Coren walked through the many corridors of the skyglow hold. Trying to keep from showing his nervousness that he was feeling crawling underneath his skin and just tried to look like the boring and weird guy that he always was seen in his own hold as he slowly got closer to the room where most of the art supplies off the hold where stored. Besides it wasn't as if he was doing anything wrong if he just took a dozen pages of paper, as long as he pitched in a little bit when the supply was running low. And if they asked why he was taking so much paper he could probably get away with mentioning he liked drawing something when he was bored or bring up the fact he got interested in writing thanks to working in the library. Coren nodded to himself as his mind finally settled on those facts. That sounded believable and nobody would suspect him of using the pieces of paper for other purpuses. At least if he just could stop fidgeting and start acting more normal.

After what seemed ages coren finally reached the store room and quickly stepped inside, letting his gaze slide over the many supplies for most of the art forms the skyglows practiced. All neatly stacked and organized so that everybody could easily find what they where looking for. Thanks to that it didn't take coren to long before he noticed a small pile of paper laying on one of the shelves, and grabbed a bunch of papers, being careful enough not to wrinkle the paper to much before he turned around and walked out of the storage room and quickly made his way back to his own private room with a small pile of papers underneath his arm. And it seemed that luck was even on his side for once, since he didn't meet anybody on the way to his room that cared enough to question him on what he was going to do with the pile of papers underneath his arm.

As coren finally got to his room he closed the door behind him, making sure to lock it, before walking over to his desk and carefully dropping the stack of papers on his desk and dropped down in his chair with a sigh. At least he had that part out of the way. Though the hardest part was still going to come. Actually writing out what he had been planning for some time. A book about projection filled with everything he knew about it and how to practice it more or less safely.

Coren checked how much ink he still had in his inkwell, frowning a bit as he noticed it was a lot emptier then he thought it had been. He just grabbed his quill and took a piece of paper as he let out a sigh, he wasn't going to walk all the way back to the storeroom just to grab another vial of ink. He would just need to make do with this amount of ink and get some more ink after he used this up. If he didn't stop writing for a while before the ink ran out anyway, he hadn't ever tried to write a book before and he didn't even dare to think it would be easy.

So coren thought for a while how he wanted to start the book, absentmindedly twirling the quill in his hand as he was thinking. Slowly trying to put together a rough idea about what should be in the first chapter and how he should be writing it. After a few chimes of coren staring at the still blank piece of paper he just shrugged and dipped the quill in the ink and began writing down the first chapter in his book as good as he could. Sometimes furiously scribbling out some parts and cursing as his writing hand sometimes smudged a section of writing, forcing him to reproduce it. But after chimes had passed coren finally had something he could be more or less approve off. As long as he disregarded the many scribbles and smudges on the thing thanks to his sloppy handwriting and the fact his left hand sometimes smudged the ink as he was writing.
An introduction to projection

Projection is one of the oldest magical disciplines known to the world of mizahar. Before I can begin to explain what projection actually entails I need to explain some basics about the relation between the body and the soul, since this is the domain that projection alters to do what the magic does.

One has to understand that the soul is build out of multiple layers and that the one on the outside of the soul control's the movements of the physical body is called the astral body. This outermost layer is the the only part of the soul that is important in projection so I will not go deeper in on the subject of the soul aside from that. In normal conditions the astral body puppeteers a body from the inside and is perfectly synchronized with the body it is connected with.

What projection does with this system is temporally severing the bond between the physical body and the astral body and making it possible to control the astral body independent of the physical body. Of course this means that one can't move the part of the physical body that has lost the attachment, but the astral body has some serious advantages over a normal limb, the first and most obvious one is that an astral body cannot be seen by others then the mage, unless they use another way to locate it. Like auristics for example. Another is that an astral body can stretch to cover longer distances, the distance it can stretch being dependent on the skill of the projector. The few less obvious advantages is that the projector controls how material his projected limb is. Allowing them to phase their limbs through objects as they see fit.

With these advantages it would seem moronic not to learn projection, of course as a projector myself I can tell you lots of stories where projection came in handy. But like any magical discipline there is a terrible price to pay. In this case the main danger lies in the fact that we are disturbing the synchronization between your own physical and your astral body. With consequences that can range from a temporary loss of feeling and sharp pains, losing control of the entire limb of the physical body you have been abusing or even being pushed out of your body as a ghost. Of course these are the dangers of magic specific to projection, the normal overgiving can still occur and wreak havoc on your body.

Coren nodded as he rereaded the bit he had written down. It seemed satisfactory and he thought he had incorporated most of his master's warnings in it.

Still, coren wasn't done by a long shot with the introduction as he hadn't even filled a page. So coren leaned back in his chair for a while and played around with his quill as he began thinking about what information he could still add without it seeming out of place or just plain disruptive because it suddenly began talking about something else. After a few moments coren was hit by a flash of inspiration. There would probably be people who picked up his book, if it ever got finished properly of course, who never even studied magic before. They wouldn't know what overgiving was in the first place. So coren quickly began writing again. Occasionally cursing his offhandedness as he smudged his ink again. But he didn't get discouraged by those small setbacks and just continued to write down his thoughts.

For those people who have never heard of the term overgiving. Overgiving is the consequence of expending to much of one's own djed reserve. Which causes a number of negative mental, physical and spiritual consequences to crop up. Ranging from minor cases which can be recovered from without to much problems to mayor cases that are irreversible and debilitating. Even death can be a consequence of mayor overgiving and it isn't actually that uncommon for a mage to die after he pushed his limits too much.
This is enough of an introduction and explanation on the basic underlying principles that projection works on to make safe practice possible. For those among the readers who are wondering if this is every you will need to know to start practicing projection. The answer is yes, you know more then you need to start practicing projection. Since projection is a discipline with not to much theory and mastery comes with practice more then study. Of course one needs to be initiated before one can actually preform the magic.

Coren looked over the little paragraph and frowned as he tried to think of anything he could add to make the information more complete. But he didn't immediately thought of anything. So for now the introduction would be complete. Besides this was a working version anyway, so he could make revisions and addums anytime he found out something new. He stretched himself to work out the kinks of writing for a long time out of his body before picking up the quill again. Before he began writing again, this time planning to get more in debt about the initiation and maybe even suggesting a few exercises for a starting projector who just had been initiated. Though he probably should be careful that he didn't give accidentally wrote down an exercise that would be to though for the people who had just started with walking down the path of mastering projection. He didn't want his students to accidentally cripple himself after all.

Now for those who do not know what initiation exactly is, it is the ritual or practice a prospective student must undergo to be able to use some disciplines of magic They can range from highly traumatic, like the initiation ritual from projection, or a harmless task Like meditation for shielding.

Now lets just speak about how to learn projection, firstly you will need to be initiated, like with most magical disciplines. Now the initiation for projection entails that your entire soul will be pulled out of your body, this has to be done slowly to make sure it isn't damaged in the process, I do not have to mention that this is a frightening experience that might have long term consequences if not done right. So if your mind really is set on pursuing projection as a magical discipline I would urge you to find an experienced projector that knows what he is doing. One does not want to start ones career in magic at the cost at a limb. Even if one has to pay a steep price thanks to overgiving, one would rather pay that later down the line instead of right at the beginning.

After you have survived your initiation intact you are able to push out your astral body by willpower and manipulation of djed alone. Now lets begin talking about the two way's one can separate and reattach the astral body from the physical one and the advantages and disadvantages of both those ways.
Firstly there is detaching the astral body starting with the extremities of the limb, like the fingertips for example, and moving on towards the torso. With detachment using this method is the same but then in reverse, from the torso to the extremities. The advantages of this way of detachment is that it is almost done instantly and is easy and natural, almost requiring no thought. So it is useful in a pinch. But the disadvantages is that there is a lot more risk of lasting trauma to the limbso it should be avoided whenever possible if you want to keep using your limbs.
Secondly there is detaching the astral body starting at the point the closest to the torso and slowly working its way down to the extremities of the limb. The disadvantage of this method is that its a lot slower and is a bit harder to use then the first method. Its advantage is that it is a lot safer and less damaging on the limb in question. So I suggest you will try to keep to the second method when practicing and only use the first method when you really need to use projection fast.

Coren looked over what he had written, a small satisfied smile hidden beneath his mask as he looked too what his hard work had produced. He probably didn't have much to say about the theory after this and probably should begin including some simple exercises that he had been using when he was new projector and maybe even give some examples of glyph's that made detaching and reattaching the astral body easier for them. But that was for later, he had already been cooped up in his own room for entire bells for morwin's sake! He quickly gathered the pages he had written as he began looking around his room for a place to hide them in. After much internal debate he decided to hide it underneath the bed for now. There wasn't anybody cleaning his room aside from himself and he didn't know why somebody would look underneath his bed for any other reason. After having expertly hidden his manuscript he screwed the lid on his now almost empty vial of ink and walked out of the room, once again locking the door behind him
