Holidays

The Vantha have a number of unique holidays that they celebrate throughout the year, and several common ones that are observed in special ways. Holidays in Avanthal often revolve around their religion and family. The importance of working together and worshiping the winter goddess Morwen is a central theme in the celebrations.

Name: Morwen’s Lights Festival
Date: On the 2nd new moon of Fall
Details: Every year, there is a night when the Aurora shines the brightest and the most beautiful. The Aurora dances with breathtaking explosions of rich colors, painting the whole city with a multitude of hues as the icestone structures refract Morwen’s Lights all over the tundra. Often, the swirling ribbons of colors form vivid moving images in the sky, a stunning form of storytelling from the goddess of winter herself. This rare event is so spectacular that the Vanthas’ neighbors in Taldera visit just to experience this event up close.

The lights display can be seen all over the city, but the best viewing spot is considered to be Mirror Lake, where the aurora is reflected on the lake’s stunningly clear surface. After the display, citizens gather around their Queen’s palace and offer a song of worship to the Goddess of Winter. All concepts of individual Holds are momentarily forgotten as the Vantha come together in front of their Queen, their voices echoing with solemn reverence all over their frozen realm. The whole ceremony lasts for about two bells, and ends with a festive meal in every family’s arvinta, where further stories about the Aurora Borealis are told.

This once a year event is Morwen’s gift to her children for working hard to survive in ingenious ways in their harsh frozen world. The Vantha, in turn, celebrates the values imparted by the goddess and her continued reign over her people.

Name: Morwens Return
Date: Spring 1rst
Details: The festival is run by Morwens Priestess. She oversees all the happens from the beginning to the end. The Icewatch Polar Bears develop individual dances and shows the way before. In the morning everyone sets up for the festival. The Winterflame hold sets up and create monsterous amounts of food for all of Avanthal. The Skyglow decorates the trees with glowing rainbow lanterns and other decorations. The Snowsong holds sings during the festival all in honour of Morwen. During the preparation they help set up booths for the food and creates the stone dancefloor. The Frostfawn hold runs sleigh rides during the festival and uses their animals to clear the snow from the area in preparation. The Iceglaze hold builds small walls and seating areas around the tower. These are used for sitting and climbing during the festival. The Coolwater hold does romantic boat rides around the bay during the festival and spends the morning before preparing their boats. The Whitevine hold helps the Priestess organize and direct each group, and during the festival helps serve and care for those that have inbibed a little too much alcohol.

During this time even those who have turned their back on their holds and taken up jobs in other holds gather with their holds to help them prepare. The party continues until midnight when a shooting star shoots through the sky alighting on Morwens palace and disappearing inside. The moment it touches the top of the palace the light glitters and shines off of the Icestone walls and buildings blinding everyone with its radiance. The party climaxes after this and people awaken around noon the next day, some in the snow some in beds not their own.

Everyone rises and begins to clean up. This is one of the rare moments when every hold mixes and Whitevines can be found cleaning boats, and Frostfawn can be found mixing drinks for the aching throats of the singers. The arrival of Morwen is the happiest moment of the year for the Vantha.
