Sh'kasta
Appearance
Race: Konti
Gender: Female
Age: 32
Birthday: 19, Summer, 486 AV
Birthplace: Konti Isle
Appearance: Like all Konti women, Sh'kasta was born with pale skin and white hair. She has scale-like marks spiraling up her limbs and concentrating just above her chest. These marks stretch up onto her face and over the bridge of her nose, almost like colorful freckles. Sh'kasta is a bit more petite and fragile than the other women in her clan, a trait she inherited from her biological mother. Her blue eyes are bright in color, but there is a hint of perpetual sadness there even when she is smiling.
Due to the danger of gangs in Sunberth, Sh'kasta has learned to keep her head down and hide under cloaks and veils whenever possible for her own safety. Her color of choice is blue. Most of her clothes are some shade of blue that, when combined, is rather pleasing to look at.
(Sidenote: as of Fall 518 AV, Sh'kasta is three seasons into her pregnancy and is showing. She uses flowing nature of her cloak to hide this as best she can.)
Character Concept
Once upon a time, Sh'kasta was a cheery, naive girl ecited to take on a world she didn't fully understand. She wanted to see, explore, and thought she was indestructible, despite how easily she could bruise just walking around town. However, since arriving at the shores of Sunberth, life has beat much of the light out of her. She is far more guarded and reserved now. While she is polite to everyone, she takes special care as to exactly who she is friendly to and decides to put her trust in.
While she will never turn away a customer looking to learn his or her future, she is aware of times when her readings do not say what her audience wishes to hear. When that happens, she will be purposefully vague, and let the customer interpret what they wish. This is not done out of malace. She is a kind person at heart, which is why she wishes to spare their feelings.
When not fortune telling, Sh'kasta can be found out swimming, or acting as a sort of live-in nurse to her mentor, Mosa. She enjoys how much freedom being in the water provides her, just like being in Sunberth allows her to do as she wishes (even with the risks).
Character History
When Sh'kasta was born, it was no surprise to anyone that her mother would die not long after. The poor woman had always been frail in both mind and body, and the toll of carrying a child was too much for her. So when the child became an orphan, her adoptive mother- Otopa, was already lined up to take her in.
Otopa was a strong, confident woman, much different than the woman who had birthed Sh'kasta, and the matriarchs hoped this would help strengthen the child enough to outlive her mother's lifetime. Sh'kasta's adoptive mother and sisters were all fairly good to her and treated her like one of their own. They were all fairly good at swordwork and did their best to teach her, but unfortunately the young orphan could never quite get the hang of it. However, as hoped, the physical training did improve her constitution enough to grow into a healthy, if petite woman.
Over time, Otopa noticed that her young ward had a knack for divination, and decided to foster it. Sh'kasta was particularly gifted with the Automatic Writing technique. She would spend hours writing poems for family and friends predicting the future, while her poems were sometimes too vague for anyone but Sh'kasta to understand before the event happened, more often than not they were very accurate.
As time went on, Sh'kasta began to become restless. She could feel a powerful tugging at her heart, urging her to leave and find the purpose the Goddess, Avalis, had for her. Her sisters were against it, and even Otopa, the one with the most faith in her daughter, was hesitant. They fought for months over the subject until finally Otopa relented. She hired the akalak, Aer'wyn/Vel, as Sh'kasta's bodyguard and gave her a small dagger for basic protection.
Sh'kasta's Call led her to the lawless city of Sunberth, and eventually Mosa, who took her in as both apprentice and nurse. She enjoyed working with Mosa and came to like Sunberth, even with the danger. The woman felt almost no fear with Aer'wyn by her side.
During their time together, Sh'kasta and Aer'wyn became very close and eventually fell in love. Sometime after they confessed their love to each other, Sh'kasta became pregnant. She was going to tell Aer'wyn, however that same night, Aer'wyn's dark half-Vel decided to kill Sh'kasta. She barely escaped with her life, with many cuts and bruises. She didn't know anything about Vel, and thought Aer'wyn had gone into a rampage after hearing he was to be a father.
After that, she refused to even look at Aer'wyn, let alone speak to him, for months on end. The betrayal cut deep, and she fears he will try again.
(Sidenote: As of the beginning of Fall 618, Aer'wyn is not aware that Sh'kasta is pregnant, or that he is the father.)
