Physical Description

This girl is sixteen years old, energetic and curious in her jovial youth. She is somewhat short, perhaps a little more than four and a half feet tall, and somewhat light; just barely ninety pounds. Her milky white skin is pale with little life in the sun, soft and tender to the touch. Her skin is almost impeccable, with few imperfections. Under enough light, it would become quite obvious that her skin is also tinged with a slight golden radiance. She has a graceful and effeminate body, delicate yet charming form.

Midnight black, finely combed hair falls enchantingly to rest against the small of her back. Her dark and silky smooth tresses sway lightly as she walks, glancing across her back and occasionally folding over her pretty face. Under her precious bangs, her forehead often furrows adorably when she thinks. Brightening with intelligence, two lovely eyes tinted a molten gold look out from under wide oval lids. Long and dark lashes daintily trace the rounds of her cheeks when she blinks, momentarily hiding the two aureate orbs before promptly revealing them once again. Her cheeks are one of the rare locations where she still happens to hold some of her girlish baby fat. They often flush with either embarrassment or excitement, coloring her gorgeous face. At the far ends of either cheek can be seen a small and effeminate ear. They aim to catch the slightest sound, her head moving left and right to pinpoint its location. In case smell is required to discover something of interest, a miniature yet endearing button of a nose sits snugly between her extraordinary pair of eyes. Her nose is soft to the touch, placed serenely above small pinkish lips. When she smiles, she displays awfully cute dimples and two sets of straight, pearly white teeth. A smooth and effeminately curved chin finally completes her alluring face.

Wrapped about her chest is a darkly shaded leather vinati with swirling golden designs that imitate the behavior of the wind. Small straps run across each shoulder, holding the garment up and exposing a fully bare midriff. She also wears a black bryda, which reaches far down her legs and nearly wholly conceals dark leather ankle boots. The boots are tied tightly to her feet, a soft padding heard with every step. As the only jewelry on her person, slung across her neck and laying gently just above her vinati is a glass blown amulet. A black leather cord runs through the top of the pendant, the glass designed in the form of circular swirling colors, as though many blades of grass bowing to the wind.

Character Concept

Jeslyn is presently a hunter from the Avora caste, with half her bloodline originating from the Eypharions and half coming from the Inarta. Her mother Calla was an Inarta Dek, though Jeslyn was too young to remember much more than her name since they lost touch in the early years of her nursery life. She had a twin sister named Hafwin, who was executed for rescuing Jeslyn from an Endal trying to have his way with her. She knows nothing of her father; simply that he was an Eypharion. Though on occasion she was taunted for having mixed blood, more often than not she was either too busy with her own life or awed by her peers for her exquisite beauty. However, Jeslyn never felt comfortable with the looks others had for her, becoming even further anxious when those same stares led to the death of her sister. She knows nothing of the powerful pheromones her Eypharion heritage afforded her, and has no telepathic abilities. Growing up, she trained herself to be a competent archer and also learned a good deal of falconry.

She can be very brash, especially with those that give her little respect, though at times ignore the fact that she may withhold respect for others to begin with. At other moments she can also be shy, uncertain of herself and anxious for getting too close to another. Still, she has a voracious appetite for knowledge and can sometimes be seen asking so many questions as to appear to be interrogating her target of interest. She has little real experience with romance and has become further afraid of such a concept from her recently gloomy past. Nonetheless, she aspires to see the world outside the volcanic walls of Wind Reach. Though she may be in awe of the Wind Eagles and enjoys the thought of becoming a rider of such splendid creatures, she is more enthused at the potential prospect of traveling the always mysterious world of Mizahar.

Character History

Sixteen years ago, a male Eypharian Inkara visited the Inarta city of Wind Reach in order to purchase fine glass blown jewels as a gift to potential suitors, and vacation inside the intriguing city. The royal very much enjoyed his promiscuity and accumulating the sensual experiences that defined his youth. He thought to gather a number of professionally and beautifully crafted dichroic glass pendants to gift to his future concubines, perhaps even learning how to create such exceptional art during the process. While residing in the curious city within a volcano, he afforded himself greater respect from the people by assisting in hunts for food. After only a short while, he quickly learned that the higher castes of the society could actually order lesser Inarta to do as they wished. Deciding to imitate this privilege himself, he took notice of a Dek woman named Calla that was pleasing to the eye. Commanding the woman, she was made to share a bed with him for a number of nights during his stay at the city. Once his short holiday was complete, he left Wind Reach with glass jewels in hand and nary a thought for the woman he took as a temporary bed warmer for much of his visit.

That same Dek woman eventually found herself pregnant, soon giving birth to twin girls. The eldest by a minute was named Hafwin, and the youngest Jeslyn. Both had midnight black hair, golden eyes, lightly gilded skin, and a shorter than average stature. They were both exceedingly beautiful, yet with traits considered negative in the hierarchical society of Wind Reach. For this, they were both destined for difficulty with being accepted and elevated to any higher a caste than a commoner. Growing up, the twins were raised in a nursery overseen by commoners, their mother far too busy to pay much heed to her children as she conducted the limitless tasks that were expected of her, visiting less and less as the years went by. Instead, Hafwin and Jeslyn spent their time with other yasi, fast finding themselves with differing outlooks. The children not yet old enough to comprehend the intolerance most Inarta adults have for mixed-blood citizens, many came to admire the twins. Hafwin basked in the attention, while Jeslyn discovered discomfort with it. At a young age, Jeslyn often attempted to draw away from the crowd, preferring to find other pursuits rather than the admiration of other children. Instead, she shortly involved herself with a number of rebellious children, happy and eager to think up new and mischievous plots against the overseeing commoners. Perhaps one day they might draw figures on the walls with stolen quills and ink pots while during another they might mix curious ingredients in a supervisor’s meal. Of course, these pranks often caused the rebellious children various minor punishments in order to teach them such conduct is wrong. However, more often than not the punishments were thought by the children as a failure to be secretive and a reason to try harder next time around. Hafwin on the other hand would often collect as many children around her as possible, even enjoying moments when she could show off to the adults. During the twins sixth birthday, they were both gifted with their own blue jays, ecstatic at the opportunity to raise such an amazing creature. Hafwin loved teaching her bird new tricks, no matter how many times her endeavors failed. She cared for it and gallivanted about the nursery with it to the admiration of both children and supervisors. Though Jeslyn was much more modest with the care of her bird, she did indeed love the creature immensely, taking it with her wherever she went and treating it the best she could. Where Hafwin would decorate her bird and keep it in a cage when not holding it, Jeslyn never used a cage but rather preferred to keep the blue jay close all the time. There were few places the bird could go in the nursery, and whenever it left her side it always returned to her soon after. Besides the difference in the appearance of their respective pets, Hafwin and Jeslyn could easily be distinguished from one another even though they were technically identical. Hafwin always found new ways to ornament herself with whatever pretty object she could acquire, changing the style of her hair all the time as well as simply acting with a sense of haughtiness. It was rare for Jeslyn to be unblemished with various and random scrapes or bruises. Additionally, depending on her mood and the current state of affairs, she might act soft spoken or wield a harsh tongue. What’s more, Jeslyn nearly constantly asked as many questions as possible, whereas Hafwin was often surrounded by abundant friends. No matter the difference in cliques or personality, the twins were indeed quite close. Jeslyn was often the brasher of the two while Hafwin more controlling. Throughout their childhood in the nursery, the twins always slept in nearby cots, telling the other about their day and talking about anything that came to mind before they went to sleep. On rare occasions Jeslyn even showed off with her sister, or Hafwin went on mischievous excursions. Yet the carefree time in the nursery ultimately ended as the twins left to live within the youth section of Wind Reach and focus greatly upon the studies that will optimistically lead them to a high caste.

Growing up in the youth section of Wind Reach was uncomfortable at best for a while as the twins attempted to become accustomed with the different living conditions; they always had a supervisor nearby constantly overseeing every action, and children on all sides to play with. Instead, Hafwin and Jeslyn lost touch with their friends as they left the nursery, expected to become truly independent individuals. In an effort to make the two as self-sufficient as possible before they began their adult lives, the twins were sent to live in yasiry greatly separated by distance. To make matters worse, Jeslyn lost her blue jay during the journey towards her new home. The crowds of people obstructing her from her destination were too great, and by the time she reached her new living quarters she realized her blue jay was no longer perched on her shoulder. Jeslyn quickly became lonely without her rebellious gang by her side or her loving sister to talk to every night, not to mention the loss of her dear pet. Still, as time went on and she was required to devote her attention towards academics and various Bendi, she shortly was too busy to be lonely. Through learning her academics and gaining further knowledge of the life around her, she discovered a great interest in attaining more information on anything and everything. She studied all she could of Wind Reach, even finding out first-hand how to accomplish numerous different tasks during her Bendi assignments. Each task she was made to complete was exciting to her, thrilled at the prospect of experiencing another profession ten days after the first. After seeing the wonders of the Wind Eagles and awed by their presence, much of her time was spent either learning how to treat such birds or practicing with a bow so that she might benefit a future hunt. Though she found difficulty understanding the complexities of birds, she had a knack with the bow and arrow. She had never seen a Wind Eagle during her life in the nursery up close, yet every time she was graced with a Bendi assignment that revolved around the creatures, she was spurred to study and train even more. Years went by faster than her animated lifestyle allowed her to notice. During this time, she did not meet many new friends, yet she enjoyed herself too much to notice.

One winter when she was thirteen years old, she encountered an old friend from the nursery that was a member of her rebellious gang, a tall boy named Tavor. They spoke for a long while, catching up with the time that was lost, when he hinted at an intriguing plot of mischief. Pressing him into telling her more, he eventually explained that he planned to sneak into the Aeries and plant some glass blown jewels within an Endal’s home for his birthday with a collection of other children. As her old friend got to talking about it, he opened up further on all the details. By the end of his telling, he was enthused to invite Jeslyn along with him. She was reticent to follow along, yet after some convincing and reassurances that it was all in good fun and just like old times, she reluctantly agreed to join him. Tavor was overjoyed at the announcement, and even offered to cook a meal for Jeslyn at the communal kitchens before they went on their excursion. Speaking about all facets of their lives during the meal, Jeslyn slowly relaxed from her uncertainty in joining the boy, simply thrilled to be a part of another adventure. After the dinner, they met up with three of the boys friends outside the entrance to the Aeries. After one of the friends declared the route towards the home was empty in a quick scouting mission, they rushed up to the Endal’s home before any Wind Eagle might spot them, hoping the darkness of night would hide their appearance. While a second child was lookout at the entrance to the Endal’s cave, the other children continued on. They snuck into the place as quietly as they could, looking this way and that for any potential dangers. Suddenly, a falcon flew down from a perch about the ceiling, attacking the third boy in an effort to protect its owners’ home. The third boy was dull of mind, only thinking to save himself as he began to grapple with the bird. He managed to grasp it in a tight hold with both arms, hoping to quiet it in his grip. The children all heard a terrible snap as the falcon abruptly went limp. Frightened by what the boy did, the falcon was dropped to the floor and they forgot all about their mission. Every one of the five children hurried to leave the cave with a pale-faced rapidity. Jeslyn was last through the exit, running quickly to escape potential trouble. A nearby Endal saw the kids dashing from the home, and a falcon lying motionless within the cave. Being only one man, he was only capable of running down a single child, and the tail of the five was closest for capture. Jeslyn was tackled to the ground by the man, the other four children too scared to realize one of them was taken. As she watched her old friend disappear into the distance and shouted for help, none ever looked back. The man forced her to her feet and taken into the man’s Aerie. As it happened, the very Aerie the children planned to sneak into was the home of the Endal that had Jeslyn gripped by the back of her neck. He interrogated her, trying to understand what happened while barely containing his anger. Jeslyn began sobbing profusely, horrified and regretting her choice to come along extensively. Still, she never spoke her Tavor’s name, hiding the identity of her friend even if he left her during his escape. After some consideration, it was deemed that the man would paddle her for her apparent crime, too soft to flay the flesh from a young child. Jeslyn was in pain for dozens of days before her bruises slowly faded. As an additional reprimand, he commanded that she spend some of the time she had to herself working for him.

For about a year after the incident that caused her to meet that mysterious Endal, she worked for the man whenever time permitted. His name was Dugal, and he was often very strict, giving her assignments from cleaning the Aerie to even caring for a few of his additional pet birds, yet always expecting a perfect completion of her tasks. Still, as time passed the man began to command her towards more useful jobs, ones in which simply helped Jeslyn succeed. Dugal might order her to practice her archery, or have her learn the behavior of various hunted animals. He afforded her more time to care for his pet birds, rather than clean the messes that normally only Drudges are known to do. Another year passed them by, with Jeslyn even allowed on a few hunting missions as a second seated rider. During the two years that Jeslyn stayed with Dugal, the man began to admire her greatly. Upon three particular days across the span of every season almost without fail, he stared at her while she completed tasks in an unnerving way. The first time he rested a hand on her shoulder and thanked her for taking care of his pet birds was the day he became less strict with what commands he gave her. Gradually, Dugal commanded her to various tasks less and less, until he let her come and go from his Aerie as she pleased. Two and a half years after the accident in the man’s home, Jeslyn encountered Dugal at the Inner Warrens. They spoke for a short while, but as they continued to converse, Dugal’s expression was drawn into that unsettling gaze as before. He mumbled something suddenly about not being capable of resisting any more, and then promptly clasped Jeslyn’s hand in his own. Jeslyn was wary and confused by the touch, softly asking him to remove his hand from her with the anxiety of angering the strict man. Yet he gripped even harder, causing Jeslyn some distress and even greater confusion. He started inching closer towards her than before, and quickly attempted to press her against the nearby wall. Jeslyn slid away from him, only to be shoved to the ground and straddled on the floor. Jeslyn shouted and resisted, pushing him away. As the event continued without any others either noticing the encounter or interfering, she truly started to struggle. She scraped and screamed at him while he tried holding her down, Dugal quickly becoming more violent. She kicked and pleaded for him to stop, crying out for help and defending herself with all she could. Suddenly, Jeslyn could see nothing but crimson pouring across her face. Above her and Dugal, a familiar woman held a knife in a tight grip, the point reaching past the back of the man’s neck to stick out from his throat. Recognizing her as her long-lost twin sister, she watched as Hafwin killed the man that was assaulting her. The gathered crowd of nervous and mesmerized onlookers bolted into action only then, to grapple with Hafwin and disarm her of the knife. They dragged her away into the distance, with Jeslyn lying upon the floor in disarray and total shock.

Jeslyn followed the crowd to what passed for Wind Reach’s jail, stunned at recent events and barely capable of comprehending the situation. Seeing her sister thrown immediately into the Valintar’s jail and barring the entrance of any to visit her at that moment, Jeslyn could do nothing but stare blankly at the walls that made up the prison and wait. Drifting off to sleep many bells later on the ground outside, she was woken up not much later by a guard. He told her he would allow her in to speak with her sister in a few days time, and the decision with what to do with her would be made shortly afterward. Hungry and exhausted, she returned to her yasiry and anxiously awaited news. True to his word, the guard eventually came to her home and brought her to the prison. Jeslyn spoke with Hafwin, grieving for what happened and talking with her in the short amount of time that she was allowed. Hafwin gave Jeslyn her favorite personally crafted glass blown pendant in case the worst occurs, and then they both said their sorrowful farewells. Jeslyn was promptly reminded that the time allotted was up, walking back to her yasiry and crying through the night. It was decided that the Yasi named Hafwin would be whipped harshly for her crimes only the next day. Jeslyn made herself attend the brutal punishment, drearily watching the horrible proceedings. Hafwin was whipped fiercely by the one chosen to punish her, the lashes beating against her tender skin relentlessly. Though it appeared unintentional, the callous whipping was followed by a severe loss of blood, a physician realizing that Hafwin was unable to survive the onslaught. After the morbid event, she wandered back to her home once more in a dull state of shock. She spent many dozens of days at home, not wishing to attend her Bendi assignments nor the classes that comprised of half her day. When the time came to decide which caste to place her in however, she was decided to be an Avora. Known for her skill with a bow, her connection to an Endal, and her knowledge of hunted animals, she was thought to be a good choice for a hunter. Only when there was conversation of overturning that decision did she finally leave the yasiry to attend to her responsibilities. She moved into Darniva Commonrooms, living as a hunter and second seat to any rider that would have her, though the knowledge of what occurred to her and Dugal either brings pity or anger from most. Midsummer became the middle of autumn, yet the wounds of her recent past still haunt her and nothing has yet to truly break her from her reverie.

Jeslyn's Abode

Image

Within the sprawling corridors of Darniva Commons, one might encounter an unassuming wooden door. The door appears quite new, healthy wood polished to a shine, with only a simple bronze door knocker and keyhole adorning the entrance. More often than not, the lever is locked shut, barring any from accessing the room beyond. However, those that pass such a barrier will find themselves encountering a somewhat haphazard space. The slightly rectangular room is built with the masonry that much of Darniva Commons is comprised of, yet the area is quite spacious. Indeed, a short walk would be required to travel from one wall to its opposite twin.

In the far left corner upon arriving in the quarters sits a finely crafted bed fit for one inhabitant. The bed is just as new and simplistic as the door, with white blankets and sheets scattered messily about the mattress, and a chamber pot dwelling beneath. To the foot of the bed is set a wash basin, often filled to brimming by a servile Dek. In the far right corner of the room stands a basic practice dummy, though composed of little more than two crossed pieces of wood. This wood however is pockmarked with numerous scratches and indentations. Isolated to the rightmost wall lies an expansive wooden chest, a simplistic lock lying uselessly beside it. Lounging upon the chest can be found two slightly crumpled maps, one revealing locations within Wind Reach and the other of Kalea. All the occupants’ belongings currently not in use are stored neatly within, in spite of any potential disarray that may surround it.

Directly to the right of the doorway is positioned a well-made desk, though the surface is enveloped by a variety of academic paraphernalia, stains, and a half-used candlestick. Dried ink blotches mar the desk’s surface, which are greatly hidden by the collection of books stacked atop it, a nearly dry quill momentarily resting over it, and a heap of variously used parchments covering up the rest. The bottom book outlines information about the animals which stalk the grounds just outside of Wind Reach. The middle book explains the intricacies of falconry, and the top book details methods of successfully hunting ones prey. A small wooden bookcase stands pointlessly beside the desk, gathering dust and gradually becoming the home of a resident spider. Lastly, a plain yet sturdy chair sits before the desk, creaking ever so softly whenever a person reclines in it.
