”That’s all, thank you.”

Kamilla huffed in annoyance as she made her way down and out of the stilted ‘building’ known amongst settlers as The Syka Mercantile, which in her opinion was not much more than an elevated hut with a very basic selection of wares. Of course she wasn’t surprised by it, Syka was after all a small settlement and not a giant bustling city so it was to be expected, though that didn’t make things any less inconvenient. Another huff escaped the mage’s lips as she continued down the blessing that was the cobbled path, currently awkwardly lugging a giant roll of fabric along with her, which was not the simplest task. Especially with a still healing leg.

She was currently on her way to one of the bungalows to meet a client, Uta, who’d requested that Kamilla make her a new dress. She’d met Syka’s botanist two days earlier at The Panacea, Uta coming in to supply Jansen with a batch of healing herbs and bumping into Kamilla who’d just been there for some healing. The akalak healer had done a miraculous job with the bite wound she’d received during the monkey onslaught, but her thigh still hurt, even now.

It seemed that despite having never met her, news that there was a seamstress in Syka had spread quickly as it took Uta only a few moments to ask Kamilla if she’d be willing to make her a new dress. Of course, Kamilla was not about to turn down a job, Syka may have been bare bones but the founders had made it clear that everyone was required to contribute or leave, the latter not being an option. Syka had proven to be more trouble than it was worth thus far, Kamilla hadn’t even been around for a season and she’d already been lost in the jungle twice, the second time nearly ending in death by monkeys... or Wanolo baboons as they were apparently known. Regardless, there was something reinvigorating about the small tropical settlement that the mage hadn’t grown tired of just yet.

”This kind of labour is beneath me.” The words were huffed out in annoyance as Kamilla continued to lug the awkwardly sized roll of green cloth. She’d only need roughly four square yards for the dress, but had decided she might as well by the entire ten squared yard roll, since supplies weren’t easy to come by in Syka. Other than that, she’s also spotted a leash and bought it in hopes that it would be able too keep Yennefer from starting off into the deadly jungle again. Maybe Kamilla would actually be able to bring her pet along with her, or at least that was her hope. ”At least I won’t have to carry her everywhere now.” The words were huffed out, the mage quickly running out of breath under the intense Syka heat.

She was nearly there, their planned meeting place being one of the empty bungalows, apparently built by the founder Randal. Uta has suggested they use a vacant one for the measuring and dress making since her own home was a bit more difficult to reach, a decision Kamilla was especially grateful at the moment.

The mage was completely unimpressed by having to lug her own supplies around, she’d need to find a helper or some other kind of solution soon. Even a wheelbarrow would be better than all the effort she was currently going through. Not that she’d be caught dead pushing one around, but it did give her an idea. She’d make a mental note to brainstorm the idea some other time.

Finally arriving at the wooden bungalows, having had to take a few short breaks to catch her breath, Kamilla doing her absolute best not to scowl at any passerby that looked at the out of breath young woman funny, she let out a loud sigh of relief. The heat remained unseeable and she could not wait to get into the shade, but even then the heat wasn’t escaped, only lessened. If she were to stay in the settlement she would have to find a much more effective way of remaking both cool and comfortable.

Still trying to catch her breath, Kamilla began looking between the bungalows, realising she didn’t know which one Uta had wanted to meet her at. An groan filled the air as the mage imagined having to lug the heavy fabric roll up to each bungalow and knock to find out who was within. The ordeal she was picturing in her head seemed like her own personal hai for the time being.

Thankfully, a moment later, Kamilla was delivered from her suffering as the short haired botanist stepped out of one of the bungalows and waved for her to enter. ”Hey there Kamilla, come on in. It’s much cooler in the shade!” The woman’s friendly invitation would not need to be issued twice as Kamilla had already lifted the fabric roll up into her arms and was walking towards the bungalow, cradling the heavy fabric in her arms as if it were the lightest baby. There was no way she was going to let this woman see her trudge[/u] into the bungalow dragging a heavy object, she made sure to put on her best act of being both graceful and at ease, despite the pain she was currently experiencing.

[i]”Please Kamilla, come in. I’m glad you came, all my other clothes are covered in some form of herbs. It’s so bad that I sometimes have to run tests on the clothing to figure out what kind of herb had messed on it.”

The mage let out a friendly laugh, but she was certain that she would never be able to relate to such a ridiculous situation. ”So, you wanted a dress? What kind?”- There were tons of dress options to choose from but the problem would be Kamilla’s ability, yes she was a seamstress but that didn’t mean she was a good dressmaker.

”Oh yes, I haven’t given it much thought... hmmm?”

Stepping out of the Sykan sun and into the shade left an amazing cooling sensation on her skin, yes the temperature itself might not have changed much but regardless, Kamilla was grateful for even the slightest change. ”How about a nice plain and simple summer dress. Good for strolls on the beach.”

Uta seemed to like the idea. ”That sounds perfect, yes. I want that.” Kamilla simply nodded slightly in relief as the client made her request, mostly because a summer dress was one of the simplest and only clothing items that Kamilla knew how to make.

Looking around the bungalow as she entered, Kamilla was just as impressed by the interior as she had been by the exterior. It seemed that Randal really knew how to build a home that was fairly small but did not have to sacrifice quality of life. Each of the designated areas was very well spaced and orientated in order to make the most of the small space available.

Finally getting to place the thick roll of fabric onto the dining table, the mage spun around on the spot to face her client, brown eyes running up and down the woman’s body several times as Kamilla visualised the kind of dress she would be making. ”So...”

”...When we met, you said that I should pick the color for you, since you didn’t know what you wanted. I thought why not green, you are a botanist after all.” As she spoke, Kamilla placed a gentle hand on the roll of green cloth, before looking through her bag and retrieving her sewing kit.

”Sure, that’s a good idea.”

To Kamilla, Uta sounded slightly less enthusiastic than she had been before, but the mage was far too occupied with doing her job to worry about a petty situation like a slight lack of excitement.

Pulling her measuring tape from her sewing kit, Kamilla moved towards Uta and began measuring the woman’s waist and shoulders. Their measurements were nearly the same, with Uta being slightly shorter than herself, but for the most part they only differed a centimetre or two, which would help make her job a bit easier.

The measuring process was quick and painless but it was also the least strenuous stage of making a dress, from then on things would be much more difficult. ”So, Uta, you’re the botanist here in Syka, can you give me any tips when it comes to picking which plants are safe to eat?” The question was mostly aimed to distract but at the same time Kamilla was genuinely curious, after all, she’d already had two ordeals in the jungle since her arrival and despite never wanting to set foot in it(or see another monkey) again, the mage still wanted to be prepared just in case.

The woman seemed to brighten up hearing the question, clearly eager to share her knowledge.

Well, in the jungle there’s only one major rule you have to follow. If it’s pretty and bright, it’s probably dangerous. Usually, bright colors serve as a warning to any jungle predators that the creature or plant in question, is poisonous. So if you can... stay away from those, no matter how beautiful or tasty they might look.” She added a shrug to the end of her point, seemingly boasting about her superior knowledge of jungle flora.

Kamilla supposed that it made a lot of sense, bright colors would attract more attention from anything, so by becoming poisonous or dangerous, the bright plants were effectively defending themselves from being eaten.

Measurements complete, Kamilla made her way back to the dining table, rolling the bolt of green fabric over the entirety of its surface and retrieving a piece of white chalk from her kit. While the mage had never actually made a dress herself, she had worked at two different clothing stores, each one of note in its respective city and so she’d been involved in at least some of the steps of dressmaking.

At Yvette’s in Zeltiva, she’d had to sew the different compartments of the dresses together, from there learning exactly which patterns to use as well as how to remain polite no matter how disinterested or annoyed she was when it came to socialites and their meaningless lives. Despite her working environment, the owner of the business, Yvette, was a talented seamstress in her own right, one who had risen to such heights in Zeltiva that it was her designs and store that determined the fashion trends of the wealthy and affluent of the city.

Her job in Riverfall had been a bit different, the city of the Akalak had an entirely different take on fashion and clothing in general, a lot of leather. There, she’d found a job at Red Diamond Fashion where the majority of her days were spent cutting out the different parts that would then become various dressed, pants, shirts and skirts. Her time there had been far more pleasant and tolerable than her time at Yvette’s, even her coworkers had been decent enough.

Between what she’d learned from each of her jobs, Kamilla was fairly confident that she’d be able to successfully make a decent enough dress for Uta. In her mind’s eye Kamilla was picturing a very simple and plain summer dress, which was exactly what the botanist had requested. Sleeveless, comfortable and free had been the woman’s request.

”So, since you have my measurements do you still need me for anything? I have a few errands I was hoping to run today.”

The woman’s question came as somewhat of a relief to the seamstress who had been worried about having to maintain a conversation and pretend that she was completely sure of what she was doing. ”That’s no problem at all, I might actually work faster if I’m alone. Maybe.” She tried to dampen her smile ever so slightly in order not seem too eager.

”Okay, ill see you a bit later in the day then. I’m off.”

With that the woman spun on her heel and disappeared from sight, leaving Kamilla to sigh in relief. With the lack of company, she would be able to work without concerns about being judged or seeming pleasant. While the woman leaving was a welcome absence, Kamilla could already feel the small hole her absence left behind, since gaining her to ‘companion’ the mage had grown accustom to having company without needing much reaction, though Roo never did shut his petals.

”It would be nice to have those two around while I worked, maybe it’ll be easier now that I have a leash for Yennefer... though I’m sure as hai not lugging both Roo AND my supplies around. I really need to figure that out.”

She’d already come up with a potential solution to that problem, while an ordinary wheelbarrow would do just fine for most people, Kamilla was not keen on the thought of having to push one around and she doubted she could afford to pay someone to do it for her. Luckily, as an animator, she had options that others did not.

Returning to the task at hand, Kamilla began by folding the fabric over itself once, so that a double layer now rested across the dining table of the impressive bungalow. From there she would have to draw an outline for each component of the dress using the measurements she’d taken of Uta and cut those out. After all that she would be approximately halfway with creating the dress. It was going to be a long day, but there was no point in procrastinating any longer, she wanted to get the job over and done with. Besides the welcome privacy, she also had the relatively cooler interior of the bungalow on her side and a few fruits she’d brought with in case she’d gotten hungry. She’d was well prepared.

”Let’s just get this over and done with.” One more sigh as a farewell to her relaxation and a very exaggerated feline-like stretch, a few subtle cracks and pops coming from her spine, and she was ready to go.

Getting straight to work, Kamilla began using the measuring tape to mark the outline of each component of the dress, using Uta’s measurements and adding an inch or two as was customary. Since the dress was sleeveless she’d only need to cut out two parts, the skirt and bodice, both of which had simple enough shapes.

As simple as drawing outlines on fabric using chalk may have sounded, the process itself took at least twenty chimes, Kamilla doing her absolute best to make sure each segment was properly measured and shaped, but she eventually persevered. ”That’s one thing done.” Dusting the chalk off of her hands, she was ready to move on to the next step.

Running her hands through her long mass of dark hair, Kamilla began to gather as many of the strands as possible above her head, tying them into a messy bun, though several fugitive strands found a way to escape.

Not wanting to waste too much time on unnecessary things, Kamilla jumped right back into the fray, grabbing the scissors from her kit and beginning to slowly and very carefully cut out each component of the dress, being especially cautious to keep the lines straight. It was slow and tedious work but at least things were moving along.

Meanwhile, the mage’s mind drifted to other, more magical, things... her wheelbarrow idea in particular. She would need to pay Syka’s woodworker a visit, anyone capable of making a cart would do. Then, she’d need some for of reflective surface to attach or set into the cart, preferably a gemstone, though she doubted she’d find one in the settlement. She hadn’t heard of any Syka mines, just yet.

A dozen or so chimes later, daydreams aside, Kamilla had successfully cut out all of the components that would eventually come together to become the dress, so far, so good. The only things left to do now were to hem the components and then sew them together, both easily being the most time consuming stages of the process, but at least she’d put most of the steps behind herself.

Setting each cut out component out side by side, after removing the remainder of the roll of fabric, Kamilla could now see that she now had for pieces of material, two for the bodice and two for the skirt. She decided to move the skirt pieces beneath the bodice pieces in order to get a feel for how the dress would look after completion. She did not like the result, something felt like it was missing.

Looking down at her own dress gave her no ideas and suddenly, Kamilla found herself wandering around the bungalow in thought. Every now and then, the mage would pass by the dress components, pausing for a moment before moving to circle the table once more.

After several chimes of frustrated thought and only after eyeing the leash she’d bought for Yennefer, Kamilla was finally struck with what she’d felt had been missing from the dress. A belt.

With this new splash of inspiration, Kamilla returned to the roll of fabric, making use of the thinner pieces remaining after she’d cut out the components and this time cutting a long narrow rectangle of material which she planned to turn into a belt to place between the bodice and skirt. The piece itself was barely two inches in width and slightly longer than Uta’s waist in length.

”Okay...” She began, speaking to no one but herself as she took a seat at the table, retrieving several pins and using them to keep the material in place as she folded the edges inward. The process itself, considering how extremely accurate she needed to be, took at least fifteen chimes.

Next up was the actual hemming and to do that she would need her needle and thread, a loud groan escaping her lips as she began the struggle of threading the needle. It took Kamilla several tries before she finally got the thread through the miniature hoop and let out a smile and sigh of relief.

Hemming was a simple enough process that involved a relatively easy sewing technique, it was something Kamilla was very used to from her old jobs but at the same time it did not make the process any less dreadful to the young mage. Despite its ease and simplicity, hemming was extremely time consuming and even more mind-numbingly boring. Slowly sewing the folded border into place, with quick neat and repetitive sewing pattern.

It took Kamilla almost half a bell, just to finish hemming the first of the two bodies components and it was only then that the seamstress realised that she’d made a mistake, hand going to face in disappointment. ”Of course I petched it up.” Her mistake was a simple but important one, she’d always wondered why the establishments she’d worked at had used double layers of material for each component and now she knew. Unfortunately it was a bit too late.

Looking at the first piece of the bodice that she’d just hemmed, Kamilla could clearly see the stitches made by the hemming bordering the entirety of the piece, something that was not supposed to be there. If she’d used two layers of cloth for each cut out component, the hemming would have remained invisible by being hidden beneath the second layer of cloth.

Sighing in defeat, Kamilla decided that she would not allow the mistake to slow her down, she’d just complete the dress and hope it was to the client’s liking. Thankfully, her hemming pattern had been very neat and consistent, something that gave the dotted border of stitches look somewhat purposeful and stylistic.

With that, Kamilla moved on to hemming the second half of the bodice, then eventually getting to the belt and two skirt components, a procedure that took the mage at least two bells to complete, at which point Uta came to check in.

Hearing the woman enter, Kamilla’s attention was moved in her direction, the mage sitting back in the dining chair she’d been stuck to for the past two bells. The hemming has taken quite some time and she was sure it was nearing later afternoon by now, though in Syka the sun glared down on the land until the very last rays of sunlight disappeared beyond the horizon.

”How’s it going? I brought us some lunch.”

A friendly smile appeared on the mage’s face in response to Uta, ”I’m nearly done. It’s taken a bit of time but it shouldn’t be more than a bell now.” Honestly, she estimated it would take half the time she’d said it would, but it didn’t hurt to give herself some room to rest. ”And thanks... I’m actually starving.” She hadn’t realised it before, but the mention of food had lit a fire in her belly.

”Okay, well let’s eat then.”

Kamilla got to her feet, raising her arms above her head and arching her back in a very feline stretch, compliments of the deceased mage Felius, who’s memories and habits continued to reside in her mind. It had been so long since she’d been cursed with the mage’s memories in Sahova that most of the unwanted outbursts and bad habits, like purring, had been either dampened or completely trampled while some of the lost bothersome habits like stretches and grooming had been left unbothered for the most part. She did still get flashes of Felius’ own life now and then, nothing useful though. The most memorable memory of all being the man coughing up a hairball. He’d been elated, Kamilla less so.

Doing her best to clean up her work station, Kamilla packed all the tools she no longer needed, into her kit and moved the rest of the items out of the way by placing them on the far side of the table. She took a seat opposite the botanist who had already presented two empty plates and was now dishing fruit salad into each. Fruit was abundant in Syka, the few fading bruises across Kamilla’s skin was a reminder of that.

Eyeing the food hungrily, Kamilla couldn’t wait to dig in as Uta finally presented the cutlery, retrieving a set for herself and smiling in the mage’s direction. ”I tried to get the biggest assortment of fruits as possible in here, I hope you enjoy it.” With that, both women began their meal, Kamilla’s stomach eager to be filled. The mage hadn’t eaten since the early hours of the morning and even then it hadn’t been much of a meal, just some bread and fish, though she did have a fondness for fish ever since... Damn you, Felius.

Both women ate in silence for about a chime before the awkward atmosphere began to reach its breaking point, Kamilla aware of it but not willing or interested in being the one to speak first. The mage was quite happy to continue eating her fruit salad in silence, toughing the awkwardness out for the longest possible time, although it did come as a relief when Uta finally opened her mouth to do something other than eating.

”Uh, Kamilla, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what’s with the bruises and bandage?”

A small smile appeared on the mage’s face, hearing the botanist’s question. If she’d been curious about it since Kamilla’s arrival then she was impressed that Uta was able to contain herself for as long as she had.

”I mean, I saw you at The Panacea soon after you received them, I assume. But I never actually asked what happened.”

Another smile from Kamilla as she finished chewing a juicy piece of mango. ”Monkeys...” she began, placing another piece of fruit in her mouth and proceeding to chew on it without any sign that she intended to elaborate, until she’d finally swallowed. ”I went out to find Estuary Cave and got attacked by a troupe of monkeys, horrific things. Pelted me with rancid fruit; which is what caused the bruises.” She chose to omit the part about having accidentally killed one and purposefully killed three more with the assistance of the dog kelvic woman.

”Monkeys? What did they look like?”

Kamilla’s face pulled tight into a slight frown as she wondered what the woman intended to gain from that information, but eventually figured it couldn’t do any harm to tell her. ”White fur, dark skin... uh, they had these red markings and...”

”No tails?”

”Uh, yeah. How did you guess?” A dumb question, Uta had been in Syka for a lot longer than she had, or at least that was what Kamilla assumes. The woman was the local botanist after all.

”Those weren’t monkeys, they were Wanolo Baboons... Bothersome little primates.”

Uta sounded far too entertained by the idea of these ‘Wanolo Baboons’.

”Well then yes, those...” Kamilla made no attempt to hide the hatred of the creatures in her voice, after all, the Baboons had very much tried to kill her and the kelvic and had damn near almost succeeded too. The thought of her own helplessness only filled the mage with disappointment in herself. How had she been so endangered by a group of monkeys while she held the power of djed in her hands? It was shameful.

Not having much else to say on the topic of monkeys, Baboons or any other kind of pronates, the two women continued to eat the rest of their meals in an awkward silence similar to what they’d experienced only moments ago. Kamila did her best not to make it worse by focusing the entirety of her attention on her bowl of fruit.

Finishing up the last bits of her meal, the fruit salad having gone down quite nicely, Kamilla noticed that the botanist’s bowl had been empty as well, the woman smiling back at her. ”Thank you for the food. It was wonderful.” The duo had not discussed anything other than the dress during their negotiations, so the woman bringing her lunch was unnecessary, but appreciated.

”That’s no problem, Kamilla.”

It still surprised Kamilla, how foreign things like hospitality and friendship were to her. In the seven years since she’d fled Sunberth she’d almost always been alone and lacking in genuine company. Of course, there was the odd acquaintance or colleague here and there but few very people really stood out as friends. Because of this self imposed isolation, Kamilla was well aware of how rusty her social skills were, a shortcoming that had only been intensified during her time on Sahova, dealing with the nuit and their very trade like communication. Something for something and nothing for nothing. That was the Sahova way, even when it same to things like simple information or directions.

Snapping out of her little daydream, Kamilla rose to her feet, ready to get back to work. Reaching for the empty bowl, she was beaten by Uta who’d already begun to clean the table of any unnecessary additions that weren’t part of the dressmaking process. ”Uh, thank you.” The words were awkward, Kamilla beginning to feel uncomfortable with her polite facade.

”I’ve gotta go do one final chore then I’ll be back... see you soon.”

Watching the woman retrieve a small crate of something as she spoke, Kamilla opted to simply smile and wave as she watched the botanist exit through the front door of the bungalow, a soft sigh of relief escaping her lips. Socialising was more draining than she remembered.

Shrugging, the mage decided to get bank to work, gliding over to the side of the table where the dress components and sewing kit were located. ”Right. Just gotta put it together now.” A process that was simple in theory but a lot more tiring in action.
