He had to go away her mother told her. Go away to start his life. Duvain was only ten years old and her big brother was leaving home to venture farther south. But...she didn't want her brother to go, he was her best friend. If he left now what would she do? Everything would change and change wasn't something Duvain liked much. There was no one like him. When they played together he would flip her upside down and give her piggy-back-rides. No one else was strong enough to do those things.

The day he left would be something Duvain would remember for the rest of her life. It was a bright morning the day he departed. With the horse saddled and the sattlebag packed with all the needed eqipment, Duvain watched the goodbyes between him and their mother. After they finished the heartfelt goodbye he came and kneeled in front of Duvain to make up for her lack of height. As she looked at his face she saw his eyes were filled with sorrow. She had never before seen her big brother shed a tear until now. Men never cried she thought and yet the tear streaming down her brother's face proved her wrong.

"Duvain," he said "I know you're going to grow up to be something great. Be wise in your decicons and if you believe in something, fight for it with everything inside you."

As he finished speaking he untied the arrowhead necklace from around his neck and placed it in Duvain's hand. "This is yours now." And with that he got on his horse and rode away. As soon as his horse was out of sight, Duvain ran back into the cottage to her bed and cried into her pillow. It was hard to believe that he was gone and not coming back. And yet he wasn't. It must have been close to an hour when she stopped crying and the only reason being that she couldn't cry anymore. The only thing she had left to hold onto him by was the arrowhead necklace that was still in her hand. With a face wet with tears she gazed upon the arrowhead at the end of a thin rope. She had her mother tie it around her neck for her and from that moment on...It never came off.
