The Silver Beacon

Image

Denval's centuries old lighthouse shines out to the sailors and ships to warn them off from the rocks. Originally constructed in 327 A.V. to keep a light shining for the fishermen travelling off shore in the darkness, it was re-purposed from a series of signal fire beacons that were spread throughout the pre-Valterrian Unforgiving. There was a more subtle motivation in its new incarnation, though: the hope that the tower signal fires might be seen by other denizens of Mizahar, the hope that Denval was not alone.

The Silver Beacon is nestled on a small mount reaching out beyond the settlement's rocky harbor. The strand linking it to the mainland stretches out from Denval's beach, and is only accessible during low tide. The path is treacherous and slippery, but for those in the know, there is a straightforward route.

The Lighthouse is set on three levels, separated by a winding staircase. The uppermost floor is called the Sunwell, where the lights shine. There is a large, hurricane style lantern, surrounded by mirrors at various angles to reflect the light in all directions, piercing the darkness.

The other two floors are the owner's living space, full of curios he has collected from shipwrecks. There are helms, planks of wood, small, exotic ornaments, and even a large anchor. The first floor's central piece is a human-sized statue dedicated to the God of the Sea, Laviku.

Narris, born 437 A.V., has kept the light shining in the Silver Beacon for many years. Originally an apprentice of the old lighthouse master, affectionally known as Flotsam, he was serving in 451 A.V. when Kenabelle Wright and her crew arrived in Denval, bringing news of the outside world.

He lost his wife to sea on an evening fishing trip, when the boat ran into a cluster of sharp rock. On that evening the Sunwell didn't burn, the master of the Beacon having arrived late for his shift, and in her final moments, he promised her he would keep the light shining on Denval's shore for as long as he lived.

He keeps himself to himself in the lighthouse, revering Laviku, God of the Sea, and collecting odd curios from visiting merchants, and the shipwrecks of the past. Kenabelle Wright brought some items from Zeltiva with her that he keeps sequestered in his private quarters. He enjoys painting and writing in his free time.

For a man of his age, Narris is surprisingly spry. During low tide, he ventures into town once a week for supplies, navigating the dangerous mount and strand with a youthful agility. His skill in unarmed combat has not diminished much over the years.

His decades of communion with the sea have granted him favor from Laviku. His patience and faith in Laviku are unchallenged in Denval, and he will continue to channel his faith into the oceanic deity.
