Parcel Puzzle

27 Summer 518

Ashka was sifting through a rock pool looking for edible seaweed. She spotted the tiny feathery brown stems of pepper dulse on one of the rocks and picked a handful off the seasoning to flavour her fish. Movement caught her eye and she saw one of the occasional Svefra traders pull up to the wooden dock, hitch her casinor to it, and head for the Mercantile with a heavy pack bouncing on her back. She didn't think much of it except to mentally note that it would be a good time to see what had been brought once the Svefra had gone.

Another seaweed, green this time, floated like a thin scum on the surface of the pool, and Ashka dipped her hand in and trailed it across to stir it. She was trying to see if it was gutweed, which had strands like tubes, or sea lettuce, which was both flatter and more splayed out. Both could be eaten, but they needed to be prepared differently. Gutweed was best dried out a little and then fried crispy so that it crunched and crumbled when you bit down. Sea lettuce was better tossed into soup and left to simmer, or eaten raw in a salad. She'd confused the two once - and that once had been disgusting enough to make her not want to risk it again.

Gentle wafting of water stirred the weed enough that she saw the tubes open and drift shut again. It was definitely gutweed. She drew her hand across the rock pool more firmly, scooping up strands as she went. She had time to prepare it before their main evening meal, and both she and Chaya adored the stuff. She was careful though not to take all of it, but to leave some to regrow for later.

Parcel Puzzle

Postby Ashka on July 14th, 2018, 4:45 pm

Ashka had gathered enough seaweed for now and was running through the list of what extra equipment she would need to pick up to browse the edge of the jungle when the Svefra reappeared, with a net bag of fresh fruit strapped over the top of her pack. Juli was beside and lingered long enough to point out Ashka's direction and talk to the Svefra for a moment. The gesture snagged at the corner of Ashka's gaze and she looked up in time to see the Svefra wind her way down the Mercantile's steps and make a bee line towards Ashka rather than back to her ship.

Fear surged, hollowing Ashka's guts out like a tide hollows out a rock pool. What did the Svefra want with her? She was gone, landed, pulled out of the sea and left. Her own pod hadn't wanted her, not as she was. Did this one mean to taunt her over her loss? Play a prank on her? A faint whisper of hope tried say this might be an invite to return, but the fear over ran it and drowned it out. She mastered her face if not her fear, locked her expressions down, and straightened to wait for her fate.

The Svefra looked her up and down, eyes lingering on the blue scarf, and asked, "Are you Ashka, late of Breakingwave pod and Emerald clan?"

That had been her mother's pod - her pod even. It took Ashka a moment to recognise the name of her father's clan in Fratava rather than in Pavi or even Common, but when she did, she nodded. She didn't entirely trust her voice with the hollowness of fear clamouring to get out.

"Good."The Svefra woman reached into her pack, pulled out a parcel, and shoved it at Ashka. "Your cousin wanted you to have this. Said you were in Riverfall, or would be, but when I docked, you weren't. Took a while to find where you'd gone or it would have reached you for your birthday."

Parcel Puzzle

Ashka swallowed hard and took the parcel that had been thrust at her with both hands. She didn't remember any cousins that would have sent anything to her. It felt long and thin and hard. Rough sacking had been wrapped around it and tied tight with cord. The roughness of it grated against the calluses on her fingers. She swallowed again and managed a watery smile and a murmured thanks.

The Svefra nodded in response and strode off to her ship without waiting for any more of a reply than that. Ashka watched her go with the fear changing to yearning for the sea that hollowed her out still further. She sagged onto the beach beside the seaweed that she had gathered, dropped the parcel beside her, unopened, and buried her head in her arms.

"Ash?" Chaya's voice brought her back to herself. "What is it?"

Ashka lifted her head to look at her sister. The sun hadn't moved much, so she hadn't sat there long. "Someone sent a gift," she said, her voice feeling as rough in her throat as the sacking felt against her hands. "I think it's a gift. I - haven't opened it."

Chaya rolled her eyes. "Why not? That's what gifts are for isn't it? Opening?"

Ashka swallowed. If Chaya didn't feel the fear or the upwelling memories of constant rejection, she didn't want to lay those on her sister. She reached out a hand and slowly picked the parcel up, laying it on her lap. She picked at the knots that held it shut while Chaya fidgeted with impatience beside her. At last, the wrapping fell away, and she held a slender silver wand and a letter.

Ashka, child of my mother's youngest sister

It is hard to be caught between sea and land. I have found this very helpful in my travels, and from what I have heard, you will also.

Marya Seaglass

The back of the letter held instructions for using the wand to clean water. Ashka found them blurring as her eyes filled with tears and pushed the letter away. Someone wanted her, someone welcomed her, someone had thought to give her the means to go home to the sea whether she ever gained Laviku's mark or not.

ItemPlot point item: Wand Of Purification - This wand of gleaming silver, when plunged into water, will cleanse the water of any impurities and make it safe to drink. Even the worst smelling off colored water will turn into pure crystal clear water
