Coping with Disaster

Silver Frostfawn

Silver awoke to the smell of breakfast in the kitchen, and a fire in the furnace of her home. These were the best days to wake up to. She smiled, stretched, and threw her legs over the side of the bed. As she was getting dressed, Silver noticed the snow outside, falling in what seemed like a white blanket. She threw on her fur coat and leggings to keep extra warm, even though it was hardly necessary anymore. She had turned sixteen only a season ago and received her mark of Morwen. It was given to every Vantha when they came of age, but Silver still felt as though it were an honor, and wore it with pride.

The wooden steps creaked below her has Silver made her way into the kitchen, taking in the delicious smell of bacon and eggs on the stove. Her father smiled at her as he finished up another batch of bacon, and her mother was deep into her latest novel, a piece of bacon held in her hand, never quite finding its way to her mouth. Silver let out a whistle, and Winter came flying into the room and onto her shoulder.

"Goodmorning! It is snowing pretty hard outside, is it safe to go outside? Silver asked sitting down at the table. She absent-mindedly stroked Winters side, taking on of the owl treats left on the table and giggling as he eagerly ate it off her hands. "I would avoid it if you can, why? Were you going somewhere today dear?" Her father noted.

Silver shook her head. It was as good a day as ever to stay at home. She could finish up the painting of the elk she had seen earlier, or perhaps attempt to sharpen her skill at ice carving that seemed to have gotten progressively worse over the past few seasons.

She was lost in thought when a loud and fast banging came from the front door. Startled, Silver jumped and whirled around to face the door. Generally Frostfawn greetings were very gentle and polite, so she was instantly nervous. Despite the urgency of the knock, her father answered with a calm demeanor as always. She couldn't quite hear the conversation, but Silver could see the color draining from the back of her fathers neck. She shot a worried glance towards her mother, who returned it just as quickly.

After a few moments, her father came back, pain written all over his face. It had already been a rough winter, what with the blizzards, and Morwens being gone. Silver was not excited to see what had hit Avanthal next. "We must go to the front gates, it seems we have had a little.. prank" The way her father said prank made Silvers skin crawl. She took her time lacing up her fur boots, hesitant to face what might lie outside.

As soon as she stepped out the doors, a wall of wind nearly knocked Silvre off her feet. She let out a tight squeal, and regained her balance. The snow stung her face as she followed her father to the Frostfawn front gates. Her father seemed to be shaking, though she knew it was not from the cold. This made her even more nervous. Her father was a tough man.

When they reached the front gates, Silver was greeted by a group of about a dozen of Frostfawn families, all crowded around the gate. Some were crying, others shaking their head in what seemed to be disgust. One Jeremy Frostfawn she saw stalk off and put his fist through a wooden fence, muttering a slew of curses. Silver made her way slowly to what every one was looking at, and when she pushed her way through the crowd to see, let out a scream.

On the front porch of Frostfawn Hold, were five dead puppies.
