House of Glass

11 Spring 518

The Festival of Illusion began with a maze just as complex as the will of the city. Taking a slightly different form the walls turned to glass. While this made the navigation seem easier it often led to quite the frustration among many of the people living in the city. Frustration was no stranger to Alex as she could often see the places she wanted to go but not actually get to them. The thought of scaling the wall had crossed her mind but the slickness of the glass would make that nearly impossible without additional help.

Taking in a deep breath she let out a little sigh and just left the city take here where it may. Things normally worked out better for her when she stopped fighting and just went with the flow. Yesterday she managed to take in the sights of a few master potters, or at the very least masters compared to her. It always amazed her to watch a craftsmen working, the skill and dedication to master.

The Sun moved higher and higher into the sky reflecting off of some of the glass while using other bits to magnify its power. The heat and the light seemed to be unbearable in some area and Alex was quick to move through these as quickly as she could. Being blind in some parts of the maze she just held her hand out and let her fingertips guide her along the path. After several twists and turns she arrived at the end of the maze, it lead into a work space with a few others showing off their craft. Smiling softly the young women moved to an open workspace knowing from the day before that each of these spaces were just part of the festivities and open to anyone.

Taking the time to look over each of the tools she appreciated the quality of each item, they were far better then anything she had personally owned. She had only found its equal when she was back home. Next she would check the kiln only to find the glass was ready to work. The fires burned hot and ever air bubble had already made its way out. "Everything is to perfect." She muttered to herself with a small smile. She had never had the pleasure of having a workspace setup before she got to it. That had always been a task she was expected to do for others.

House of Glass

Avela was not in a particularly good mood that day.

Yesterday had actually been quite fun. The Festival of Illusions had opened up, and Avela had taken a break from her usual task of candlemaking to go and see the pottery. She'd gotten lost in the pottery maze and hadn't come out for several hours, but she had been in the sort of mood where that had been fun, exciting, a wonderful adventure.

Today, she was not in that mood, and for one very important reason. The wall of her cottage, the wall that was facing the street that morning, had decided to transform into glass.

It had done so while she was in the middle of changing, so the Konti had had to shriek and dive for cover behind her wardrobe so that she could finish putting her clothes on. She wondered if Ionu had found that funny, because she certainly hadn't. And really, once a day started that way, there was no getting it back.

She'd tried to stay home and work on candles, even work on translating her mother's journal, but she couldn't shake the feeling of eyes on her, even when she had turned her chair around so that her back was to the street. She felt very much like an animal in a cage or a fish in a bowl, and eventually, she had given up and gone out to see the maze again. Only to find that the maze itself was glass.

And only to find that she really had a very limited understanding of where the walls were.

Avela yelped as she walked into a glass wall for what felt like the hundredth time, this time smacking her forehead against the wall hard enough to make her eyes water. She made a little high-pitched sound of frustration in her throat, her hands clenching into fists. "Oh, petch this!" she said, taking a sharp right turn and nearly walking straight into a glassworker's workspace.

A familiar glassworker. One that Avela had actually met.

Avela felt the color rise to her face as she realized that Alex had probably seen her outburst, and she quickly unclenched her fists, smoothing out her clothes. "O-Oh, Alex!" she said. "Hi! It's...um, nice to see you! I didn't know you worked with glass."

Great job acting natural, Avela.

House of Glass

Taking a deep breath and letting out a little huff she sat the last object down. The mold was simple but very well made. A large part of here thought about trying to get as much work completed today as possible so she could sell it later. Her fear however was that like the walls anything she made out of glass would soon find itself in another form, made out of a different material.

Working outside was not something she was really use to, and if she had it was not during the day. The light emitting off of the glass was a great indicator on where in the workable range things were. This was just one more challenge the city would through her way.

Before she managed to get lost in thought again she hear her name and looked up. The expressionless look on her face quickly moved to a soft smile. It was good to see a friendly face after all the city had given her today. "Hello Avela! Yes I dabble a little bit." She said with a nod. She felt like she was a long way from making anything more then glass containers but she did work the stuff.

Reaching up she brushed a little hair out of her face before she said. "After what happened this morning I am glad to see someone I know. This glass has caused nothing but trouble for me all day." Starting the day off with a floor to ceiling window was not something she expected. Nor did she expect to see so many places and people but have no access to them directly.Shifting her weight from one foot to the other she continued. "I feel like the city has been teasing me all day long. I can see so many things I am not able to reach."

Mindlessly she picked up the first mold within arms reach. She slid her fingers over its edges just keeping her hands busy. Her stance Avela probably did not want to hear her complain about everything she had been through today so Alex decided to leave it here at least for now.

"Er... What are you doing in the city today?" She inquired partly wondering why she had even left the house in the first place. Her thoughts quickly returning to the thought of a butterfly under glass reminding her exactly why she left.
