Intermediate Role-Player Seeking Advice- "Newbie"

I just joined this website. In the past, I have role-played with friends who were involved with websites such as this one. However, I have never been affiliated with one personally. After scanning through some role-play threads, I have a new found respect for websites such as this one and the users who utilize it. I was pleasantly surprised to find a website where people actually use correct grammar and indulge in adequate-length replies.

I personally write as if I am writing a story, and kind of co-writing it with another person; we each have our own characters and portray them through our replies. I may sound ignorant, but is this typical?

I was hoping to find someone on here who could introduce me to the "Mizahar" ways. I have a couple of questions. Hopefully someone can kindheartedly answer them.
1. What is expected of me? (Literary-wise.)
2. (Sorry if this sounds ignorant.) What genre do most role-plays fall under?
3. On average, how many people engage in one role-play?
4. How quickly do most people reply, or does it depend on the person?
5. There are actually human role-plays, correct? It's not all mythical creatures, right?
6. Is there any other advice or information you can provide for me?

Thanks in advance to anyone who is kind enough to answer these questions of mine. Also, anyone else who is new here and just happened to glance at this, please introduce yourself as well! :)

Intermediate Role-Player Seeking Advice- "Newbie"

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on April 11th, 2012, 9:10 pm

Hello, happy to see a new face, and hoping you stick around. Personally, my rp style is not that different, though my biggest thing is trying to get into the head of my person I am playing.

But everyone has different rp styles, no two people will react exactly the same. I will though try to answer your questions. But just telling you know, if you asked someone else the same questions, you would likely get different answers.

1. What is expected of me? (Literary-wise.)
-Well, first of all, it depends. At the least, you need to use proper grammar, full sentences are preferred, and it is frowned upon to do one liners, or very short replies.

But the adequate length depends on what you are doing, and the circumstance. While in one situation, one paragraph is all that is needed, since maybe there is little you can do, in another, half a page would work.

As long as you are adequately explaining your circumstances, and actions, most people will be happy.

2. (Sorry if this sounds ignorant.) What genre do most role-plays fall under?
-I am not exactly sure what you mean by genre, there is one world here, that of Mizahar, and all role-plays fall within its rules and constraints.

We may have a few more rules than most, but overall it seems to work out for the best to have a unified background for rping.

In thread you can do about whatever, from making a sword, to killing someone, to drinking tea, and making flower arrangements. It all depends on were you are, what you want to do, and what skills you have/ want to work on.

3. On average, how many people engage in one role-play?
-This also varies. Personally, I dislike doing solo rp's, ones by myself, and prefer doing threads with either one or two additional people. But other people do ones with many more people, sometimes dozens of pc's can be in on one thread, though this obviously slows down the thread the more people are in it.

4. How quickly do most people reply, or does it depend on the person?
-It depends. I have seen someone, *myself* do an entire full on thread in a few hours, as both of us were on, and we replied as soon as one did.

The more average reply is going to vary though to usually from one day, to a week. But sometimes it will be more or less, it all depends on you and whomever your partner is.

5. There are actually human role-plays, correct? It's not all mythical creatures, right?
-You can pick a human as your pc, and dont have to involve monsters at all. Though I feel the other races and creatures are good at stirring things up, and make things all the more interesting.

6. Is there any other advice or information you can provide for me?
-If you need help, use the chat room. It is a great source of info, and 98% of the time, there is at least one person who can help answer questions for you, who is willing to give you links to info, or help you work things out.

It is often were I myself go when needing to name someone, as personally I am creative, but have no skill in naming things. It is also good for just talking, getting to know people, and finding active rp partners.

Happy rping, Rykanis Dakshata

-The more you know, the more you learn how little you truly know, and how much there is left to learn.

-Only when you truly understand the darkness, will you not fear it.

1. That's what I thought. No worries there, then. I've got the grammar covered. The length is fine as well. I personally prefer longer replies. I don't appreciate short, dinky little ones.

2. I realize that now. I was confused about the exact "theme" this website was about. I educated myself about it, though, and so I'm not confused any longer.

3. I didn't even know solo role-plays existed. Wouldn't that be POV (point of view) writing? Ha ha. I think, if possible, I will stick to a two or three person thread. I think any more would be confusing and tiresome.

4. I thought it would depend... I suppose it all depends on the person's schedule and how busy they are.

5. I reviewed the races and I think I'll actually go all out there and pick one other than a human.

Thanks for directing me to the chat. I've already received so much help from yourself and others. The whole aura is so friendly. :)

I appreciate the time you took to provide me with this information and to help me. You are the first person I've met on here, and it has been a pleasure. Thank you for your time.
