Spring 511

He picked disdainfully at the rotten flesh talons scraping through tissue, exposing it the the elements and insects. The long dead hillgoat's putrid corpse lay torn asunder amidst the scraggy rocks of the mountain side. For his part the Kelvic was one of the last to join the party, other creatures having brought the poor beast to ruins. But he didn't mind, even as the aroma of decay wafted lazily into narrow nostrils. As far as he was concerned it smelled of delicious supper. But having laid out in the sun for a good day or two, the meat was now gamey and tough.

But Fenris pecked on, skewering a prime sliver of thigh and tossing it up into the air so he might swallow it whole. The leathery meat slid down his throat as he stretched his wings back, raising up on plumed legs to encourage the food to an unobstructed path into his gut. He hadn't eaten in three days and thus stale carrion tasted delightful and, more importantly, filled his stomach. Twisting his ebullient head side to side then up and down like a drunk serpent, the Kelvic consider how much more of this hillgoat he'd manage to scarf down before he was shooed off by another larger more aggressive animal. Golden rimmed eyes surveyed the grassy slope, catching sight of the ants some leagues away marching toward his meal. Were he a human he might sigh with defeat, giving the insects access to the rotting pile of goat.

Taking a timid step on narrow feet, Fenris gazed across the mountainous landscape. Kalea had been good to him thus far. All manner of decaying and wounded critters to satiate him and the thermals were absolutely the best on Mizahar. He now set his human goals on Wind Reach, that jewel of a settlement home to the Inarta and the eagles. Well, Fenris wasn't too keen on the eagle bit. They were notorious for not only stealing his meals but for beating the pulp out of any bird that so much as looks at them funny. And vultures had a reputation for being funny looking. It was a minor frustration but the Kelvic couldn't deny the pull of intrigue his human side felt when he considered setting up shop in the westernmost region of Kalea. Hopefully he wouldn't suffer the bullying of eagles. Petching buffoons as far as he was concerned.

Growing tired of this bone picking the vulture craned his head to the side and burst open his wings, extending the very ends so the primary and secondary feathers splayed like fingers. It would take some momentum to get him airborne but with a drop off every fifteen feet it should present no trouble. Heaving forward Fenris took carefully planned steps increasing his momentum and appearing, for all intents and purposes, like a waddling overgrown pigeon as he raced toward a narrow precipice on the mountainside. Finally feet lost track of ground and his enormous wingspan took hold, lifting him from the earth and flapping gracefully against the air. He caught a thermal without trouble, wings poised like great masts of a ship, his large body nearly weightless as he ascended.

Staring down at the mountainside Fenris gave pause to enjoy the view, those ants still a fair ways off from the corpse. Turning his goose-like neck to the side, the Kelvic caught sight of the path to Mount Skyinarta, tilting his wings that he might alter his flight. Shifting directions, he took an enormous downward swoop of his wings before coasting, Wind Reach bound.
