[Flashback] Young and Foolish (Ainyi and Zenai)

Season of Summer, Day 24, 505 AV

Zenai has been living in Wind Reach for about a year now. Having failed to become a Syliran Knight, he has come back to Wind Reach and tried to be a useful member of society. He has been slowly been developing his skills at archery, hunting and wilderness survival to better facilitate the needs of his people and to make himself a place in Inarta society. Though he has been warned that he should not go out hunting without an experienced hunter, Zenai would usually lie and say he would not do it again. He would then leave Wind Reach to hunt on the following day. Maybe the elders are just being cranky and grumpy or that Zenai was just being young and foolish; Zenai thinks it the former since he has been going our regular on his horse to hunt game. He is after all old enough to have the skills necessary to fend for himself; he knew some swordplay and archery as well as he has his trusty animal companions, Stryker the horse and Vicky the magpie to accompany him and keep him out of trouble. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Zenai was a loner who doesn’t want friends. In fact, he has been trying to gain some human companionship with respectable success. One day, he met with a particular girl that he had his eyes on. Long story short, they became friends and decided to go off hunting on their own. Zenai appreciated having human company.

Zenai, ever overconfident, has rode out farther where, Zenai had heard, game would be plentiful and fat. Plentiful and fat prey means easy and slow targets for Zenai to hunt. So far, Zenai only had been able to catch small prey such as rabbits while he only had deer once in a season or even within two seasons. Zenai was confident that with his skills combined with that of his friend would be enough for them to challenge an experienced hunter. Ainyi was her name; an Inarta Yasi like Zenai. She’s a mean girl; often making fun of Zenai as if she got a beef with him. What’s her deal, Zenai always wondered. Girls are an enigma; so mysterious and random that there’s no single book in existence that can fully comprehend what, who, how and why of a girl. It doesn’t matter whether they come from Syliras or Wind Reach; girls are just random entities of randomness. Still, she was willing to Zenai a few tips in archery and they would often practice together. Zenai may have made in-roads by inviting her to come and hunt with him. She has accepted it and Zenai assumed she wanted to prove that she was the better archer and hunter.

They got together their hunting and camping gear for their three-day hunting trip. Tents, flints, water flask and bedrolls were some of the items they brought to establish their campsite. Their hunting gear was their bows and talon swords. Zenai grinned and puffed his chest when he had two talon swords compared to Ainyi’s one talon sword. He was pretty sure she was going to stab him during the hunting trip to get his swords. Zenai had favored a composite short bow while Ainyi had her long bow. Short bows would normally pale in comparison to long bows in terms of range and power. However, the short bows come into their own in terms of rate of fire and ease of us when riding a horse. During his days as a squire, he would train in the use of a composite short bow on horseback in lieu lances that were overly favored by most knights. They rode out of Wind Reach just before sunrise. It would take an entire day for them to get to wherever they want to go and he would certainly want to avoid the disapproved gaze of the elders. They stick to the dirt roads before heading through the grasslands and forest.

They arrived at where Zenai assumed would be the “Hunting Ground of Milk and Honey” just before sunset and made camp on a hill at the edge of the forest. Zenai had volunteered to set up the tent while he expected Ainyi to get a warm and cozy fire started. Though it was summer, the nights would be still chilly and the fire would keep the wild animals at bay. Fire was one of the reasons mankind and the other mortal races were able to conquer Mizahar. Zenai let his horse grazed on the grass hills very near to their campsite. Stryker was probably exhausted and would want to a chance to eat some grass to replenish his strength. Zenai and Ainyi also brought out their rations to fill their bellies; some dried meats and biscuits. He saved the meat jerky for later and munched on the biscuits while taking sips from his water flask to keep his mouth from being dry and choking on the biscuits. Zenai decided to open up to Ainyi, telling her his days as a page and squire. He would talk about his Patron-Knights who had taken on Zenai as their squire and trained him in the ways of the Syliran Knight; horse, lance and honor. Whether Ainyi had chosen to open up to Zenai, it didn’t matter; he wanted to talk himself to sleep.

They got up just after sunrise on the following day. Zenai woke up with a messy hair and a nest that Vicky had made as her own bedroll. He did his morning stretches to fend off the drowsiness and to awake his muscles and bones for the long day ahead of them. From head to toe, Zenai twist and twirl his joints as well as flex and stretch his muscles. He does this for half a bell; none should look down on the importance of getting yourself and your body ready for the physical exertion to come. Having done his exercises and satisfied that his body is ready, he went down to the nearby river to refill their water flasks but keeping an eye for would-be predators such as bears or wolves. He brought one of talon swords with him just in case. When at the river, Zenai refills the flasks first before washing up and taking a few sips of water to hydrate himself for when the sun is out and bearing down on them with light and heat. Back at the campsite, he would get ready for the hunt; putting on his weapon harness and making sure his weapons are in tip top shape. Ready for the day’s hunt, he turned to Ainyi, “Are you ready, Ainyi? I’m certainly am.”

Teal is when everybody else is speaking.
Red is when I'm speaking Nari.

[Flashback] Young and Foolish (Ainyi and Zenai)

Postby Ainyi on November 18th, 2011, 11:14 pm

Boys are stupid.

Ainyi thought this once very clearly, very definitely about all men and boys alike. She came to this conclusion when she was thirteen, and she saw a group of boys holding a tantrum because they wouldn't get what they want. She found it silly that they didn't try asking nicer later, and thus cam to the conclusion that boys were stupid.

Five years later, she still believed boys were stupid for the most part. Though there was this one boy; Zenai. He was only a half-blood, but still new to Wind Reach. At first, she curled her nose at him many times; he had such fine clothes, such fine weapons, and not half the sense of how to use them yet. It wasn't as though she didn't have a privilege here or there, seeing how her mother was an Avora of the Glassworkers, she had to work for every item she owned. It made her tough, and proud, and judgmental of many who didn't work as hard as she did that received the same or more. But this one seemed nice enough; perhaps he was still stupid, and she would tell him so, but he wanted to learn. Best not to let such fine swords go to waste, aye? In plus, it took more strength and precision to use a longbow, and while she wasn't the greatest at it, she was better than him. And that's all she needed to be at the time.

So naturally, when he asked her to go hunting with him, she saw no reason why not to. The elders were elders, and if they knew, they would chastise them for being young and foolish. But if so, then they would be young and foolish in a young and foolish race of people where elders were so rare any that lasted long enough became sacred. In plus; whether she would admit it to herself or not, she felt some concern for the boy's safety. And if he was going to be a stupid boy, then she might as well be there to keep his stupidity from anything grave.

What surprised her was that evening. Not that it should of; Ainyi is simply particularly thick at this point. She didn't talk to many people outside of her fledgling falcon Braghna and her family. But suddenly, he was talking in this sleep-inducing haze about his time in Syliran squirehood. Love, duty, honor; it seemed so strange to her. It felt almost as though the only honor one had was the honor to one's reputation. It made her think of the world bigger than Wind Reach, and stare at the sky for a while. In a way, she almost pitied him now. To be rejected from one world, and still try to find footing so late in another. Though she waited to hear his breathing go steady and voice silent before she looked down with the softened gaze.

Ainyi's wild mane of mahogany hair was streamed behind her head like a banner when she woke; as she stretched, and rolled over herself till her wrists sat over her toes, waves of hair brushing the small of her back. She had little to say in the morning; she often did. As Zenai did his eccentric exercises, she brushed her hair out and set about placing it in three braids, held in place by glass beads, before then braiding them further until she had a woven mass of hair pleated down between her shoulder blades. She did a number of limbering stretches, and ate some, but more importantly, she put herself in the mindset of the hunt. She did a warm up with her talon sword, keeping it sheathed, that seemed almost like a slow motion dance with it's fluidity of movement. She finished as the sun kissed the low-lying branches of the trees, and Zenai returned with water, checking his weapons over again. She couldn't help a small laugh. The boy loved his weapons more than his companion almost.

“Are you ready, Ainyi? I’m certainly am.”

The inartan girl arched her brow at him, strapping her sword to her back, and sheathing her arrows in a hip-quiver. "Are you sure? It only took half the morning for you to do as much as get water, Sir." She had taken to calling him that a while ago, to tease him about what he once was. She figured it would keep him humble at the time.

"Ready, I am. Though we ought to do our hunt today by foot, methinks. Taking horses will alert predators, and the noise will scare our prey."

She thought to have some fun with this one now. He was standing about ten feet or so to her left side. She spun out of nowhere and feinted drawing her sword, hoping to spook him a little with a wry grin. "Still sure you're ready, Sir?" The nickname rolled off her tongue in an odd, airy way; she hadn't bothered much with the Common language yet.
The gorgeous boxcode above was made by the lovely Edreina.

[Flashback] Young and Foolish (Ainyi and Zenai)

“Apologies. I should have spoken in Nari.” Zenai said in a weird accent but the word he has said should be understandable and simple enough to be said and heard properly by Zenai and Ainyi respectively. Though he has lived in Wind Reach for about a year, he is still getting to know and feel of his mother tongue. He would speak a smattering mix of Common and Nari; a mixed language that people seemed to frown upon and laugh at. Zenai thought it was interesting to mix words from two languages but have kept it to himself for now so people will take him seriously. Ainy repeated Zenai’s question as if mocking him. She then proceeded to berate him for taking too long a time to get water. “By Kelwyn’s mercy, will she give it a rest already?!” Zenai wanted to give her a piece of his mind but he thought otherwise so he just took it and shrugged it off. Zenai was also sure she was saying “ser” the wrong way; it is if as it she was using an “i” instead of an “e” but again, he lets it go and let her make a fool of herself. Zenai was raised an inquisitive eyebrow when she suddenly draw her sword at Zenai’s direction. He looked back as if something was coming up from behind him. “I see nothing behind me, sera.” Zenai used Ainyi’s own mockery against her i.e. she wasn’t much of a “sera” to begin with anyway. “Let us begin the hunt. I agree that we should hunt while walking.” Zenai was pretty sure he was using the wrong term but he just wanted to get the message across. He would just need to bear with her teases. "But we should clean the camp first."

Zenai then cleaned up their campsite a bit more thus leaving nothing for bear or wolves to pick over. It was his squire in him that he insists that he tidied the camp before going off their hunt. He rolled up his bedroll, and tied it up nice and tight so no bugs or anything else would crawl inside it. Zenai walked towards his horse that just got up and eating breakfast of grass and more grass. “Stryker, I’m going to hunt out for a bit. Keep an eye on the camp and find me if there’s any trouble. Don’t be a hero.” Zenai look as if either can talk to animals or was mad. Stryker responded with his usual neigh which Zenai believed would translate to “Sure”. He then took off Vicky off his head and placed it on Stryker’s. “Vicky, you stay with Stryker as well. Keep yourselves company, you know?” Vicky chirped as if having understood Zenai. “You should keep an eye out as well and coming flying to me if there’s any danger.” Satisfied with Vicky’s “acknowledgement”, Zenai approached Ainyi. “Alright. I think the camp is tidied up enough and I’m ready. Let’s go.” He would need to ignore the following tease; let her shoot hot air from her maw.
Green is when I'm speaking Common.
Blue is when I'm thinking in my Mind.
Teal is when everybody else is speaking.
Red is when I'm speaking Nari.
