Surrounded by the massive snowdrifts of Aventhal, a thick coat is necessary for survival. Warm and shaggy, Kaniel’s actual size is doubled by the sheer amount of fur protecting his frame from the extreme elements. The wooly undercoat is grayish in color and makes up most of his coat, essential for survival in the bitter cold. The coarser hairs of his top coat, meant for keeping out moisture, were mottled combinations of black and brown that ran down his back and sides. The darker colors were exchanged for white along his chest, legs, and belly. The markings on his face hardly set him apart from other Gray wolves, except for an oddly placed white splotch on his muzzle, giving the appearance of a glob of snow. Less noticeable in human form, Kaniels blue eyes are on the rarer side for wolves, though not unheard of.

During the warmer months of summer when insulation is not a priority, a majority of his undercoat is shed and Kaniel appears smaller in stature than in the winter. Still around three feet tall, he weighs around 140lbs and is roughly five feet in length from nose to tail. With pointy ears, bright blue eyes, massive paws, and a bushy tail Kaniel is rather attractive as far as wolves go, even if he is only average in size and stature. After all, it was his personality, not his size that made him an Alpha.

In human form, he is just as unassuming. Standing only 5’11”, Kaniel is neither slight nor bulky, his frame carrying most of its strength in his lean muscles. Preferring layers of clothes, he is similar to his real form in the fact that his appearance adds a bulk that doesn’t actually exist. Brown hair and blue eyes and olive in completion, the only thing that would strike a passerby as unusual would be the lack of pigment on the right side of nose and part of his cheek that aligns perfectly with the white spot on his muzzle.

For the most part, Kaniel’s personality is a very uncomplicated one. Life is ones pack, hunting, feeding, breeding and sleeping. Even as an adult he enjoys playing with his pack mates, as it is a way for them to reaffirm their bond and trust in one another, though Kaniel tends to be distinctly less playful and is much less tolerant of the nipping, biting pups than the rest of his pack. However, this playful side does not translate towards strangers, who only see a protective, serious Alpha. A wolf before anything else, those traits dominate any that he might have developed in the time he spent as a human. As an Alpha, he is protective and bold, a leader to the core. Fierce when those he is bent to protect are threatened, Kaniel is quick to anger but chooses to defend rather than attack. When something does rear an attack Kaniel quickly turns fierce, whether in his natural or human form, focused completely on the threat at hand. This can also be considered a weakness, his tunnel vision preventing him form noticing anything but what he considers a danger.

Still mostly wild, Kaniel slowly began to incorporate himself into the world of humans. Winter found prey scarce and the forests around Avanthal were perpetually blanketed in snow. Having chosen this as his temporary home, Kaniel realized the advantage of being around those ungainly, awkward two legged beasts. His possessive alpha behavior translated to something along the lines of a bodyguard. Sticking close to those he is set to protect, Kaniel is rather anti-social, finding it hard to let strangers into his life, unable to trust easily or quickly.

Kaniel takes life a little too seriously, finding it hard to interact with humans like he can with his wolfish pack and as a result he rarely participates in anything other than what he considers necessary to survive. But, since everything and everyone has a weakness of some kind, so does Kaniel. Food and drink happen to be his kryptonite. Though he started out skeptical of the human world, it continues to tempt him; the ease at which he could attain a meal more seductive to him than any woman. The nature of the hunt always lends to a high chance of failure and more than one night found him with an empty stomach.

ImageKaniel the puppy lived as a pet. His mother, a domesticated feline Kelvic, was a slave to an Human man and his family in Ravok. She and Kaniels father, also a domesticated feline, were to be the children’s pets. Both of his parents had bonded to the Man and his Konti slave, the mother of his children. However, when Kaniel was born it turned out that the children preferred the big furry wolf pup over the more fragile cats. Kaniel quickly found that he was treated better when he was just a pup and hardly ever took human form. It didn’t help that he hardly ever saw his mother and father, leaving him no one to explain the complexities of his unique situation.

That was until Kaniel’s fondness for biting became apparent. After only a few short months in the house hold, Kaniel started causing problems, biting the children and showing aggression towards the family. When his mother couldn’t control him, they worried that the children would loose more than fingers to the teething pup. The Man soon had Kaniel out on the streets, trying to find another to which he could bond and serve. He was just a little too young to be of any use to anyone and his mothers Master soon gave up the search, leaving Kaniel on the outside of the city gates to survive on his own.

And survive he did. Young and alone, Kaniel hardly posed any threat and was soon adopted by a small band of five gray wolves that roamed the surrounding forest. The Alpha male was older and well versed in survival but more than one of the grizzled females were on their last legs of life. Here, among his own species, was where Kaniel learned to live. Weeks passed quickly as his hunting skills improved and he was integrated further into the pack. He never changed forms now and simply thought of himself as just a wolf. It never occurred to Kaniel that he was different than the rest of his pack, as he hardly remembered his parents or the first few months of his existence.

It was in his second year of life that everything changed. There were many different packs in The Unforgiving and all of them fiercely protective of their territories. Having lost three of their number in the beginning weeks of winter, it was only Kaniel, his Alpha and the Alpha’s mate, both of whom were older and weak from lack of food. The winter had been harsh and game was rare and even harder to catch enough for three mouths when Kaniel was the only one fit enough to hunt.
Image
Desperate, the pack made the fatal mistake of wandering into another territory in persuit of an Elk. Immediately, the others were upon them, killing the Alpa and his mate within minutes. Kaniel, fleeter of foot than the older wolves and having seen what befell them, was able to outrun his attackers for a time. But they were faster than he, stronger and well fed. It was only a matter of time until they caught him.

It was only the grace of the gods and goddesses that they caught him near the roads, a horse drawn cart meandering it’s way towards Denval at the same moment. The snarls and howls made the horse rear, it’s eyes rolling as it tried to bolt as the smell of blood flooded it’s nostrils. Worried that it was a human being attacked by the wolves, the Merchant woman driving the cart foolishly drew her dagger and stepped into the woods. That could have been the death of her but instead of meeting a pack of snarling, bloodthirsty wolves she found a bloodied and naked man in his early twenties on the churned forest floor.

Kaniel had no idea that for the next few years, he would be more of a possession than an animal, passed from client to client once his job was done. As a protector of those weaker than he, Kaniel found it hard to resist the needs of those women who he ended up bonding with. Though it was one of the stipulations agreed upon when Kaniel entered into their service, the women were the ones to break the bond and send him away. And it never became any easier when it did finally happen.

They all have one thing in common: They needed protection. The Kelvic bond is not so sacred to all, and used in Kaniel's case as a binding contract rather than a bonding of love and respect.

ImageName: Janna
Age: 63
Met at: Age 2

Kaniel met Janna outside of Ravok. She was traveling back home to Denval after taking care of issues of family regarding her daughter and her husband. A merchant's wife, Janna had her cart and horse when she found a naked, bloodied Kaniel by the side of the road. It was the first time in years that he had taken human form, and Janna was unaware that he was a Kelvic. She gathered him up and nursed him back to health on the journey home.

A tentative relationship formed between the two. More than once, Janna came across trouble. Since she was an elderly woman traveling alone, she posed an easy target. It was during the first attack in which a group of men tried to relieve Janna of her horse and cart that Kaniel shifted and attacked in the woman's defense. Instead being scared by this sudden turn of events, Janna welcomed Kaniel back with open arms. The bond formed between the two when Janna officially accepted Kaniel as her guide and protector.

Kaniel, who had never entered into a bonding before, was shocked by the drive he felt to do whatever Janna needed or wanted of him. This continued until they arrived back in Denval. Back home and in the security of her husbands arms, Janna told Kaniel she had no more use of him, though she appreciated the time they had spent together.

And just like that, Kaniel was sent away. It took a while for the bond to actually break between them, but he was never quite the same after that.

ImageName: Laura
Age: 26
Time Lapsed: Three months since Janna

Laura was a resident of denial, the daughter of a fisherman. Kaniel had taken to the woods after his bond with Janna disintegrated, but he now felt the pull familiar to all Kelvics, the one that drove them find a bond.

She was alone on the shore, sorting through the catch that he father had brought home and hauled from the boat. The coyote that attacked was either half mad from hunger or rabid, but either way it took the young woman completely by surprise. Unwilling to put herself into foolish danger, but also unwilling to let her families only source of income be so easily stolen, Laura tried to make a stand against the crazed animal.

Hungry himself, having gotten used to the easy meals with Janna cause him to lose the edge on his hunting skills. That, along with the lack of any kind of Pack, had drawn Kaniel towards the overpowering stench of the fish. However, when he saw the woman under attack all thoughts of food was driven from his mind. The fight was short and surprisingly bloodless. The appearance of a snarling gray wolf by the woman's side sent the coyote running almost immediately.

Before Laura could turn on him as well, Kaniel shifted and placated her. Again, the bond was formed, though it took a few weeks of the wolf constantly shadowing the woman, her silent protector throughout the day.

Their bond lasted longer than his with Janna, almost half a year. However, this time Kaniel was a bit better prepared. Instead of entering into the bond expecting to be kept around forever, he knew that he would only be needed until Laura was married. Though the bond had been formed with those conditions in mind, Kaniel still found it hard to just walk away. Laura had to send him from her new house with her husband, asking him not to come back.

Name:Layika
Age: 18
Time Lapsed: 6 months since Laura

Though their bond had been broken, Kaniel found it hard to stay in Denval. By then he had his reputation as a bodyguard and protector, but the people had also become too familiar for his liking. They knew that he was a Kelvic man, and though he preferred to stay in his natural form it made it hard to converse with the humans who sought him out. Realizing that his new way of living was making him increasingly uncomfortable, Kaniel fled the fishing village and disappeared into the woods. Where he was going to go, even he did not know.

Though the very nature of his being drove him towards these bonds with humans and their guidance, Kaniel sorely missed being part of a pack. He missed the hunt and the companionship of those just like him. So he made his way north west through the woods avoiding any kind of road or sign of human habitation, just looking for a place to belong.

Kaniel's intentions were pure, and he had been on the scent of a medium sized pack, a couple of their females were in heat, when he found yet another woman in needs of his protections.

Her name was Laykia. She was a young half-breed whose parentage Kaniel couldn't pinpoint. When he found her, she was being waylaid by the same pack that he had been stalking. It was a clear and distinct choice given to him by the gods. He had to choose between what he wanted and what he created to be (though Kaniel knew nothing of other kelvics, understanding only that he had a desire deep within him that screamed and gnawed until he gave into it.)

Of course, his choice was made when he flew into the fray, snarling and snapping at the besieged girls side. It was pure chance that the snarls and barks of the wolves startled a flock of deer nearby, sending them into flight. Immediately noticing an easier fight and kill, the wolf pack dissolved into the shadows, leaving Kaniel and the young woman alone.

This bond lasted only until the pair reached Avanthal, where Laykia sought her half-brothers protection. Needless to say, Kaniel was cast away once again.

Name: Rhonda
Age: 56
Time Lapsed: Three weeks since Laykia, present.

Skulking on the edge of the snowy city, Kaniel was out of his element. Having spent a good portion of his three years in warmer climates, he was finding it hard to cope with his lighter coat. He had not stored up the fat and fur necessary to survive such harsh weather.

Uncomfortable as it made him, Kaniel was forced to enter into the city. At first, nothing and no one bothered him, but eventually the presence of a wolf stalking the snowy streets began to cause distress. Adding onto the discomfort he already felt, Kaniel had no choice but to change shape. The downfall: Naked, in the middle of a crowded street.

Luckily for him, Rhonda had been watching the whole ordeal. Her lover had been a Kelvic wolf as well, though Arctic of species, she had recognized Kaniel for what he was almost immediately. Taking him away from prying eyes, Rhonda welcomed Kaniel into her home.

Their bond is currently still intact, Rhonda wishing to keep Kaniel around not only for protection but because he reminds her of a love lost.

Equipment
  • 2 Sets of Clothes: 1 white collared shirt with brown slacks. 1 tattered shirt and pants set worn for when shifting may occur
  • 2 Sets of Boots: 1 nice set, 1 tattered set
  • 1 Backpack with few necessities: brush, razor, soap, money pouch

Ledger
  • 50 Miza
Note: I have chosen to start with less than the starting package recommends as it fits better with my character concept.
Second Note: From Creation up to Spring 512, Kaniel hasn't earned or spent any Miza, which explains the very small ledger.
