At her mentor's compliment, Edreina beamed, uncrossing and recrossing her legs. It was oddly satisfying, to earn praise from a man that was a near stranger. In any case, her smile only grew as he presented another challenge.

Touch. To manipulate a person's mind through touching them only. It was a conundrum, and she spent a fair tick thinking it over. Her mind turned it over, and then again. Perhaps the pressure of the touch? Or the way that it moved and fluctuated? Could there be a pattern in motion that caused the mind to link automatically with an emotion. Ever so slowly the thought rotated in her mind, and she started to formulate possibilities.

Thoughtfully, she took Ignotus's oddly chilled hands between her own. Slowly, she began to rub his hand between her own, a slow, simple movement. He'd been able to cause joy with a fingertip. Perhaps, she would be able to spark off his curiosity with this. She channeled her Djed, letting it flow through her skin and into his, carrying her intent.

It took considerably longer for Edreina to do anything this time; almost three ticks. An unfortunate byproduct of her inexperience. However, at the end of the day, she was still able to pique Ignotus' curiosity.

"My... You just might be a natural!" he exclaimed, "Excellent work! In fact..." His lips parted in a smile, "I think you're ready for something a little more advanced... If you're ready."
A faint subliminal nudge said yes. Bring it on.

If she answered in the positive, he'd inform her that this required them to work in tandem. If not, he'd shrug, disappointed, and say "All right. If you'd rather stick to what you know."

"A natural? Really?" The grin that split her face could be naught but contagious to most. It was a comfort to finally be a natural at something other than swimming. This would actually serve a purpose in her new world and, if this was a sign, she would be able to use it more effectively than any weapon held by flesh.

"I'm absolutely ready!" She said with such enthusiasm she nearly interrupted her teacher. It was only instinct that held the all but bouncing woman's tongue until Ignotus was finished speaking. Another challenge? It was certainly nothing to turn her nose up at!

"Working in tandem..." Her lips pursed for an instant as her mind tried to work around how two people with entirely separate minds and methods could impress the same feeling upon another. Surely, that would be far too difficult; how would they keep from muddling the subject's mind? Finally, she resolved that she had not gotten this far by relying upon what she knew and what was entirely logical. "I'm ready when you are..."

"A method for enhancing one's abilities." the Nuit explained. "Like a warm-up, or meditation." Wouldn't do to confuse her, now would it?

Upon hearing her affirmation, he flashed the Svefra an approving smile and a chirp of "Perfect!"
He wasted no time then. "To begin, I need you to look into my eyes... Good." he said, taking the Svefra's hands between his own.

"Now Edreina, I want you to relax. Completely and utterly." instructed Ignotus, tracing slow, methodical circles on the backs of her hands. "Allow all your worries, distractions, and stresses to wash away..." His voice was rich and thick with hypnotic fog. It billowed round her, soaked into her pores and misted out her breath. It seeped into her mind and dissolved the tension of her body. It trickled into her blood and lulled her into a sweet, sticky torpor. His touch sent vibrations that crumbled insecurities and nagging doubts, and left her serene and blissful. "Leave all thoughts of past or present below you."

She was floating, unburdened, unconnected to everything. All the world was falling far, far away, swallowed by Ignotus' black, dilating pupils. The pace at which he formed his circles seemed to slow to a crawl. She would, perhaps, even feel pulled towards them slightly.

"Everything that is exists in this moment, and all you want is to fall into a peace unlike any you've known before."

His words, his actions, slowly they seeped into her body, her mind. Slowly, she felt herself slowing, stilling. Like a pond without the constant drip, drip, drip of erratic, curious thought, the surface of her mind stilled and took on a glasslike look that met her eyes as they grew unfocused. All that she saw was the deep black of Ignotus' eyes as they widened and widened until she she would have feared being consumed by the endless maw were she not utterly calm. With the slowing of his fingers came her heart's slowing too.

For the first time in her life, she was not burdened by worry over herself or, more recently, Razkar.

"That's it..." murmured the sorcerer. She was close now. So very close... And when her eyes grew distant and dreamlike, Ignotus knew she was there.

"I am going to release your hands. What happens from that moment on you will recall as an exercise to soothe the mind and relax the body. When I release your hands, you will place them on the desk."

And so he did. Now, while a person in a trance is much more susceptible to a Hypnotist's spells, they are not completely at their mercy. Ignotus could not, for instance, transform Edreina into a blood drinking serial killer, or turn her against Laviku. Those ran completely counter to what she was, and as such would be handily rejected even in her compromised state. But he could do much, for an already malleable soul was now as yielding as water, and, so long as he did not try to make it do things water was not meant to do, he could easily shift it to his will.

There was now a small matter he had to decide upon; whether or not to attempt to shorten his work through obsession. In her current, suggestible state, he would only need to do so for a tick to make the effect permanent. On the other hand, the last time he used his most powerful tool, he had broken Miranda's mind. Ignotus did not want to break Edreina. She was a rare and precious diamond, and seeing her shattered was not his goal. No... Instead, he would take a longer, less risky approach. That particular technique would be employed in a less unpredictable form...

It was, in essence, the work of seasons compressed into a couple chimes. Associations. Ideas. Mental hooks cast out into an empty void.
She already viewed him as a source of knowledge and power. He did not touch that, but instead worked to link to that perception.

A seed of security, amplified one thousand fold in a featureless plane. A chain of subliminal links lashing it to the enigmatic figure before her. He was safety. The mental bliss she had so easily surrendered herself too. The utter absence of anxiety; that too was pulled to the mental construct that was her idea of Ignotus, and married to it. He was peace. The faintest undertone of awe; a much less intense application and sensation. A faint but perceivable glow, flickering occasionally into existence, then out again soon after. Slipped gingerly into the image. He was great. All transmitted through the bridge their eyes created.

Finally, cautiously, he added one last thing. While he was fast growing tired, it wouldn't do to skimp and suffer later. He gathered his Hypnotic presence into himself, and lanced one final act of conditioning into Edreina; a need to follow his orders. It was only a moment of compulsion, but a moment had long, deep-seated meanings in the poor girl's current state. It was specifically orders, of course. He would have to instruct, as opposed to request or suggest, if he wanted to take advantage of that particular aspect. But that was good for both of them. He would not have to watch his tongue quite as carefully, and she kept almost all of her free will. It was really quite clever, he felt.

Unfortunately, this cleverness also left him all but spent, so after taking a short breath, he said, "When I say 'wake', you will return to full consciousness. You will recall the peace and relaxation of the time between the release of your hands and then, but nothing else."
He then closed his eyes, took a deep breath.

"Wake."

"Wake."

The word pulled Edreina's soul from its cloudless slumber back into her eyes, returning life to them. The hypnotist's subliminal hooks were so well crafted that the Svefra noticed nothing different about him when she returned to consciousness. It was, to her as if he had always been someone she could trust, someone she looked up to and admired and trusted. Of course he had been, to some degree. But, that feeling was far more cemented than it had been before.

"What... did you need my help with?" She asked quietly, cocking her head to the side. He had said that they would need to work together but all she had done thus far was relax and wake up.

Ignotus shrugged, a grandfatherly smile on his face, "Call it a gift from one Hypnotist to another."
The wizard stifled a yawn, then. "One very tired Hypnotist to another. Come, I think we've covered more than enough material for today."

With a light tap on her her, he prompted Edreina to hop down, "Practice, especially with eye contact, is needed in the intervening time. Practice, and secrecy. A Hypnotist is only potent if their targets don't know their power. You mustn't speak of your magic, or mine." he said as they walked out the classroom, radiant red and white swaddled from the shoulder down in sleek darkness.

There was a frustrated screech, and the wizard chuckled. "Seems they finally caught him."
And so they had. As the half-crazed man screamed about the theft of his mind, Ignotus smiled, and shut the door behind him.

Notes :
A nice little instructional thread, however I'd just like to note a few things. Iggy, you mentioned the man escaping by copying the key, this would actually do nothing for him since each key is glyphed to specially respond to the doors where patients are kept. Naturally you would know, just be more careful in the future. Also, I believe you are selling Ignotus short. Iggy is a Master of Hypnotism, hypnotic trances are advanced certainly but I don't think Iggy would be overly tired after a little conditioning like that. And both of you should strive to lengthen out your posts a bit more, though that's just my two cents. :)

If you have any comments/questions/concerns about your grade please PM me and we will work something out.

Keep on writing!
