Aponivi kept his altitude above the volcano, but the wind sheers coming from the bay were quite strong. Turrin looked at the bay and contacted Aponivi in his mind, “Why don't you fly to the lee side of the mountain.” Turrin leaned into the turn as the great bird started flap his wings. As the wind caught the underside of Aponivi's massive wings, the strong winds helped speed up their flight downward towards the mountain. Turrin watched as the snow covered peak got closer. The Endal waited for Aponivi was about five hundred feet from the glacier before he told him to turn and straighten out. Turrin noticed the wind was still at his back, so they kept flying around the mountain till he couldn't feel the wind on his back anymore. The Endal gradually started to notice there was less moisture in the air on the lee side off the mountain. Aponivi slowly started to flap his wings to keep the altitude, but the air around them was relatively calm compared to the other side of the volcano. Turrin glanced over his shoulder and said with a smile, “Lately the winds have been quite strong at summit of mountain, so I told Aponivi to fly to lee side of the mountain. It is calmer side because Skyinarta is large enough to protect us from the winds coming from Thunder Bay.” Turrin paused as he noticed a flock of geese flying below them, and said as he pointed to the flock, “I am glad you are enjoying the view, Syveris.” Turrin noticed the leaves were half way through their autumn coloring, so he patted her hands and said to her without turning around, “The valleys should be starting to change color now, so why don't you hold on tight.” Turrin leaned forward in the saddle, clamped his legs around the eagle's side, put one hand on the horn of the saddle, and the other clutched to the side of it. Turrin contacted Aponivi directly and said simply, “Lets go to the southwest valley my friend. Go!” The great bird of prey brought his wings half way to his body and the eagle started to gradually descend to the patch work colored canopy below them. Turrin hand a hard time looking up because of the wind rushing by him, but he was able to see the trees were starting to turn vibrant oranges, reds, yellow, and brown as the tree's got ready to shed their leaves for the winter. Eventually, Aponivi started to widen his wings again till he leveled out about a thousand feet over the tops of the trees. Turrin sat back and noticed that the bird was following a river heading to Thunder Bay. Turrin patted the great bird's neck and communicated with him, “Lets follow the river a little bit longer.” The wind eagle sense the Endal wanted him to fly lower, so he slightly brought his wings into his body and the bird started to descend about one hundred feet over the river. At this height, Turrin could make out the rapids in the river, but he pointed at the yellow leafed trees and said with a smile, “We have about two hours till Syna goes to sleep, so we will fly along the river a little longer.” |
