Paddling their feet in the sea

Ashka nodded when Jade told her that she'd left home by choice, and then lost much of the family she'd chosen. Her gaze flicked to Dina and then back to Jade's face when she learned that the girl was adopted, but that was all. In the pod everyone looked after the children communally, not just those born to them. You cared for the people you cared for. The past seemed to be a weight on both of them, and she shrugged. "Syka seems to be a place where a lot of people come to grieve and heal. And not just of sea-sickness."

The biting fish saved them from the conversation, and Ashka nodded with a smile and a sign of approval when Dina helped to kill Jade's fish. Syka was too small to welcome idle hands and a child needed to learn as well as play - look how much help Chaya was to her, and only a year older! It was a good sized fish too, enough for a meal and maybe a little over. Mischief gleamed in her eyes. "If you think that was strenuous, you should try a big one!" Ashka held her arms out wide to show the size she meant. It was an exaggeration, but not much of one. She'd seen some big fish around the area when she was out in the canoe. "But yes, fishing is a lot of quiet waiting, and then a lot of work all at once. If the fish are hungry, you can sometimes use the guts of one to bait the hook for the next. Otherwise it's best to discard them, especially in this heat."

She drew her knife, cut a hole up through her fish's lower jaw, then rolled the fish onto its back and made a single long, if slightly ragged cut up the belly from anus to gills. She cleaned the knife, sheathed it, and then picked the fish up. She wrapped one hand around the upper jaw and head, hooked the fingers of the other through the hole she had cut in the lower jaw, and pulled her hands apart. The lower jaw of the fish ripped out, and dragged all the inedible (by people) guts and innards out after it through the slit in the belly. "This makes it ready to cook, pretty much, and that size will do you both a meal. You want me to gut yours as well, or would you rather do your own?" She'd been gutting fresh fish for as long as she could safely wield a blade. To Ashka, fish blood and guts were nothing to be bothered about.

Dina jumped up and down excitedly after killing the fish without having to be helped. Jade was glad that her little was so happy to help. There were many children in Syliras that had given their parents a hard time. The blond had not understood why the adults allowed it to get out of hand. But another side of her kind of knew that anything could happen, and things could spiral out of control should a child be given everything. Even though it pained her to do it, the woman told her daughter no often. She did not want the little one to expect everything to be handed to her. The blond was not sure if it was the drykas upbringing or the anger she felt at parents who made their children into monsters by not setting boundaries.

“I hope to get a big one next time,” Jade stated with a smile when Ashka made fun of her, “no I need to learn how to butcher them.”

Nodding the girl knelt down and took her dagger from her boot before standing up right. Watching, the blond tried to remember if her father or mother had ever cleaned a fish. Nothing came to mind, so she imitated the motions that the woman before her did. The scales felt weird against her hand, the blond ran her dagger from the bottom of the jaw down to the tip of the tail. Stopping at the change from body to tail, she used the edge of her nail to see if the blade had went deep enough. Noting several place did not cut through all the way, she repeated the action in just those spots.

It did not take long for the girl to have all the guts taken out of the fish. She let them fall to the sand as Ashka's had during her demonstration. The girl would have to be meticulous when it came to removing the bones. The last thing that she wanted was for Dina to choke or herself to choke on the bones. The girl had heard often that bones could kill a person if ingested. She was unsure if it was from them getting hung up or not digesting properly. Either way it was not something the girl wanted to deal with in the near future.

“Want to continue fishing?” Jade asked looking at her.

Paddling their feet in the sea

Ashka looked briefly startled when Jade drew a knife from her boot - didn't it hurt to walk with that there? she wondered - but she stood back and let Jade deal with her own fish. People learned better from doing it themselves than from watching someone else do it after all. When Jade asked if she wanted to carry on fishing, she turned to look over the fish they had already caught. "You're wanting that big fish, are you?" she joked, keeping her tone light.

"We could try for it," she said slowly. "I don't like to catch more than one or two days of fish at a time because it goes off so fast in the heat. It's a waste to catch more than that and it isn't..." she paused, swallowed down the ache rising in her throat, gathered her words and her wits about her and tried again. "The people who brought me up taught me that the ocean provides enough for everyone, but only if you don't waste what it provides. So..." She trailed off wth a shrug. "We only have one day's worth each though, so we could try again now that you've seen what's involved. Or would you rather clean off the sand and salt water for now and try again another day?" Her posture shifted to evoke that she was unbothered either way.

She walked over to her discarded fishing pole and picked it up, running her fingers along the line to check for knots and weak spots before she either put it away or put it back into use. If Jade decided to continue, Ashka would explain what she was doing, add a new piece of bait to her hook, and cast it out into the waves once more. If not, she would begin to dismantle and pack away the fishing pole.

The blond listened as the girl explained that the fish would do well for the pair. She agreed looking out once more at the water. Ashka had a point, there was no way the mother and daughter could eat more than one fish at a time. Nodding she agreed that one would be plenty. A small laugh left her when Ashka teased about the “big fish.”

“Yes, but I think this will be plenty for one day. I will have to grapple with the “big” fish another day,” Jade stated with a smile.

Dina poked at the dead creature some wanting to see if it would move like it had before. Content when it didn't she ran over to Chaya wanting to play more. Smiling gently the mother saw no problem with giving the children more time together.

“Yes, let's clean these up and call it a day. I'm sure the girls would like to play more before it is time to return home,” Jade stated and moved away from the water.

The blonde took some time trying to figure out how to remove the hook. With a grunt the barbs on the end finally came back out of the lip. The girl put her pinky finger through the hole; it was easier to do that and be able to use her hands. Popping her neck the girl took the end of her shirt and was careful to clean the blood off the tiny sharp blades. The girl watched Ashka to learn how to put everything away properly so that it could be found again without any issues. Soon the sun had began to wane marking their time to depart, standing up the girl called for Dina to return before turning to Ashka.

“Thank you so much for teach me. I do hope I can return the favor one day,” Jade said and looked when her daughter hugged her leg, “what do you say?”

“Thank you for letting us fish with you, Mrs. Ashka. Can me and Chaya play again some time?” Dina asked with large eyes. After their good byes were said the pair headed home for the day.
