”I dive into the future,
but I’m blinded by the sun.
I’m reborn in every moment,
so who knows what I’ll become.”

4th of Spring, 519AV

It was early morning as Kamilla quietly made her way out of the casinor’s cabin and onto the deck, not wanting to wake the young Svefra from his sleep. The two had had a rather pleasant time the day before, learning a bit about eachother, Kamilla revealing her magic to Finn and him saving her life when she’d fallen overboard. In her eyes, the Svefra was kind, friendly, pleasant and quite handsome and now that they’d gotten to know eachother, she was beginning to feel slightly bad that he had to sleep on the deck. Thankfully, it seemed to be getting warmer the closer they got to Syka, even now in the dark of the morning, the air was quite temperate.

Dressed in a short black skirt with a flowing lace tail, a white button up shirt and her usual gloves and thigh high boots, Kamilla opted to throw what what looked like a large sheet of black cloth over her shoulders just to negate the inevitable chill, or at least she assumed that things would get chilly with what she had in mind.

Long dark hair blowing in the morning breeze, Kamilla took a seat on the opposite end of the boat to the sleeping Svefra, wanting to be as far from him as possible to lessen any chance of interrupting his sleep, while also leaving a very deliberate amount of space between the edge of the boat and herself, not wanting to take another accidental dip in the ocean.

After making herself comfortable on the deck, Kamilla took a moment to simply breathe in deeply, enjoying the small of the ocean along with the gentle sounds of waves splashing against the small ship. It was still quite dark, a few remaining stars illuminating the sky, but she was sure the first rays of sunlight would appear on the horizon within half a bell or so.

The mage had woken up with an itch to practice some magic, particularly an aspect of Reimancy that she’d been eager to attempt since she’d learned of it years ago on Sahova, para-elements. She remembered watching the Warden Initiate, Keene Ward, make use of the element of ice with such ease and grace that she could only look on in awe. Now, with her newfound control of water, the para-element of ice was finally within her grasp.

Having already prepared for her attempt by taking the time to draw simple focus glyphs on both her palms before she’d left the cabin, Kamilla was ready to begin and practically jumping with excitement, internally at least.

Holding her hands a foot apart, palms pointing inwards, Kamilla closed her eyes for a moment, tapping into the inner well of djed and slowly beginning to produce a small stream of glistening lavender res from both hands. The tiny flecks of light gathering together to form two small stone sized balls of res.

Kamilla had thought about how she’d approach her attempt at creating the para-element countless times over the years, daydreamed about it too, she’d ultimately decided that she would first try and physically combine air and water. Would it work? She had absolutely no idea.

With both balls of res successfully formed, each no bigger than a small stone, Kamilla began to focus on her control over each ball, eyes closed and breathing calm as she concentrated on being able to divide her attention between each. The left ball would be water and the right air.

Bracing herself and her mind for the series of events that could possibly occur, Kamilla sent both balls of res to hover about two feet from the edge of the boat, floating along above the sea. The distance was a necessary safety precaution. While she doubted the attempted would cause a volatile revelation, it was certainly a good idea to be safe, lest she damage the boat, which would be a nightmare.

Finally, moving each of her hands inward until her palms met in the middle and willing each ball of res to follow suit, Kamilla did her best to concentrate on transmuting both halves of the now fused ball of res into their respective elements and...

Plop

The mage opened her eyes expectantly at the unimpressive sound to see absolutely nothing, whatever result she’d created had fallen into the ocean never to be seen again. She could have seen this as a negative outcome but it certainly wasn’t one, if her assumptions were correct.

Firstly, there was no violent reaction to her attempt, as expected, but now that her expectation had been proven correct, Kamilla knew that it would be safe to repeat the experiment over the boat’s deck. Secondly, the ‘plop’ sound she’d heard certainly didn’t resemble water falling into water, nor did it resemble air dispersing, so there was a good chance that she’d created ice or at least something similar. Also, in the moment she’d transmuted the elements, she’d felt something there, something new. It was almost like a faint taste of an unfamiliar food, but instead the sensation could be felt within her mind and res. Her grandmother had always preached that one’s djed could remember sensations, like muscle memory.

With her hopes higher than before, Kamilla began the experiment anew. This time, as she produced two new balls of glistening lavender res, they remained hovering nearby, slowly growing in size as more flecks dripped from the focus glyphs on get palms.

Finn awoke with a small start as he heard movement around the boat, movement he was not used to hearing at all. At sea even smallest and simplest noises could seem like the crack of a whip because it was so often very quiet and serene. The mage proved to much quieter than he would have expected which made him appreciate her consideration. He slowly rubbed the sleep out of his eyes as he lay there quietly and took in his surroundings before he moved too much. The nearby gull opened a single eye as she looked at FInn before promptly returned to sleep.

It was still dark out, he didn’t know how long he had slept but he guessed that it was far longer
than he should of slept while his ship cruised on unattended. Normally he would of slept for half hour or so at a time while he bet that tonight he now had slept half the night away. Another mistake he hoped wasn’t too noticeable but the plant had talked incessantly for a rather long time to be certain without pretty much any input from him either. That made dozing rather difficult for some time but he may of heard some rather interesting things too, if one were to believe a talkative little plant that is.

Finn sat up to look around more as he pulled his knees up to his chest in the brisk morning air so he might stay a little warmer. He wrapped his arms around his legs for the additional warmth and comfort. As he looked out he started to take note of his surroundings, the breeze had picked up a little overnight and the little vessel seemed to be moving slightly faster by the feel of it cutting through the waves. He scanned the horizon ahead of them to find his bearing and could tell without even measuring that they had drifted south from where he wanted to be, he would have to correct that shortly however they appeared to be safe for the moment.

He then turned his attention to the woman in the bow of the ship who was doing something but he wasn’t quite sure what. She stood forward and acted like she was in deep concentration, it was still rather dark out and he had trouble making out her face especially with her dark locks that blew into her face. It also appeared she had some symbols written on her palms but he couldn’t see all of them either so he really didn’t know what they were but he did figure she was practicing magic as she was forming the same little balls of goo that she had the day before for a second time.

He had no idea if whatever she practiced was dangerous to his ship or himself, let alone Kamilla especially if he were startle her out of her concentration. So he decided he would wait for a few chimes to see if she noticed his movement or not. As Syna neared and the skies started to lighten he watched the mysterious little mage and the magic that she appeared to be performing again.

Maybe a chime passed, or maybe it was two before Camira jumped up and took flight into the morning air with several beats of her large wings

thump…….. thump…...THUMP

The sudden and intense noise right next to him caused him to jump up suddenly with the bird. As he turned to watch her fly away behind them he saw it. In the wake of their own ship and bearing towards them was another ship, and it was much closer than it should be if he had been paying proper attention!

As the two balls formed, once again hovering inches apart from eachother, this time a lot closer to Kamilla than the previous two. Once both were roughly the size of a small stone, same as her previous attempt, the mage was ready to begin her second attempt, this time keeping the balls between her inward facing palms.

Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes as she focused on dividing her attention between both balls of glistening lavender res, one air and one water, it took the mage a moment to map each with its respective element. A moment later and it was time, this time Kamilla kept her eyes wide open, not wanting to miss a single detail this time.

As she willed it, both balls of res collided gently and became one before the transmutations were willed upon them.

The result was wholly unremarkable, the glistening res transmuting and falling to the boat’s deck, clattering like a stone. The sound, while fairly quiet, was made far louder by the relative silence of its surroundings, the noise seemingly disturbing Finn’s seagull companion as the loud flaps of its wings filled the air, causing Kamilla to turn in its direction.

”Finn?”

The young Svefra seemed to have woken up some time since she’d begun her little experiment, Kamilla having been completely oblivious to his attention. ”Did I wake you? I’m sorry, I tried to be as silent as I could.” She hoped she hadn’t disturbed his sleep before he’d gotten enough rest for the day ahead.

Having been distracted for a brief moment, Kamilla remembered what she’d been attempting to do before the gull has startled her.

Turning her attention to the deck, the mage searched for the object that had caused the clattering noise, finding it nearby and reaching for it. Cold. That was the first thing felt as her skin made contact with the object, lifting the object to her face to investigate. It took only a moment for a wide smile to appear on the mage’s face. Ice. She’d successfully created a tiny piece of ice. Excitement welled up within as Kamilla’s smile grew larger. Finally, the progress she’d needed to begin making her way out of the rut of failures she’d been recently.

Too entranced by her tiny ice block to notice what had caught Finn’s attention, Kamilla continued to turn the cool object over between her fingers, grinning happily. It was unremarkable of course, just some ice, but it was the fact that she’d succeeded in creating it that had the mage in high spirits. A great start to what would hopefully be a great season.

Finn watched the ship behind them, it was some distance away for now but appeared to be headed directly for them. Who were they and what did they want? Why would they be following us? The ship looked larger than his own, to far away to tell how much bigger it was just yet. However the sound of Kamilla’s voice brought him out of his own thoughts quickly enough

“Right here Kamilla” he answered as he turned to face the lady. Now that he was awake and standing he went ahead and stretched his muscles out some as sleeping on deck isn’t as comfortable as he remembered it to be. As he twisted his chin up and to the left while he tightened his back up, his neck cracked from the neck and continued down into his upper back. With the pressure relieved mostly, he felt much better as he listened.

He smiled at her next questions as he answered “Your actually surprisingly quiet and it wouldn’t be a problem even if you did wake me.” He wasn’t against an afternoon nap either, he often found them refreshing but decided it didn’t need mentioning just then.

She suddenly scoured the deck for he didn’t know what but she found it almost as quickly as she started. He watched as the joy leapt to the woman’s face, so he guessed she had been successful in something she just attempted but he had no idea what it was.

He glanced back over his shoulder to quickly determine that the other ship wasn’t an immediate threat and it would take some time to be overtaken by them if nothing changed. He didn’t recognize the type of ship nor did he think it looked like a Svefra ship he had ever seen either which concerned them. Although caution nagged at the back of his mind, he quickly decided that it could wait a few chimes before he told so she could celebrate in her own accomplishment a little if nothing else.

He turned back to see her turning the object around in her hand as she actually looked happy, so happy that he found her happiness very infectious. He started to walk towards her as he smiled at the pretty mage and asked “What do we have here now? Something appears to be going well for you this morning!”

Even as he talked with her, he fought the urge to ignore the ship behind them as he knew that would be wrong. He instead just kept a close eye on it to make sure no new surprises came his way, he normally liked surprises but usually the surprises worked in his favor and the latest one he wasn’t as sure about yet but the odds weren’t stacking into his favor.

Thankfully, the Svefra didn’t seem bothered by her disturbance, instead greeting her with the same warmth and friendliness that she’d come to expect from him over the past two days at sea. He really was a pleasant person to be around, a lot like the bard Chrysanthemum, except Finn wasn’t constantly on the verge of singing, thank the gods. In the back of her mind, she wondered if she would ever cross paths with Chrysanthemum again, while he did have a tendency to get on her nerves, the bard had been her only source of entertainment during the very long journey across Cyphrus, towards Riverfall. In fact, she’d gotten used to the bard’s constant compliments and stories, even if she wasn’t a fan of the former. She did hope he was good though. Either way, Kamilla had been enjoying their sail to Syka thus far, certainly more than she’d expected she would.

Still smiling slightly from her success as she rose to her feet, Kamilla took a step closer to the Svefra as he spoke, offering him the frigid object. ”Ice. I just learned to create it, so I suppose you could say it’s a good morning yes.” Though creating the element was only the first step in the last process of mastering it, it was definitely the most crucial. She was reminded of all the practice she’d had while trying to master earth and then air, the former having been fairly straight forward as Earth was very tangible, while the latter had been a bit more difficult to grasp initially. Regardless, both pursuits had been fruitful and Kamilla was sure she’d feel the same when it came to water and ice.

Already the mage’s thoughts were creating in a storm of ideas in her mind. Ice shouldn’t have been too difficult to make use of, it was essentially just colder, lighter stone, albeit less durable. Water on the other hand would take some practice, being shapeless like air, with the difference of having more weight. It would take some experimentation to learn to use it effectively, though as long as they were sailing peacefully across the Suvan sea, all she had was time.

Opening her mouth to say something else, Kamilla cut herself short, noticing how the Svefra kept checking behind them as if something was bothering him.

”What do you keep looking at back there?” she asked, leaning to the side in an attempt to peer around the tall young man, but having no idea what to look for. It was still quite dark and Kamilla wasn’t sure if she was searching the sky, the ocean or the horizon. Though, whatever it was, seemed to have a firm grasp on the Svefra’s attention.

He accepted the offered stone, inspected it for a moment as he rolled it around in his hand before he set the melting ice back in Kamilla’s hand. The fact he watched the entire sequence of events leading up to the ice being created left him a slightly amazed at the realization of what she had actually done. The ice was real and he held it in his hand for sure. Although the enormity of the accomplishment was likely lost on his lack of knowledge of the subject, but he was pleased because of her enthusiasm of it. He gave her a wide smile “That’s really great Kamilla. I’m happy for you! ”

Not really sure if she paid much attention to what he said or if she was lost in her own thoughts, he let his mind drift back to his next problem when the realization fell on him. Could she be a part of this? Could she have been the distraction in some game he wasn’t even aware he had been playing? How many mistakes had the young Svefra made? He didn’t even want to think about it if it was possible. He wouldn’t assume it was true, he couldn’t believe it. She could of easily done something shortly ago while he slept on deck if she had wanted to hurt him, she had just proved she was a capable woman. Time would tell but he definitely didn’t want it be like that.

As Kamilla spoke he knew he had run out of time for deliberations. He sighed as he began “I’m sorry, you seemed so happy with your ice that I wanted you to enjoy it for a chime at least”. He took a breath as he decided he couldn’t accuse her of anything, he just didn’t believe it himself. “Overnight we seemed to have picked up some company, I do not know who they are or what they want but I suspect they are following us.” He must of unconsciously blocked her view, as he hadn’t even realized it until she tried to see around him so he stepped to the outside of the ship to let her see directly behind them. Since her fall in the water, he had noticed she was careful to avoid the edge of the ship.

Off in the distance you could definitely make out a set of sails and the outline of a ship. It did appear slightly closer now and as Syna arrived they would be able to see much more of the ship. He hesitated for just a moment before he asked “Do you know or have you heard anything at all about that ship?”. Torn between how she would answer and how he wanted her to answer he allowed her a moment to take in what he saw.

Watching as Finn turned the small piece of ice over in his hands, inspecting it before handing it back with some words of congratulations, Kamilla realised that to him it must not have been a very impressive sight. However, she was unbothered, after all, the Svefra had only been introduced to Reimancy the day before, so he had no way of knowing how much of an accomplishment it was to successfully combine two elements, forming a para-element. She smiled back nonetheless, taking the ice and inspecting its diminished size before tossing it overboard with a satisfying plop as it hit the water.

While she was grateful that the young Svefra had wanted to allow her some time to revel in her achievement, she felt that his own news was far more important, in the moment. ”A ship?” She took another look this time, knowing more or less where to search and what to look for. It took a tick or two but eventually the mage’s brown eyes met with the silhouette of a ship, it was clearly bigger than theirs, though that was the most age could make out from the current distance.

Finn mentioned that the ship seemed to be following them, Kamilla’s brow raising curiously. What reason would anyone have for following another ship in the middle of the ocean? Did ships often stop alongside eachother for some company? Like two traveling caravans combining into one along a common road? Possible perhaps, but it seemed unlikely, though it was the Svefra’s next words that really confused her.

What did he mean? The odds of her having any knowledge of the indecipherable ship would be very slim, she doubted happy coincidences happened that often out on the open sea. ”Me? Why would I? You’re the Svefra... I’ve only ever been on one other ship my entire life, and that was on the other side of Mizahar.” From Zeltiva to Sahova and back, to be precise.

The confused frown on the mage’s face was hard to miss as she tried to make sense of the Svefra’s question one more time before casting the thought aside for more pressing matters. ”What are the odds that they’re just friendly?” It was a genuine question, though Finn’s behaviour had already given her the impression that it was unlikely to be a desirable situation. Adding to that, was the fact that the vessel had no visible lights, of course there were no lanterns lit on Finn’s vessel either, but then, they were just two people on a tiny boat.

”What do we do if they aren’t friendly?” The obvious solution would be to fight, though Kamilla would certainly prefer if it didn’t come to that.

Finn watched as she dropped the ice over the side and it quickly drifted behind them and into the darkness around them. He hoped he had done the proper thing with allowing her the moment.

He followed her gaze back to the ship in their wake as she looked at it for the first time. Any doubt at all that lingered was squashed by her reactions to the news and sight of the ship as relief flooded through him as he immediately started to berate himself for even thinking it. However he also knew that it would have to wait until later when they were actually safe.

As Kamilla answered his question, it seemed like it had confused her a little. Finn turned to stand next to her and look at the ship behind them, he gently leaned in and bumped her shoulder with his arm as he looked down at her with a smile. “It was just a question”.

From there Finn’s mind started working overtime as he listened and then answered her question “I really don’t know to be honest but I do not know of any trade routes to Syka and I feel it is odd that they are on our heading. With just the two of us here, I think we need to be a little careful. We should change headings to see if they are following us so we could know absolutely.” The answer was straight as he thought it, as he followed her line of thoughts himself.

“I’m sure you can guess if they aren’t friendly what will happen.” He told her her solemnly “Their ship looks larger and they probably have more people on it which is what concerns me most. With the pod we would be fine with numbers but without them….” He trailed off as he didn’t want to take the thought much further for either of theirs sakes.

He didn’t even like the thought himself and he didn’t want to dwell on it anymore. He forced it from him mind for better thoughts. “However Svefra ships are fast, we look to be smaller, and should be lighter. So with a little work and luck maybe we can just simply outrun it before we need to do anything at all.” he absently talked to her. “Might be easier with your help though, what do you think Kam?” The more he talked the more comfortable he became with the plan and thought it may work well.

Without waiting much for her answer at all, he started to make his way aft where he stopped. He closed his eyes and bowed his head before he took several deep breaths to clear his mind. Once he felt calmed he quietly murmured a prayer to Laviku for safe passage and for Kamilla’s safety. He was perfectly content with his own life in the hands of the sea god as always.

“Need to grab one thing first though” He told her before he headed into the cabin and rummaged into his cabinet to retrieve some items before he started back to the deck.

Something was definitely off about the Svefra’s question to her and although Kamilla could not place exactly what it was, it continued to bother her nonetheless. Regardless, contemplating the young man’s thoughts and words could come later, when they weren’t facing uncertainty in the form of an I identified ship with undiscovered motives.

The thought of being caught by another ship in the middle of the ocean left Kamilla more than a little concerned, Finn’s words not painting a very positive picture when it came to the odds of the other ship’s passengers having good intentions. Pirates? Other than the odd children’s story, the mage hadn’t heard much else about them. As she understood it, they were simply thieves on the ocean. Something that she’d prefer not to run into on her way to Syka.

He made mention of ‘headings’, in reference to both their ship and the unidentified one and, given the context, she assumed it meant the direction in which a ship was heading. She supposed it had never crossed Finn’s mind that most of the terms he used were foreign to her, being born to a seafaring people she completely understood. Of course she knew what would happen if the other ship and it’s crew weren’t friendly, what she’d meant by the question was what was his plan, but he had already answered that.

”That sounds pretty smart.” Changing ‘headings’ to see if they really were being followed was an idea so simple that it was genius. Perhaps it was an obvious idea to the Svefra but Kamilla knew for a fact that it was highly unlikely that she’d have ever come up with such an idea, unassisted. ”Okay, let’s do that then...”

She paused mid sentence, listening to Finn explain the difference in size and build of the two ships and how they should have the advantage when it came to speed. The news was a bit of a relief to the mage, as fighting certainly wasn’t preferred over fleeing, not when the odds weren’t in their favor for the former.

In general, the mage didn’t like the idea of being forced to fight, though she would of course, she’d just have preferred not to unless it was for an important reason like a personal goal or self defence. ”Of course I’ll help.” Despite knowing nothing about sailing, if it would keep them away from a potential threat, Kamilla was all in.

To think, she’d awoken that morning with hopes for a relaxing and positive day, even though that had been how it had begun, with her Reimancy practice. It seemed that even the vast expanse of the Suvan ocean wasn’t enough to avoid the troubles posed by other people.

Patiently awaiting instruction, Kamilla watched with a frown as Finn disappeared into the cabin, housing Yen and Roo, in order to fetch something. Considering their plan was to sail away, the mage was curious as to what the young Svefra could possible need. Surely everything needed for sailing the ship was located on the ship and not in it, but then she wasn’t a sailor, so what did she know.

Of course it was way too late before Finn realized he cut Kamilla off in the middle of her sentence but it wasn’t exactly the right time to apologize for it right yet. Although she didn’t seem to be too offended by it, he would have to try to remember to apologize later as well as being more careful in the future.

He knew that his youth and lack of experience worked against him at times so he was quite glad when she seemed so willing to listen to his ideas and suggestions. Although it was his ship and he was it’s captain making him in authority and responsible for everything but not that he liked it that way. Kamilla wasn’t his subordinate to order around and he knew that so her cooperation meant that much more to him when she agreed to help his plans. He couldn’t help but beam her a smile because of it.

As he returned to the deck with his few weapons in his hands, he stuffed one of his throwing knives into his own waistband. He gently dropped his cutlass up on the deck and away from the edge before he walked over to Kamilla and gently pressed his other throwing knfe into her hand. “I don’t have many weapons myself, never had much use for them in the past but I would prefer to have them close to hand when needed.” he told her “It also is always handy to have a sharp knife around when you need it for ropes or lines if nothing else and I have no idea if you have any of your own but hold onto this for a bit.”

Finn then went to the mast to check the sail. He reached up and grabbed the rope to the top of the sail as he unwound it form the cleat. As he took the last turns off the cleat the wind on the sail pulled the rope through his grip on the rope as it ran up the mast. The sail dropped quickly as the ship lurched from the loss of propulsion while his hands burned as he grabbed at the moving line. Finally he was able to arrest the fall of sail and started to haul it back up the mast as the ship lost speed but he ignored the pain of his palms and fingers as he slowly pulled it back up hand over hand until the ship started to slowly pick speed back up. He leaned back on the rope as he slowed down his frantic raising of the sail now that they had regained some lost speed he felt better and knew his experience wouldn’t cut it which forced him to take extra time to find a better speed for them. He pulled a couple of arm lengths at a time and then waited to see if they gained any extra speed or not before he would pull more.

“Are you ok over there, I will meet you in the back by the rudder when I’m done here?” He asked as he felt he had a minute to check on her and around again. He nodded towards the rear of the ship as he hauled another couple of arm lengths of sail up as the ship seemed to pick up slightly more speed and the gentle rhythm of the bow cutting through the waves beneath them.
