AppearanceRace: Human (Drykas)
Gender: Female
Age: Twenty one
Birthday: 14, Autumn, 491 AV.
Birthplace: Endrykas
Appearance: Rahni is a little smaller than the average, at least in her Pavilion, at around 5"3. She has delicate features and an equally fragile frame. Her hair is a reddish-brown, a coppery color that contrasts with her pale skin. Her hair falls to about her waist, perhaps a little longer, and, due to the intensive braiding she subjects it to daily, has an unnatural but constant wave to it when let loose. Her eyebrows are thick and her eyes a pale grey-blue. Having received her Windmarks, Rahni has a tattoo on her back. Hers is a black marking on her left shoulder blade, it snakes down her side and finishes just above her hip. On Rahni's right leg there is a burn. It's a large burn, from her knee down to her toes, and much of the skin there is now mere scar tissue. One of her toes, the smallest, is also missing. Nothing but a burnt stub remains.
Character ConceptRahni is a quiet woman, not through shyness of lack of associates, but more because she rarely has anything to say. She doesn't let that bother her, instead she likes the silence, is more than content to roam the fields with nothing but her horse and her own thoughts to keep her company. When she does talk to people, she's confident with everyone, treating them all - friends, family and strangers - with an equally open attitude. For Rahni, no topic is inappropriate and she doesn't let a little thing like tact stop her from asking questions. Rahni has a view that she would call realistic but most, her own parents included, would be more likely to label as a pessimistic attitude to life. "If you expect the worst, then whatever happens will be a pleasant surprise" Is a saying her father taught her when she was a child, and she uses the phrase frequently. She can be quite sarcastic when she's in a bad mood, or among friends. For her, sarcasm isn't to be taken as an insult and is more her normal state of being. Due to her leg injury, Rahni has gained a fear of fire, a complete and utter detest for being pitied, and the destruction of her childhood dream of one day leaving the Pavilion and going on an adventure.
Character HistoryRahni grew up in the Sunstream pavilion of the Amethyst Clan. At eleven she earned her windmarks and a strider. The horse in question, named Mantis, was a foal at the time and the two grew up together. Her childhood until her fourteenth year was simple and uninteresting. She had two brothers and an older sister who had married young and moved to the Opal Clan to be with her husband. Rahni was known, by now, for her sharp tongue and preference for solitude and, now she was older and more sensible, the majority of the clan simply let her be when she rode off by herself.
It was one such time that it happened. To this day, Rahni doesn't know how the fire started. One moment she was trotting through the grasslands, intending to return home quite soon because it was getting dark, and the next moment the wind changed, smoke hit her nostrils and Mantis turned and ran. He was fast but he wasn't fast enough. She remembers a tree falling nearby, Mantis dancing backwards to avoid it and then falling as the heat from the fire rose up around her. The last thing she heard was Mantis's cry and the last thing she felt was her leg erupting into agony.
She awoke with her sister standing over her looking, for once, serious. Her leg had nearly been amputated and it was only thanks to Mantis galloping nonstop back to the Clan and leading them back to her that she'd survived at all. As it was, her leg bloody and smelling of burnt flesh, her sister explained that it was very doubtful she'd ever be able to walk again.
For the next twelve months, Rahni made it her life's goal to prove her big sister wrong. She could ride easily enough, providing someone was there to help her onto Mantis's back, and, while dismounting was a problem at first, she eventually got the hang of it without falling. At first her leg was impossible to move at all, save the occasional twitch but, as the years went by, she slowly regained control of the limb. It was hard, sometimes it would hurt for no real reason, and putting too much weight on it doubled the chances that it would collapse and she would end up on the ground, but she persisted and she prevailed.
Now twenty-one, Rahni can hobble along with a stick for an hour or so before the pain becomes so great she has to sit down and take a breather. Her burns did more than just ruin her leg and give her a permanent terror of fire though, it ruined her dreams of one day leaving her Pavilion and going out into the wide world to explore.
