Something had been harassing Tailyn’s parrots. She would wake up in the morning fully refreshed from a long night’s sleep and find her parrots tense, grumpy, and poorly rested. Her birds were jumpy, even when interacting with Tailyn whom they all knew to be a good friend. Worse yet, Nobody had begun plucking his feathers, a sure sign of intense stress. Tai had been quick to assume it had something to do with the monkeys who occasionally showed up around her home to personally vex her. But the thing about the monkeys was that they were pretty easy to notice. They were loud and wild, and both Tai’s personal parrots as well as the wild ones who roosted in the trees near her home greatly disliked the creatures and made tons of noise any time the creatures showed up nearby, creating an impossible to ignore cacophony of noise.

Whatever it was that had been bothering the parrots was quiet. Quiet enough not to wake the light sleeping Tai or Blue as they dozed indoors nearby. Fortunately, the bird’s cages had protected them, and Tai hadn’t lost any birds yet. But the stress was gradually wearing the poor creatures down, and the inarta knew that if she didn’t do anything soon then they could start getting sick, or worse, drop dead from the stress.

And so, the young woman did as she always did when faced with a trial, and took direct action. As much as she disliked using her birds as bait, whatever it was that was bothering them likely wanted them as a snack. So, Tai went through her usual night-time routine of making sure everyone was fed, getting her birds settled into their cages for the night, and triple checked that the entrance to their home was firmly locked. Tai brought Blue inside to her usual perch beside the bed and watched her companion nod off as Syna disappeared past the sea’s horizon.

Normally this would be the point where Tai would drop into bed herself and immediately pass out as she was nearly as diurnal as her bird friends were and found it difficult to stay awake once the light of day was gone. But today was different. Tai grabbed her short bow and arrows, gave them a kiss for luck, then settled down in the shadowy crook of a nearby tree within view of the cages to wait for something to happen.

As Tai waited, she was struck by how strange Syka was at night. Perhaps it was just because she was so unused to it, but it seemed as though every shadow in the darkness could be hiding a danger. The woman felt her senses stretched as taut as her bowstring. The rustle of parrot feathers seemed as loud as the scrape of metal on metal. Tai’s own breath and heartbeat hammered in her ears as loud as a drum. Still, she waited patiently daring not to move a single finger lest she scare that unknown presence away.

Despite her tension, Tai found herself struggling against the gentle lull of sleep. It was against the inarta’s nature not to fall asleep when staying still for long periods of time. Back in Wind Reach, she’d been scolded more than once for falling asleep while waiting for an ambush. Tai’s firm reminder to herself that she was not a child anymore and sleep was for the weak didn’t seem to make her any less tired. Even the nap she had taken earlier in day in preparation didn’t seem to have helped any. Tai felt her eyes grow heavier and heavier, and the thick darkness behind her lids began to descend...

Then, in that place half between wake and sleep, Tai heard a noise. It whispered softly in the canopy above, so gentle that if it weren’t so alien of a sound Tai might have slept straight through it. It was the soft brush of flesh against wood. The rustle of tree leaves pressed tight against branches before springing back up again as the presence passed. It was a slow, repetitive, patient breath coming somewhere in the canopy of trees above.

Tailyn’s eyes flew open and she stared up into the branches above her. Leth’s light shone clearly through the canopy, all but illuminating the small clearing of trees. Her body was so tense and forcefully still that her arms trembled with controlled effort. Rapidly, her eyes flicked from one place to another, searching for movement. She saw a flash of red that she knew to be one of the wild parrots keeping company in her trees, the bird glancing around sleepily before closing its eyes and returning to rest with its head beneath it’s wing. Another flicker of movement, a flicker of yellow as a pair of parrots, nestled side by side, fluttered their wings. And then Tai saw the slow march of yellow on brown weaving its way through the trees, as confident and at home as the birds it circled.

Tailyn felt her heart go up into her throat. A snake! She stared in horror as it casually threaded itself through the branches above her, its massive bulk somehow easily supported by the branches that to Tai seemed as though they couldn’t possibly hold it. It was the largest snake Tai had ever seen in her life. Surely these parrots couldn’t be more than just a snack to it, right?

Tai was suddenly aware of her hand cramping up as she clutched her bow. She was positive the creature hadn’t seen her yet, but even if it had, could it possibly even consider her a threat? She gritted her teeth, and as quietly as possible she threaded an arrow into her bow. The bulk of the creature made for a tempting target, but Tai was suddenly nervous at the prospect of hitting the beast only to have caused it a superficial wound and watch the beast speed away, or worse, turn on her and decide to attack. After a moment, her eyes found the beast’s head. She took a slow, deliberate breath, pulled the bow string back as far as it could go, aimed, and released.

The arrow hissed through the air, but even before it connected Tai could see it go wide and thud into the side of a tree. She clenched her teeth in irritation, but at least the snake hadn’t seemed to notice. Unfortunately, it was now zeroing in on a solitary red parrot perched in a branch just above where the beast lurked. In the dim light, Tai could all but see the beast’s eyes glitter in anticipation, and it’s mouth parted to reveal needle thin teeth. Tai loaded up another arrow, gritting her teeth. As the snake turned its body to move towards its prey, the back of the creature’s head perfectly exposed a yellow diamond of color.

Tai zeroed in on it, imagining it as a bullseye. How many times had she sat herself down at the Wind Reach training yard and aimed for the red bullseye, over and over and over again? Tai remembered those moments where she nailed the target. How the weapon felt in her hand. The tension of the bow string. The heat of her muscles straining to hold the bow steady. She remembered all those things and struggled to make sure her body had felt just as it did in those moments. With a soft and eager breath, Tai exhaled and released.

For all the petching good it did her! Apparently relying on your godsdamned years old memories to fire a bow did shyke all to command an arrow to go anywhere even close to the petching target! Perhaps she forgot to take into account the stray breeze swirling in from off the coast. Perhaps it was just bad luck. Maybe she was just that petching bad at shooting. Whatever the reason for it, the arrow veered wide once again and sunk its wayward self into the trunk of the tree. Tai tensed for a moment, wondering if the snake might have noticed her. Being noticed might have been preferable, seeing as the snake suddenly lunged itself forward and sunk its teeth into the poor wild parrot’s body.

All around Tai, the parrots began panicking. Wild shrieks echoed through the canopy of trees as the parrots came awake and began fleeing as the snake casually began forcing the stray bird into his gullet, inch by inch. Tai fought the nausea threatening to overwhelm her, and charged forward from her hiding spot. The parrots might have to suffer through this, as they weren’t a danger to this beast, but she sure as shyke was! She slid forward down onto one knee and glanced overhead.

Directly overhead was the snake massive brown bulk of the monster. Tai strung an arrow, pointed the bow at the monster’s giant girth, gritted her teeth, and fired. The arrow missed, but it struck the branch with such raging force that it vibrated. The snake hesitated in swallowing its meal and turned its head downwards, tail feathers splaying from the monster’s mouth and providing a perfect red target. Tailyn didn’t give the beast any time to consider the situation. She loaded an arrow, aimed, and fired, all in one graceful motion.

The arrow sunk itself straight into the snake’s throat. The monster’s body jerked hard, and Tai watched with horror as it vomited up the body of the parrot, even as blood billowed from its throat and onto the branches below. The parrot’s body struck the ground squarely at Tai’s feet, but the woman only needed a quick glance to tell that the bird had probably died at the first bite. She glanced back upwards at the snake as it spasmed in the branches. The wood creaked from the weight of the creature’s coils thrashing. Even Tai knew the beast would probably die in a moment, but the dead body of the parrot at her feet spurred a thirst for vengeance.

Once more, the inarta loaded an arrow and fired it upwards. Again. And again, and again. Only one of the arrows missed. The other two found their way into the snake’s thrashing body, and soon the tremors were too much for the branches holding the beast up to handle. Tai was so focused on her relentless assault that it wasn’t until the branches began snapping that she even had a spare thought to think she might be in danger.

Remarkably, reflexes kicked in. Tai jumped backwards, just as the thrashing and arrow riddled beast came crashing down to the leaf-covered canopy floor. She only just narrowly avoided being crushed by the beast, but the creature continued to thrash and snap as it spasmed. Its girth slammed up against the parrot cages, and Tai suddenly had a horrible vision of the beast smashing the cages open with the strength of it’s coils. Inside their cages, her parrots shrieked with fear. Tai knew she had to end this, right now, before any more damage was done. The woman loaded another arrow into her bow, and realized with a sinking sensation how difficult it would be to finish this creature in a single blow with it struggling so furiously. Still, she had to at least try.

With a deep and shaky breath she fired yet another arrow. Three more arrows found themselves in the dirt and without a speck of blood on them. But the thrashing of the beast was gradually growing more still, and it raised its head to stare at Tai, opening its mouth to let out a weak hiss that revealed needle-thin fangs. Tai’s hands, shaking with adrenaline, faltered as she drew back her bow and the arrow fell short. It made no difference. With that last act of defiance, the snake collapsed in a coiled heap on the ground, tongue out and body still. A few beats passed, and Tai’s hands shook. When she finally came back to herself, she rushed over towards her panicked group of parrots.

“It’s alright! Calm down, it’ll be okay!” It took a good half a bell to calm her poor panicked birds down. When it was finally done, and everyone had calmed down enough for them to fall back asleep, the woman found herself staring at the giant chunk of snake meat now decorating her outdoor living space.

“What the petch am I supposed to do with this?” Tai muttered.

Fortunately, Tai knew someone who was always in need of meat and she still owed him for his help in finding Lucky for her. As weird as eating a snake might be, it seemed horrible to let all this meat go to waste when someone in the settlement could be eating it. Besides, if she brought him the hunk of meat, he might be able to give her some tips on where to find some more baby parrots. Favors for favors was just how it was done in Syka.

Tai wasn’t quite so rude as to take the beast to him still riddled with arrows, so she at least took time to remove all the various points penetrating the beast, and to collect the arrows that hadn’t found their mark. Two of the arrows that had sunk their way into the giant of a snake, including the one that had been the killing blow to the throat, were damaged beyond repair and Tai set them aside for disposal later. Remarkably, all the rest of her arrows seemed to be in good condition and she cheerfully returned them to her quiver. Tai did not fail to neglect the dead parrot that had been the snake’s attempt at a meal. There was no lava burial possible for this poor soul so Tai simply carried the poor creature to the edge of her five acres and scraped up enough of the dirt with her hands to afford it a simple burial. Finally, Tai returned to the snake’s body. Then, with a heavy sigh, Tai lifted the creature’s dead weight into her hands and dragged it towards the Tidepool Bar.

It took near to three bells for Tai to drag the dead weight all that distance, and by the time she made it the woman was convinced her arms were going to fall off, and had nearly given up for times over. She arrived at Stu’s door sweat streaked, fuming, and stinking of sweat and snake. Stu, being the natural calming presence that he was, had the woman calmed down, fed, and hydrated within half a bell. In that time, Tai managed to tell the bartender the story and he was soon shaking his head with amazement and chuckling at her tale.

“Well, I’m flattered that you’d bring it to me. We’ll be able to feed a lot of people with this. And it’ll make a great story to retell.”

“The story is yours to tell! I’m done with it! It was awful. I never imagined I’d have to fight such a huge and awful thing. I’m just glad it’s over with.”

Stu smiled kindly at Tai. “Well, if you wind up fighting any more snakes, feel free to bring them my way.”

“Yeah, you can come pick them up yourself if you don’t mind.”

This provoked a laugh out of the man, which was contagious enough to send Tai into a fit of giggles along with him. After they’d both settled down, Tai eyed the man with a sly grin.

“Don’t suppose you’ve found any more baby parrots for me?”

“I might have a few ideas. Let me pour you another drink and we’ll talk.”
