Fortune Telling

Postby As'Fien on March 21st, 2010, 8:26 pm

((Sorry, I jumped the gun on the boards for this! ^^; Noob moment!))

Novice (1-25)
You know what your tools mean, but you are only getting the hang of one set such as cards, sticks or tea leaves. You can identify the facts about the various ways of implementing them. What they mean for the person you are trying to tell the fortune of is something you must practice at repeatedly. You might be able to take cues from what a person is saying every now and then to determine the exact meaning, but the long journey to knowing what it means for the person in general is difficult to determine. A certain card in a certain position can mean many things in a certain area. Your way of determining positions are by basic layouts which have been practiced for generations.

Competent (26-50)
Now you can start earning a living at this instead of entertaining friends at rainy nights. You have a better understanding outside of the basic tools of what helps generate an accurate reading. Reading people and particularly their concerns is still a little beyond you, but with the positioning of the cards, your gut instincts can at least determine someone's past and how to deal with present problems. Your accuracy can sometimes be covered up by reading a person. A smarter fortune teller can determine things about a person's personality and cover up their inability to get an accurate reading (noticing they have a temper and warning their temper might get them into trouble as it has in the past). You are getting the hang of more than one set of tools, but you still favor one style over the other (and tend to get much better accuracy with your favored tools). You are completely comfortable with the basic layouts.

Expert (51-75)
Small villages will think your a being of magical power. You are renowned for accuracy, but exactly how something will happen is not quite in your reach just yet. In general, it's uncommon to have a complete dud in a reading to get something wrong, but you have enough of a mystical tongue to blame it on accidently reading someone else who just walked by. Reading someone's past and present is a cake walk not just from your gift, but your ability to read people. Often times people will realize that the truth was right there in front of them. Little things like how they are dressed or the way they speak can tip you off on other factors going into their reading... after all, nothing amazes people more than to predict that they just got into a bar fight after deducing that from their bruises. You are comfortable using two or more tools at the same time to get a more precise reading. You are also starting to develop your own style of reading instead of going for the cookie cutter methods.

Master (76-100)
People who don't believe in such nonsense come to you for advice. You wouldn't even need to use cards to predict where someone is headed and what's going on in their life. In some ways, you are a master psychologist who can take in the universe in both the physical and spiritual realms and tell people flat out what will happen to them.

Writeups usually include a ton of detail. If you can read the skill and have a lengthy intro that describes the tools, the processes, and what can be produced, then you have a win! If you look at it and still don't know how to use it... its not there yet.

As a writeup, this is incredibly thin and needs a whole lot more detail.

Okay, writing a skill involves a lot of explanation, not just a skill tree. You might want to talk about some of the types of fortune telling. There needs to be an explanation of process (how it works), how one trains in it, and what can be done aka the extent it can be used. Here's a partial list of some forms of fortune telling that you could talk about.

  • augury: by the flight of birds.
  • bibliomancy: by books; frequently, but not always, religious texts.
  • cartomancy: by cards.
  • cheiromancy/palmistry: by palms.
  • chronomancy: about time, lucky/unlucky days.
  • extispicy: by the entrails of animals.
  • feng shui: by earthen harmony.
  • hydromancy: by water.
  • I Ching divination: by yarrow stalks or coins and the I Ching or some mizahar version of it
  • lithomancy: by stones or gems.
  • numerology: by numbers.
  • oneiromancy: by dreams.
  • onomancy: by names.
  • palmistry: by lines and mounds on the hand.
  • pyromancy: by fire.
  • rhabdomancy: divination by rods.
  • runecasting/Runic: by runes.
  • scrying: by reflective objects; crystallomancy if by a crystal ball
  • spirit board: by planchette or talking board.
  • taromancy: by a form of cartomancy using tarot cards.
  • tasseomancy: by tea leaves or coffee grounds.

But regardless you need to make sure you include the how/why of it and the way in which it works. Also stay away from telling people how they'd react to people with these sorts of abilities in the level descriptions. Just give calm clear facts on what they can do at what level.
