a harsh mistress to those that lived on them, who knows what kinds of horrors she had to endure. And although he wasn't sure, but he believed that she was the source of the horrible stench that was haunting him all day long.

He was a resilient an, but Anna, the merchant's daughter, she appeared to not mind it in the slightest. Of course he would never say something, out of politeness of course, yet, if he were forced to spend another minute in the cart...

"Oh gods..." Uttered Grim before his hand rushed to cover his mouth. The Eiyon threw his torso over the rough wooden fence, only to empty out his stomach on the road. An acidic taste fell on his tongue as his dinner left him, followed by a little chorus of laughter from the merchants and their hired guards. Anna on the other hand, just raised a clean white tissue, offering it to the sick man.

"Can't handle a few holes 'nd rocks, eh boy?" Mocked the Sunberthian trader from up ahead, the laughter never truly dying inside his voice. Grim wiped his lips with the tissue, his eyebrows knitting together as he did. "Give the lad a rest. We should set up camp, it's getting dark." Chimed Daniel, ordering the caravan to a halt.

Death's Hand

"Something is not just right, eh pal?" Muttered Grim to the crow that stood petched on his shoulder, his voice low and tired. Dusk cocked his head to the side, his tiny black eyes staring at the Eiyon, betraying no response. However, even he was more silent than usual. The raven haired man stood some distance from the campsite, the weight of his body supported by an old tree. Though, not even the pleasant smell of the forest could overpower the wretched stench what every whiff of wind would bring. Still, it was not as bad as before.

Another gaze Grim cast in the direction of the set campsite. The carts that made up the caravan he had been traveling up until now were arranged in a circular manner, with various boxes, and the occasional tree in-between their holes. This way, those within their boundaries would feel somewhat safe, warmed by the fire that burned bright at the the center. Next to the fire, several tents, wooden beams and sticks, covered with rope webbing and thick furs stood stood, mostly unoccupied given that the travelers and their guards were next to the bonfire, one lit withing a circle of charred stones. Everyone seemed quite merry, eager to dig into the lamb that roasted over the small inferno. Grim on the other hand, could not think about eating currently, as he was sure that at the first attempt, the same scene from several hours before would commence. By Dira, even for someone who spent most of his life in Sunberth, that stench was just something else...

"The trick is to turn it slowly, so that every part cooks evenly." Said one of the armed guards as he rotated the iron rod the lamb was impaled on, the movements of his hands gracefull and steady. His eyes narrowed as he explained, his focus having an aura of his own. His friend just nodded whenever he felt a sufficient amount of time has passed, not really paying any attention to the one sitting next to him.

Grim took a passing glance trough the opening one of the wings of the the tent that the merchants occupied, spotting Daniel and Bodrick over a small detachable table. They appeared to be going over a ledger of sorts, silently debating on some matter. His daughter, and her friend were next to the fire, sitting on a thick bear hide.

"So, Lilith..." Said Bodrick's daughter as she spoke to her companion. The rest of what she said blurred out in Grim's mind, and only the name stayed. Within himself, the Eiyon repeated the name several times. It inspired a sense of uncleanness every time. Though, he did not know why, it was strangely, filthy.
