[job] (Never) Treat snow...with more snow

23rd of summer, 213AV

As she walked through the streets, the sun rose gradually higher in the morning sky. The street gradually began to grow busier as shop keepers stocked their stalls to prepare for the day. Early morning shoppers, already bundled for the cool air trudged through the snow, many in their snow shoes due to the fresh and light snow from the night before.

Stopping in front of the Ice Watch medical hospital, she thinks of an old acquaintance, Navas. Looking at this military style hospital, she realizes just how long ago her father had gone missing. It had been almost years since she had last visited this building, and yet she returned. She had only seen Navas as a young girl accompanying her father but never knew him herself. Knocking on the heavy wooden door, she pauses and then entered into the hospital.

Finding Navas, he rose and offered his hand as an old acquaintance of her father. Taking her hand, Shizen looks at his and reads him, one of empathy, but of no sympathy or feeling.

"What may i offer you, Shizen?" he says, having not seen her for a long while.

"[color=#00FFFF]I thought i may be of service to the hospital... would you like my help?"

Looking at her at her, considering the offer, he decided to test her knowledge of the basics.

"Alright, i will have you work as my assistant, given you know the basics it takes..." pausing to begin his battery of questions he begins, " first question, when do you determine the severity of frostbite?"

Already learned of this information, Shizen responded in confidence " Upon the coloration of skin, and the duration of the exposure- blackened limbs and digits are severe, and may need to be amputated."

Unimpressed Vanas continues "good, next question, when you receive a patient whose skin has frozen, or suffered from frostbite, how do you treat it and why?"

"You wrap the skin with a warm cloth, and rapidly thaw it, letting it refreeze will lead to the skin falling off in chunks, leading to severe injury. Proper treatment will save the skin."

His expression soften a bit, knowing she is not a incompetent. Deciding to ask a higher tier question he asks, "Right, and you never treat snow with more snow, it doesn't help. When a person sitting within freezing temperatures, or in exposure to cold water, what may happen when they are stationary, and then move, and why?"

Her expression breaks by a fraction, not knowing the full question, slowly she responds, " A chilled body may die instantly if not warmed, if said person moves their body after being stationary for a time, i had heard of that... i dont know what causes it..."

Leaning forward a small inch, Vanas responds, "you are correct, and this was not an easy question- i dont expect you understand everything, and you will learn in time. And the answer to why that happens- it is assumed by doctors that the chilled blood that is trapped in the limbs, upon movement reenters circulation, and enters the heart- causing it to shut down... and you have proven yourself knowledgeable enough to enter my service, welcome."

24rd of summer, 213AV

The following day, Shizen returns to her doctors assistant work, this time Vanas teaching her the basic wound procedures. The hospital with only a scarce few patients, allows the two time to work on real training.

Sitting at a table Vanas looks at Shizen, again thinking of questions to assess her basic knowledge of the subject.

Vanas sighs and then begins,"alright... What is a basic procedure used to prevent a person bleeding profusely from their arm or leg, and how is it applied?"

"You apply a tourniquet, wrapping a piece of cloth or soft rope before the wound and tightening it, to cut off the bleeding."

"Good, now assuming this person has lost enough blood that their pulse stops, what do you do?"

She paused considering the scenario, her face clear of emotion, then responded "you resuscitate the person by blowing air into their lungs, mouth to mouth, squeezing their nose, then placing both hands on their sternum, pressing around three times to restart their heart and breathing."

Again Shizen had demonstrated basic skills necissary to the field in the eyes of Vanas. "Well your mother taught you well Shizen..." he pauses and looks over towards a patient who had earlier suffered a run by with one of the wild arctic cats," today we will go over basic lacerations and how to treat them... you will then clean and replace that hunters bandages using what i taught you."

Postby Zoastria Snowsong on July 9th, 2013, 2:50 am

Zoa marched into the medical center, her hand holding her shoulder. Her face was pale from pain, but anyone could tell the extent of that pain was highly exaggerated. Zoa was known as being dramatic, no matter if she was on her way to the market or to her death. She walked in, giving both Shizen and Vanas a strained smile.

" I'm sorry. You would not believe what happened to me this morning. There I was, doing my daily aural harmony training, and I fell off my bed and brushed my shoulder against a table." She rolled her eyes, knowing how dumb that sounded. And yet it was the truth. She lifted her hand, showing them a rip in her white shirt where a long gash found it's way down to her elbow. It wasn't bleeding profusely, but it was still bleeding. Zoa sent the both of them a small smile.

Zoastria's particular family was known as the Far Scout family. Everyone since her Grandfather, who first joined the Icewatch, followed his footsteps. It seemed that Zoastria was the only one who didn't want the same fate for herself. She would do anything to stay inside Avanthal and roam the Holds, carving furniture and instruments and singing all the while. A comfortable life. Certainly not a life where she would be left to her own devices, that was for sure.

Zoa shook her head, trying to forget about all of that for the moment. Instead, she looked at the two as patiently as she could, but she was already getting antsy.

(I'm out on vacation in a low reception area on so I'm on my IPhone, pardon the lack of color coding and extras)

Vanas looks at his patient with a look of somewhat exasperation, having just worked with shizen, looking at shizen and sighing he says "shizen, you can take over, this should be easy for you to treat." With a curt nod, shizen replies "alright"

Examining her arm, the cut is shallow, and rough- a simple abrasion on the skin likely from the wood table. Heating some water and humming, shizen then began to prepare a simple balm of a few mint leaves and antiseptic herbs. After a minute the smell of mint began to linger in the air after being made into a small paste able to fill a small vial. Taking the extra for treatment shizen looks at Zoa "this will help your scrape say clean of infection, and reduce the skin irritation." Placing that on the table she walk over to a small medical cabinet and opening door. Looking to the assortment of bandages and medical gear, she finds a light cloth to cover minor cuts and wounds. Taking that she returns to the table. " after using the balm I will wrap your deepest cuts with this cloth to cover the bleeding and prevent it from becoming dirty and getting infected..." Her arm was relatively alright, a light cut running down it, the deepest cut being above her elbow underneath her arm. Looking expectedly at Zoa, shizen says "are you ready for me to treat your arm now? Just hold out your arm please..."

(It's okay, I'm still just learning about all of the extra stuff so I don't mind!)

"I don't know." she held onto her arm tightly. "Is it going to hurt?"

Her childness made it seem as if Shizen and herself were eons apart in age, when in reality it was only two. Zoa finally relented, not caring if it hurt. She just wanted to go back to her practice room so she could start on her flute rehearsal. She had made it into one of the junior chamber ensembles, and didn't want to disappoint by not knowing her music. She hoped idly that this wound wouldn't affect her tone in any way.

"My parents are going to be cross with me" she muttered to herself. They hated her dramatic tendencies. They always told her art is subtle and fluid, not brash like her innate adventures that only caused trouble. She could tell she wasn't wanted here. The only place people liked her was on the stage. In the junior operas, she was almost always the lead, filling the Snowsong Hold with her beautiful voice, clear as the Sun after a snowstorm.

She closed her eyes and handed Shizen her arm.

After she extends her arm, Shizen places a white cloth rag into the now hot water she had set earlier. Soaking it, she takes it out and wrings the excess water. With a lightvoice Shizen gently comments, "it should be painless for he most part, maybe a little sting where the cuts are deeper..." Gently holding her arm, Shizen runs the warm damp cloth down her wound to pre disinfect and remove any residual skin or particles. She examines the the clean scrape and the cut noting the lightest area of the wound looking red and agitated, and progressively worse where the skin had received light abrasions and ending where the skin had actually been cut through but only slightly.

With her hands already clean, shizen dips her index and middle finger tips into the mint green balm and then looks over at her. "Try not to flinch, it may sting a bit but the mint should help..." Looking over her arm again she smiles in reassurance and adds, " ...and your cut is only very light, you have nothing to worry about." Angling her arm straight so that her wound can easily be reached, she carefully begins to apply the balm to the lightest scratches.

[OOC : sorry, I was out without computer too :P and you guys might want to add the tag 'OOC' to these kinds of talks, just in case the graders have a problem with it. Oh, and Shizen, please use past tense. :D)

Ruby walked down the corridor, half her face and tunic covered in blood, lips tightly sealed. Her present attractive appearance was due to a patient, who vomited blood when she peeked into his mouth to check the tonsils. She was about to go into the washroom when she spotted a pale face from afar. The young lady holding her shoulder — whom she would recognize as Zoastria later on — however looked fit enough to rouse Ruby's interest. That aside, she saw another staff approaching Zoastria after conversing with Navas, a new staff she did not recognize. From the chit-chats in the nurse station last night, there was only one person befitting the criteria, someone named Shizen Whitevine. Suppose Ruby showed up bloody and all, she deemed it interesting enough to dismiss her washing-up and straight to Shizen.

"Um... I've been waiting for a while since coming, when am I getting treated ?" Ruby forced a strained smile mimicking a bashful patient coping with her wounds, in the manner of an accomplished liar. If only she could do the same under pressure and not just for pranks, she cursed herself.

Postby Shizen Whitevine on July 15th, 2013, 7:13 am

[OOC: Sorry, its a habit of tensing i hadnt gotten used to, past just doesnt click to me very well D: havent shaked it yet. And i guess zoastria is afk until further notice apparently so i guess i will finish the procedure and keep moving.]

Shizen applied the antiseptic balm carefully over Zoastria's cut and scratches with a light layer and gentle touch. With a sigh or relieved concentration, Shizen looked up to see her patient attempting to suppress her worries and responded to her reassuringly, " don't worry, like i said, its really only a few scratches, take care of keeping it clean and you will be fine in no time."

Having finished the antiseptic layer, Shizen turned to take the white light cloth she had picked up earlier, but an image had caught her eye- another worker stained with blood around her face walking down the hall, stealing a glance over at her as she went. It was rather a quick shot of a reminder that the clinic does deal with far worse patients than those with menial scrapes and bruises. Again she refocused to her own patient, and sitting, she again lightly took her arm. "i will just wrap this around the actual cut to keep it from getting dirty, and to make sure you don't get any residual blood on your clothes."

The wrapping went quickly and easily, and now finished, smiled and placed her hands down on the table casually and smiled. "all done now, that didn't hurt much now did it?"
