Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

51st Day of Spring, evening

Flick sat on the dock, watching the massive falls above and the gently crashing waves below. Life in Riverfall was a hurricane. Kavala and the Sanctuary had gained a purpose, a path...and Flick had made to follow it. But she found herself falling behind, seeing the world in a differant light. For what the konti did for her, what the woman meant to her, there was nothing that compared...but now she was free..the kelvic felt restless. Her deep brown eyes were troubled as she sat alone, hidden from concerned gazes. What did she want, really? Each moment in Riverfall left her remembering pain and a life lost. There was a whole world out there, and the young fox wanted to see it.

Picking up a rock from a small pile she'd collected, the fennec skipped it across the water. her long hair fell loose around her shoulders and she dressed in a light white dress, easily discarded for shifting. Looking down at the rest of her rocks, the girl sighed.

An odd stranger stood on the dock, looking out. A really unusual sight, a benshira all the way here in Riverfall. And by his looks, a mercenary too. His hand rested on the hilt of his scimitar and as he turned to look at Flick, he lifted his other hand to readjust his face covering, which hid his features.

"You a merchant?" He asked the girl. "I am mercenary, looking for work. Can work for few mizas too." He spoke in a badly accented common. He obviously wasn't used to this language. His piercing cold eyes fell on her. Those eyes of his held an almost predatory ferocity and intelligence too, despite his language skills.

To say Flick hadn't noticed the man was an understatement. As the deep, broken language voice emerged from the wraps and folds of the merc's face, the slight woman yelped and jumped to her feet. Her heart felt like it exploded in her chest and her form began to shimmer. Composing herself, the fox held it together, light fading to leave her still in human form.

"Dear Gods...I nearly had a heart attack! You can't just jump out at people like that! Petch!" Taking a deep breath, Flick looked up at the shrouded man.

"I'm not a merchant, no. But...I know a few, in the city. Maybe they'd have work for you." Old habits died hard, and with a wide winsome smile the kelvic continued talking without pause.

"Your not a local, I can tell. Have you come far? Why Riverfall? I'm sorry, I'm talking a lot. Sorry. My name is Flick, and if your looking for work, I don't think Riverfall is paying well." Stopping for a breath, she looked him over. Human? She didn't know. He was just eyes in cloth for now.

"I not intend to frighten you." The mercenary said to the girl as he removed the shroud from his face, revealling harsh, windswept features and an ugly scar running across the right side of his face, probably the reason he shrouded his face in the first place. It was an odd appearance for a young man barely in his twenties. His harsh appearance made him appear 10 years older than he actually was.

"I come from desert in Eyktol. I thought work paid better here." He spoke, struggling with the words. "Father was mercenary. I am mercenary. But mercenary work not paid good these days and... how to say... not in many demand too. Warriors make mizas hard today."

Readjusting his scimitar in its scabbard, he eyed the girl with an almost predatory gaze. "You not human. How to say... oh, yes. You kelvic?" So, there was more to this man than meets the eye. Despite his skills with language, he seemed to be at least moderately educated. An educated mercenary, not just some hired thug who can barely put together a few sentences.

Watching the man remove his shroud, Flick found herself fascinated by his face. He was scarred, and looked like he'd seen a lot in his time. A desert man...Flick hadn't seen a desert before, not a real one, but she imagined it could be hard.

"Yes, well. I suppose unless there's a big giant war going on there isn't really much work for a mercenary. Soldier. Warrior. None of the above." There was something to the tone of her voice. Flick was thinking.

Shaking her head, the blonde focused on the man again, smiling widely. His eyes seemed almost terrifying, but his words spoke of someone with an education. A brain. She liked brains.

"Yup, kelvic. I'm a fennec fox, when the moment takes me." Tucking her hair behind her ears, the fox had a crazy idea.

"Your looking for work, coin? What if...what if someone wanted an escort? Protection on their travel? How much would it cost?"

Few feet from where the kelvic and benshira are deeply engaged in their conversation, a tree stood tall and proud. A frail figure dangled from the proud tree. He was cautious not to be noticed and it seemed he was doing quite well. He had never seen a Benshira in Riverfall and his presence made Caladien suspicious of the reason behind the Benshira's presence.

He was afraid for the safety of the kelvic for although he has no interests in anyone, he always reserved a soft spot for kelvics, probably because like him, they are also different from the others. "What if he meant the poor thing harm?!" the thought flashed through his mind. He decided to keep on watching, praying for the safety of the kelvic.

"That depend on what I escort. But I not charge much. Work is hard to find as it is. High prices make even harder." The mercenary said to the kelvic girl. He raised his hand and covered his face in a shroud again, hiding his features. "I hope I not offended you with... With how I look." He spoke, a certain hint of concern in his voice. "Life hard. Much things happened."

He didn't appear to take the kelvic seriously, probably because the way she spoke. "I need to find work, soon. If you know merchants here, I would thank you if you tell me where merchants are." He said to her, a rather distant tone in his voice. This was a stranger, a drifter, who did not belong here, that much was obvious. But he appeared to intend no harm, rather minding his own business and maintaining a professional attitude, displaying a calm nature unusual to most mercenaries.

Caladien was curious, after so long into their conversation, nothing happened. He heard from the winds that Benshira aren't actually known for their calm nature and they mostly worked as mercenaries for hire. Maybe that's what this lone Benshira was doing in RiverFall, searching for business.

And he knew he was kidding himself that he thought his presence was unknown to them, at least to the professional mercenary.

"Hmm, mercenary for hire..."

He slowly descended from his tree and took a slight step towards the 2 figures not far away from him.

Flick had indeed heard the newcomer in the tree, her ears sensitive even in their human form and nose keen. Had he bounded down before when she'd been so lost in her thoughts, the kelvic would have had doublr the fright. Instead, as the man approached, she glanced between the merc and the man cautiously. The mercenary had indicated he had more interest in merchants than the idea she was brewing. Really, it was silly. As a fox, she could cover ground much quicker and less vunerable. It was more the companionship. The blond couldn't stand being alone. Still, Riverfall was now an empty shell for her.

"Well, if your really insisting, there is a bar just along the dock and to the left with a merchant that visits once a week. I'm sure he'd be interested in hiring some protection between Riverfall and where ever else he wanders." Turning her gaze to the other man, Flick tucked back her hair.

"Hello, are you looking for work too? Or to hire? My friend here is an excellent mercenary. I think." It occured to Flick she didn't know many mercs. How did you tell a good one from a bad one? Well, except if one was dead and one wasn't.
