Facing the Heat, Hoping to Impress (solo, Job acquiring)

The Details:
Time of Season, Year: 79th day of Winter, 511 AV
Time of Day: Around Noon
Location/s: The Rolling Waves and then the University
Summary: Hired as the cook for a caravan of merchants, Jarah finally arrives at the ‘main’ gates of Zeltiva, and after the group is allowed to enter, the Slyiras born man parts ways with them seeking out the University as he has heard rumors that the Head Chef Master of the school might be looking for another set of hands for the kitchen. Only after being tested in his knowledge and skill will Jarah learn if he has what it will take to not only impress the Head Chef Master but also land a job among the scholars.

The Tale:
The traffic was at a standstill as each of the wagons before the one Jarah was perched upon were searched and made sure that the contents of each of the barrels were not rotten or hide something that might be considered illegal inside the shoreline city of Zeltiva. It had taken the small four wagon caravan, three of which held the goods that were to be sold within the city while the fourth was the one that resembled a curved roofed style little cabin on wheels (this one had served as the storage for the merchants survival things and the items that Jarah had been in charge of since he was the cook), almost three weeks to travel somewhat safely from the gates of Syliras to the Rolling Wave’s location. While on a good horse it might have taken a single rider two weeks, given the fact that they had four wagons and four men on horseback it had naturally taken them a bit longer. So now Jarah was a bit sore in the ‘saddle’ as it were even though they had often stopped at night for the safety of the group.

Suddenly the wagon (the one that held all the survival supplies and cookware inside) lurched forward as the line began to move again. Already out of the group two of the wagons were already inside and the searching of the third wagon was moving as smoothly as the first two had, then again Jarah was sure that the merchants hadn’t any contraband and that none of the goods had spoiled during the trip as the merchants had always checked the barrels when they had stopped for the evenings. Again the wagon was moving again and it was their turn, Jarah climbed down off the bench as he was going to part from the group once inside the gates. As the wagon was searched, he walked over to where the guard could ask him the usual questions that most people were asked when entered through a gate of a city.

Greetings, what brings you to Zeltiva?” The man asked Jarah as he began to look through the amateur cook’s pack.

I’m seeking to get a job with the University… I hope. If not there then I’ll try at the local tavern or move on.” He explained as the guard nodded and then handed Jarah back his pack.

You look clean, go ahead. As for the University it’s toward that direction and the guy you’ll want to ask for is a man known as Head Chef Master Dave among the students and faculty.”

After thanking the guard for the directions, Jarah moved further inside and stopped to talk to the leader of the merchant caravan. The merchant was sad to see the cook go as his meals had been the best they had ever had upon the road, but he understood the ambition that seemed to glow from within the dark eyes of the Syliras gentleman. Collecting the fee that had been agreed on between Jarah and the merchant leader back in Syliras, Jarah said goodbye to the group, turned and set his leather booted feet off in a simple stride toward the grand school.

His feet causing a soft crunching noise as the street was pressed down by the pressure his weight and the weight of his pack. The crisp air coming from the ocean stinging at his flesh, making him wish he had thought to purchase a wool or even fur lined cloak before the winter weather had really set in. Then again Jarah was more used to being around a roaring fire with its magical dancing flames, but now he was starting to really feel the nip of the chill.

Continuing down the streets, Jarah’s dark eyes scanned the surroundings that were passed by as he headed away from one side of the elegant city toward the University, he just hoped beyond anything else he had ever hoped for that the Head Chef Master would be available for a meeting with him. Then again he also was busy trying to think of recipes he might be able to use if he got asked to prove his cooking or kitchen skills.

Facing the Heat, Hoping to Impress (solo, Job acquiring)

The Details:
Time of Day: A little after two hours after noon
Location: The University Campus grounds and then the Main Kitchen

The Tale:

Climbing high into troposphere, stood the elegantly crafted and constructed cylinder that was home to the Tower of Astronomy for the University, which was able to grab almost any person’s eye when they first reached the outer ring of the campus’s ground. Standing there in awe of the artwork, time and craftsmanship that had clearly gone into the building, Jarah couldn’t believe how high it was but then again one often needed a clear view of the night sky when one was studying Astronomy. His mouth hung slightly open as he looked up and then slowly lowered his gaze toward the ground where the rest of the collection of buildings had been built. Now which one housed the kitchens was the only real thought running through the Syliras’s mind.

Taking a few steps forward he puzzled over each of the buildings individual architecture before moving toward what he assumed was the main building where one might go with questions regarding the school. However before he reached the building, Jarah caught sight of a young man running from one of the community buildings, the living quarters of the students, toward another building that was actually the main kitchens of the school, not that Jarah would know that. So quickly picking up his pace toward the lad, Jarah flagged the boy down so he could inquire as to where he might find the Head Chef Master.

Excuse me, I was wondering where I might find the Head Chef Master? You see I’m hoping to apply as a cook.” Jar explained to the lad who looked a little worried that he had been stopped by some stranger.

Oh Chef Master Dave is in the main kitchen getting ready for the dinner meal while the dishes from lunch are tended toward by the dishwashers. You can follow me if you like.” The body shifted the weight of the tray from his left side on to his right as he waited for Jarah’s answer. Alas he didn’t wait too long as he didn’t want to face a lecture from the Chef Master for being late with the dishes. So the boy took off as best he could with the load in his hands, unsure if the stranger was following him or not.

Of course Jarah had made sure to fall into line behind the lad as he took off again toward the kitchen. When they both arrived Jarah paused just inside the doorway and smiled as his face was assaulted with the sights, sounds, and most of all the mouthwatering scents of the food that had and was currently being cooked within the brick walls. Oh this was truly Jarah’s nirvana in the non-spiritual world if one was to ask him. He could have died right then and would have counted himself among those that had been truly blessed in life.

Suddenly there was a load bang as a tower of dirty food covered pots and pans fell to the stone cobbled flooring causing one elderly gentleman to turn around and start yelling at the careless student who had seemingly had either volunteered or been punished to dish washing duty that day.

Petch it, Willamar, I told you not to over load yourself. That was way too many for you to carry alone. And don’t even think you can use your magic in here otherwise you’ll be strapped down with two weeks.” Okay so clearly that lad was serving a punishment sentence instead of a volunteering one.

The student quickly set to work gathering up the spill of iron and bronze and moving them by hand into the large basin like sinks that had been set up for washing and rinsing the dishes. It was clear that Willamar did not want another week of this kind of work. The old man turned softly chuckling with a soft smile on his age weathered lips as he returned to the task he had been doing before the spill had taken place. It was as he started to look back down at the leather bond book on the table before him, that the elderly gentleman noticed Jarah standing in the doorway.

Since when did we get a new door? I’m afraid it won’t help keep out the Bonesnapper very much, so are you coming or going young man?” He asked Jarah as he leaned back on the stool he was perched upon.

Jarah shook his head to remind himself where he was, took enough steps in so he could close the actual door behind him, and then quickly crossed the space between the door and where the man was. “Forgive me, I was looking for Head Chef Master Devindaher. I’ve come to inquire about a position among his staff as a cook.”

Well then you are in luck for you have found him, and please call me Chef Master Dave many already do. So you aspire to be a cook? Well are you just a fool that thinks he can cook or might you have some previous background in the task? You see I don’t have time to be teaching some fool with a hair brain notion that he just woke up with one morning and thought he could be a cook. I take my kitchen very seriously so those I hire must be serious in the craft as well.” Devindaher looked Jarah over with a judging eye, something told the old man this boy had the knack for the craft but well he did like putting pressure on someone so as to test them. After all if someone couldn’t cook while under pressure be it time or any other reason than they really had no place in among the staff of the University’s main kitchen. At least that’s how Chef Master Dave reasoned it out to be.

Actually Sir I am quite used to the labor it takes to prepare a meal for several different people all with different ideas and tastes. I have been cooking for my family since I was ten though I wasn’t allowed to do it totally alone until I was around thirteen if I’m remembering my timing right. However I do have knowledge in cooking, a bit of philtering. I can also write and my mother and sisters would sometimes tell me I could negotiate a chicken out of an egg. Though I think they are a bit biased on that part, Sir. I do hope to get better in my skills through time and trial and that is why I have come to you seeking a job.”

I see well then I think we shall just find out how good of a cook you are, don’t worry too much about the philtering, right now I would like to test your accuracy and speed with a knife. Over there is a pile of five hundred potatoes that need washing, peeling and then a good salt water bath. Your task will be to get as many done in one hour, and try to not get any of your blood on them.” The Head Chef Master had led Jarah over to the pile, were there was a bucket, a stool and a knife that he could use for peeling the potatoes.

Now when you fill the bucket up with peelings, just call Jazob over and he’ll dump it for you. Now get to work.” And with that Jarah was left alone with the mountain of spuds.

Facing the Heat, Hoping to Impress (solo, Job acquiring)

Postby Jarah Sulayman on March 19th, 2012, 2:44 pm

The Details:
Time of Day: A little after two hours after noon
Location: The University Campus grounds and then the Main Kitchen

The Tale:

Time ticked by and while those that worked in the kitchen were busy bustling around, Jarah was lost in the task that had been given to him, the mountain of spuds that he started to tear into starting with the smaller sized ones first. This of course was a bit of a tactic move for the cook as since the larger ones would surely take longer to peel, thus the bucket that had been placed before the stool Jarah was sitting on began to quickly fill up as skin cleaned yellowish white potato was tossed into a bin that would be used to rinse the dirt off of them before they would be used in the meals preparation.

Many times Jarah managed to get the peels off in one long continuous strand other times they came off in pieces or several strips, but about fifteen minutes into his time frame, Jar had moved on from the small to the medium sized potatoes. He of course repeated the process for peeling, starting at the top of the potato’s shape and moving down until no skin was left.

Numerous times he would quickly signal to the boy that would grab the pail overflowing with skins and replace it with an empty one while he ran to empty the one that had just been picked up. Jarah’s hands were of course starting to hurt by the time he reached the larger spuds that seemed to make up a third of the pile. Taking in a deep breath, the cook in training slowly let it out and focused all of his thoughts and skill into finishing the task. He didn’t even dare look up as the last few seconds ticked away and the Head Chef Master who had been keeping an eye on Jarah the whole time, strolled over to where Jarah was and placed a hand on the lad’s squared shoulder. This caused Jarah to jump almost slicing the knife’s tip into his thumb.

That’s enough you did well, no one else by themselves have been able to get as far into a mountain like that before. Come now it’s time for your next test.” Devindaher showed Jarah over to where the potatoes were being washed up by two women that were often in charge of the cleaning up of the vegetables.

Now I want you to make me a dish using these potatoes… don’t’ worry you don’t have to use all of them just want to see your skill in coming up with something new, exciting and that would be pleasing to a taster’s palate. I’ll give you an hour and a half this time.

Jarah was then given a small section of the kitchen to work on his next task. This was just fine with Jarah as while he could often work with others he greatly preferred to work by himself when it came to ‘designing’ a new recipe for someone. With a bowl of freshly washed potatoes on the counter top, Jarah began to puzzle over what to make. Then he got an idea, this caused a smile to appear on his scarred face as he headed off to the storage room to gather together the ingredients he needed. Selecting out some cream from the chiller, a small chunk of butter from a jar of butter, along with a wedge of white cheese, next he picked out some garlic, bread, salt, pepper, eggs, and some yellow medium sized onions. With these items all in two bowls, Jarah carried them out of the storage room and back to his station. Once back there he set to work starting first with slicing the onions so they would be a nice thin thickness making it easier to cook them, he also sliced the potatoes in thin manner as well.

Mincing the garlic went by fast as did tending to the eggs until they were slightly beaten. Jarah took the bread slices he had taken from one of the baguettes’ end pieces and toasted it until it was just dry but now browned. These became crushed until they were one fourth of a cup of crumbs. Jar then whipped the cream until he had two cups worth. Last came the task of finely shredding up the cheese wedge he had picked out from the chiller pantry.

After the prep work was done, Jar set to work mixing the ingredients together in a pan that would be going into the oven that was next to the stove. He started with placing the spud slices into a large cooking pot, then mixed in the whipped cream, garlic along with about a teaspoon of salt and just a half a teaspoon of the pepper. This was brought up to a boiling point and then moved to a smaller flame and was allowed to simmer for a maximum of twenty five minutes with a lid upon the pot. This was to make sure the potatoes were tender to the touch.

In the next part of his recipe process, Jarah took the pot from the stove and stirred in the eggs, and three cups out of the full four cups he had shredded of the cheese. This mixture was poured into the casserole dish which Jar had smeared butter around the surface to make sure that the dish didn’t burn or stick to the pan itself. However he had layered the garlic and potato mixture between a layer of the thinly sliced onions. Once the dish was full of the onions and creamy mixture, Jarahed combined the bread crumbs with the remaining cup of shredded cheese and sprinkled this over the potatoes and onion casserole. Taking the dish over to the oven, Jarah slid the item in and then waited for another twenty five minutes, basically until the cheese had melted and the potatoes were tender to cut through.

Plating up some of the meal, after having carefully removed the hot pan from the oven, Jarah carried this plate over to where the Head Chef Master was waiting for him with a fork in hand. Now came the real test of both Jarah’s talent and nerves as he waited for the review from the man that held his fate in aged hands.

The Head Chef Master took his time tasting the meal that was presented to him. It was a bit of a twist on a potato meal but something told him that many of the students and staff members of the University would like the meal as it was different. Finishing off the plate Master Devindaher kept Jarah waited by drinking some of the wine from his glass that had been filled by one of the helper boys, and then wiping his mouth on the back of a cloth rag napkin. He could tell Jarah was waiting as patiently and was doing his best to not show how nervous he was to the older man.

Finally the elder spoke, “That was very interesting I must say. I like the little flare you put in with adding in both onions and garlic with the potatoes. I would love to serve that at the next lunch or dinner meals if you don’t mind teaching it to my staff.” The smile was the finally clue that Jarah had been accepted among the staff of the University’s kitchen and cafeteria. “Welcome on board, Lad. Now go find you a place to stay a cottage nearby preferably. I’ll expect you here bright and early in the morning. I could use a good assistant and something tells my old bones you are the man for the job. And don’t worry I’ll be sure to let the bosses know so you can start getting paid for your work around here.

Jarah grabbed the man that was now his boss’s hand and shook it with a firm grateful grip. “Thank you, Sir. I’m glad you like the dish, and I’ll be here brighter than anyone ever before.” And with that Jar ran out of the kitchen leaving behind a chuckling Head Master Chef who didn’t stray long at his little table as he had another meal to prepare and time along with hungry bellies waited for no lay about.
