[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Cinnamon Rolls!

Image

That's right folks. We're bringing the Bakeoff's Back. They were gone for a while because we didn't have time to keep up with them and another person decided to take them over and then got busy with her irl too... so now they are back. What you do is simple... each month we'll have a challenge and everyone gets to meet the challenge for a fork medal. Five forks gives you a power spork. Post your Cinnamon Roll pictures - with some of the process involved - and then the recipe if your willing to share. We get to eat the cinnamon goodness as bakers while the rest of the game gets to drool. You have all month to post pics and get the baking project done. Nov 1st will announce another project (probably something pumpkin) so we all can enjoy too!

[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Postby Xalet on October 18th, 2011, 2:30 am

All right, lets do this. This is Akalak Purple Coffee Maple Cinnamon Rolls. That's right, it's made with coffee, because that's what Akalak's like to eat. I decided that. I'm way too lazy to put down the recipe, but here's a picture of all of the ingredients.

Secret :
Image

Oh yeah, great value. I'm cheap.

Ok, moving on, the first thing I had to do was combine the stuff to make the filling for the rolls:

Secret :
Image

Next came the dough for the actual rolls themselves:

Secret :
Image

So then I had to sprinkle the filling on top of the dough and start rolling it:

Secret :

All cut and baked:

Here's the purple Akalak frosting. Ok so it's more like a greyish purple, but I tried:

Akalak's need plenty of frosting on that sucker:

Time to enjoy!:

And that's that. The frosting is interesting alright, that's the part that got the coffee and maple flavoring put into it. I will say though, it came out pretty good. My wife agrees, she was my taste tester and photographer since my hands were covered with cinnamon roll goo most of the time.

[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Postby Aidara on October 25th, 2011, 7:56 am

Little Pieces of AWESOME
MmmmmmmmMMMMmmmmMMMMmmmmh

I have to say that I went into this thinking that it was going to be super easy. Dough + Sugar + Cinnamon = easy, right? Wrong.

I've never made dough from scratch before. Well, I have, but it was so long ago that I can hardly remember what went on. That was the most challenging part for me. I had a mini freak out half way through when I didn't think the dough was rising, lifting the lid like every five minutes to see if there was a difference. And then when it had risen a bit, I had no idea if it was doubled in size.

Anyway, I don't remember what recipe I used. I threw it out already because the instructions were horribly convoluted and hard to follow.

The Ingredients :
Of course, it took forever to find everything I needed since I have NO idea where any of the baking supplies are in this house. I am the only one that bakes.

Oh, and we can't forget my trusty sidekick and helper for the night, Princess! ( I promise there was no cat hairs in the final product )
Image

Everything Else :
Action shot of the cinnamon sugar mix.

Image

Yeast and Sugar. I actually had to call my mom and ask her wtf I was supposed to do at this point because the recipe didn't tell me, and I've never to my knowledge used yeast before.

Image

Kneeded the dough for 8 minutes

Image

Set to Rise

Image

This was supposed to be rectangular. But that totally didn't happen.

Image

Add cinnamon and sugar...At this point I started to get scared again that I was doing it wrong.

Image

I totally didn't roll it tightly enough, so I had to ask for assistance in this next part. I couldn't cut the damn thing without it falling apart.

Image

Ian enjoyed his little baking lesson.

Image

Covered in butter and sugar and ready to go! Look how yummy and unhealthy!

Image

20-30 minutes later, after letting rise again for another 40 minutes

Image

....And, I left Ian in charge of the icing. This is what I came back too.

Image

Since Cinnamon rolls are Ian's favorite baked good in the whole entire world, I had him rate them. He gives them an A- and claims I should have added more cinnamon. But all in all...they were absolutely delicious. I had two. And it was at 11pm. >.>

Challenge Completed Results Follow

Let me first start this out by saying that this is my first time baking anything...Anything at all. Especially where I made my own dough and all. But I have seen my wife do it many times because she loves to bake. So I think I understood it pretty well...

And I think Aidara and I had the same recipe because mine sucked too...

Stuff :
Image
As you can see it didn't require much in ingredients to make...oh how misleading that was.

heating milk :
Image
Had to heat the milk so I did it in my microwave...dugh

makin filling :
Image
Said I had to creme all the ingredients together...I don't know what that is so I skipped that part.

Making Dough :
Image
This part was easy...until I mixed everything together and then realized I forgot the eggs...So I mixed them in and it worked.

Dough Ball :
Image
Yeah there was a TON of dough...

dough rolling :
Image
Now I added nuts to mine...walnuts. I figured it would be cool.

in oven :
Image
Moment of truth.....

Done :
Well now don't they look pretty. One is missing, because I ate it before taking the picture.

[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Postby Carsten on October 25th, 2011, 4:13 pm

I thought I would join this competition, because I make some mean cinnamon buns. Buns are really the only thing I can bake, though.

Anyway, I started with the ingredients:

Secret :
125 gram (0.26 pounds) butter
0.5 litres milk
50 gram (0.11 pounds) yeast
125 gram (0.26 pounds) sugar
900 gram (1.2 pounds) wheat flour
Sugar
Cinnamon:

I melted the butter and mixed it with the milk. Then I put all the dry ingredients together in a bowl, and mixed it. I got a really nice dough:

Secret :
Image
Then I let it stay for about an hour, to let the dough rise. I got this result:

Image

Then I rolled it out and melted butter, and painted the dough with butter before adding cinnamon and suger on it. On one side I had water.

Secret :
Image I apologize for the quality of the picture, I was tired and I my hands were shaky.

Then I rolled them together and cut them up, and allowed them to rise for another 20 min, before putting them in the oven at 220 degrees Celsius (437 degrees Fahrenheit)
I'm not too happy about the shape of all of them, but most were good, IMO.

Secret :

And then they are ready to be served. I can add that they were very well received by my family.

[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Postby Gossamer on October 25th, 2011, 5:20 pm

These all look so good. I can't wait to make mine this weekend too. It looks like some of you are great bakers and some of you not so great bakers are doing fabulously anyhow. The one thing I'd remind everyone is that after you roll and slice your rolls you need to let them rise once more before you bake them! Also.. in the immortal words of Cayenne - You can never have enough cinnamon!

[OCTOBER'S BAKEOFF] The Cinnamon Roll Challenge

Postby Malia on October 29th, 2011, 4:22 pm

Beware, this is a big first for me... I never did cinnamon buns and I never worked with yeast before. But I do think they turned out pretty well for a first. Here's the evidence:

Before :
The materials (also, a lesson in German if you try to read the labels). The sheet to the right is the recipe I copied from the internet.

Image

Process :
Flour and various other ingredients thrown together to the right and molten butter to the left (obviously).

Image

A before/after image. Left is the dough before and right after resting.

Image

A lot of butter, cinnamon, sugar and ground almonds.

Image

Result :
Tastes delicious! Seems like I'll spend the rest of the weekend and the next week munching away at those things. But that's no problem!
