I would assume that to "gain the trust" of the Drykas, you basically have to join their society. No learning webbing and then spreading it to the world or anything, but if you want to run off and join the Drykas, it's possible for them to accept you.
Of course, if you want to cross Cyphrus, just use the caravan route...(the "megalith-marked grassland highways"). If you're trying to get to a specifc place..... maybe it's possible if you had a Drykas guide you? I'd ask a moderator of Cyphrus to be sure, if that's what you want to do.
2) I would say no. The eyes aren't really the limiting factor in reading; it's more about the brains speed of comprehension.
3) I do not know anything about Familiars. My reading of the Lore agrees with yours, based on this sentence:
While natural climate on Mizahar does not normally have the power to melt an Irylid altogether, except inside a volcano, fire can easily reach the Irylid's killing temperature.
So the desert won't kill it unless you light a fire at it. Still, I wouldn't recommend it, if only because I imagine being a jerk to your familiar by putting it in a weakening environment probably won't endear you to it.
4) Third person is highly preferred.
