Physical Appearance

Image

Acair stands at 5’5”, slightly shorter than the average Svefra; he makes up for this by wearing shoes with thick soles, propping up a little higher. With so many long years on the sea, his muscles are slim and taunt like a jungle animal, multiple white scars and rope burns knotted into his flesh, especially his forearms. His clothes tend to hang off of him and are often dyed bright colours, beads and coloured threads hang from his wrists, leading to his family calling him ‘jungle pole’ as a joke.

A large tattoo of his Tavan, a Manta Ray decorates his back, often hidden behind his shirt. The sides of the tattoo always peek out at his shoulders though, his family calls them his wings. His Gnosis mark Oceanus often ripples over his tattoo, out of sight. However it moves the most while he is asleep and inland, sometimes residing around his neck as if to get his attention.

His face is much like his father’s, sculped and slender, with wandering blue eyes and a head wavy black hair. He is missing an incisor in his upper jaw and has a slightly crooked nose, as if it has been broken in the past, a thing that he is very insecure about.

He has a slanted smile and a booming laugh, one that is very easy to join in with. When he is talking to someone, the intensity of his focus is somewhat off putting to most, but that is because he is analysing them with a rigorous scrutiny

Character Concept

Image

We row on steady waters,
That frolick in the breeze,
We sip on the sweetest sea water
That brings us to our knees

They say we are but scoundrels
Murderers and thieves
They send us gold and men at arms
and accuse us all of greed

We sit upon the borders
Instruments in hand
We write the songs and stories
Of invaders in our land.

They cannot see their folly
They cannot see their harm
Which is why we never halt
The strings of Oceansong.

Acair was born of the Oceansong Pod. Seen as bards an minstrels to non-Svefra, the Oceansong as charged with storing knowledge and carrying across the Suvan sea. Welcomed in all coasts, they tell tales of great battles and quiet weddings, they manage wills and deeds of ownership who lack the ability to read or write. The Pod was largely shattered during the Djed storm of 512, but has continued it's mantra, growing quietly and listening deeply for great stories.

Despite being the child of the Lia of the Pod, Acair does not have any special priveldges, as this is the Svefra way. These are instead enjoyed by his infant sister, Larie. One day she'll become the new Lia of the Pod, simply due to gender and Acair would be lying if he didn't resent the fact. His love for his family though, knows no bounds. This is why he tries so hard to be skilled at the harp, despite having no talent with the many strings. He has become competent, but only after nearly twenty years of practicing.

Acair is loyal to his family, and it is this loyalty that prevents him from attempting to find his own way of life, staying with those who raised him because that is all he has ever been brought up to know. As such, his time away from his family, be it when he is sailing by himself or when he's playing for coins in a dark and seedy inn is often one where he is nervous. Since he has been told many times how dangerous the world is outside the safety of the Pod, he is loath to leave the safety of his Pod for more than a few hours.

Tavan

Image

Mau is a black and white sting ray that Acair met when he was 16. With a 5 metre wing span, his size can be incredibley intimidating despite his kind demeanor. He often swims beside the Mockingbird, the top of it's body skating over the water.

Black and dappled with white spots, he is often impossible to see on dark nights, the splash of water underneath his wings the only way of noticing his presence.

Character History

Acair was born on Vanti island, his close family paying respect to Laviku and praying for an easy birth and a good season's fishing. The birth was relatively calm, Laviku be praised and the boy who would grow up to be Acair Oceansong spent a happy few days on the island, suckling on his mother's breast and staring at his cousins splashing about in the water.

The Oceansong Pod was experiencing something akin to a golden age. Many of their ships sailed as one across the Suvan Sea, collecting and dispensing stories across the land of the Svefra. The grandson of the current Lia, he wasn't given much attention due to his gender. His parents were quiet and caring, teaching him all that was needed to survive the Suvan Sea. Fishing and swimming were all mandatory lessons, each began before he could walk. When he learned to speak, they taught drilled him with memory games and told him stories, quizzing him afterwards.

These things became second nature to him as time went on, musical instruction came shortly after, for just knowing history wasn't enough, he also had to learn to dispense it. His mother gave him her first harp and instructed him on its use. On his twelfth birthday, his father taught him the basics of sailing, allowing him to spend a few hours a day piloting one of their ships by himself. A few years later, once he met Mau, his first Tavan, they gave him a ship. The first one that his father had sailed, The Mockingbird. She proved to be a tricky vessel to pilot, but as the years passed and the strength built up in his hands, he grew to be a worthy sailor for her.

They were easy years, with lazy sailing from one port to another, his father had a certain love for Riverfall and the Akalak people and they spent many seasons there singing songs and telling stories. Attempts were made to teach Acair Tukant but he didn't enjoy learning the language, finding it far too complicated to be of any use.

Times became difficult in 512 when the Djed storm rocked the Suvan sea. Acair's memory of the event is foggy, a result of the rampant magic in the air, ships and their crew were destroyed in moments, great beasts pulled themselves out of the water, swallowing screaming Svefra. Some kneeled on the deck as their ships capsized, praying to their Gods. By the end of the storm, only Acair, his uncle, mother, father and sister had survived. Was it Laviku's will? There was nobody to say. The next few days were spent mourning the dead, sending Avikki to other Pods to assess the damage. Acair's mother became the new Lia and with their remaining three ships, they continued their clan's journey, travelling across the Suvan sea and gathering stories.

Family

Name: Saren
Appearence
Gender: Male
Date of Birth: 19th Autumn, 468 AV
Age: 44
Tavan: A killerwhale named Tsa
Likes: Spiced food, puzzles, fishing.
Dislikes: Loud noises, blood, poorly tuned instruments.
Details: Acair's father and former captain of the Mockingbird, Saren was a well known storyteller and womaniser before he finally settled down. He enjoys playing practical jokes on people and likes to tell people jokes. Saren believes the best way to know a person is to judge their reaction to an inappropriate joke.

Name: Fariel
Appearence
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: 3rd Summer, 476 AV
Age: 37
Tavan: A bottlenose dolphin named Kia (Pardisa of the Oceansong)
Likes: Swimming, singing, sailing.
Dislikes: Cold days, puzzles, strangers.
Details: The recent Lia of the Oceansong Pod, Fariel is Acair's mother and is responsible for his musical tuition. Ever since the Djed storm the previous year, she has found it hard to keep her spirits up; but is determined to see her Pod thrive once more. She can seem harsh because of this, however once you have gotten to know her, you will never know a more welcoming person.

Name: Sallow
Appearence
Gender: Male
Date of Birth: 8th Winter 473 AV
Age: 39
Tavan: An Otter named Sei
Likes: Brawling, dancing, drinking, frisky women.
Dislikes: Facial injuries, splinters, spiders.
Details: Acair's uncle and Saren's half-brother, Sallow has had little to do with the Oceansong Pod. When the ships have docked in an area, Sallow is always the first one off, mingling with the locals and skulking off to the darker corners of town. Fariel doesn't approve of his behavior and is constantly trying to get him to perform with the rest of the family, which he always manages to flee from. Fariel bears with him because he is her brother in law, and that he provides for the Pod by giving her a small bag of gold each time they leave port. She doesn't like asking how he managed to earn it though.

Despite this, he is a capable musician, his rough baritone famous when he was younger and his sharp memory means he often corrects Saren whenever Acair is getting a historical lecture from him.

Name: Larie
Appearence
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: 6th Summer 507 AV
Age: 6
Tavan: None
Likes: Swimming, playing with schools of fish
Dislikes: Seaslugs, fighting
Details: Acair's younger sister, her current grooming to be the leader of the Pod is somewhat frustrating to him. Despite his people's customs, he can't help but wonder if he would be better suited to power. Larie is still an infant in everyones eyes, everybody's favorite.

Ship

Image

The Mockingbird is 30 feet long and 35 feet high. A Casinor owned by the Oceansong Pod, it has been in Acair's immediate family for three generations. The reason for the ship's name is a mystery, however Acair's father believes it may have it's origins in the a small carving of a song bird on the ship's mast, long since eroded with age. The ship can carry five people and has a max cargo hold of 500 lbs.

She has a single cabin and a small cargo hold below deck. The cabin is 12 feet squared and contains a small bed, chest, desk and candle lamp. Small birds are carved into the door frame, recently coloured by Acair with black paint. while the ship is moving, they seem to dance along the wood.

The Mockingbird has a curved prow with a stem-head, ornate carved into a bird's beak. With two masts, she uses two to three lanteen sails, however there is the capability of adding supplementary sails should they be needed. No mounted weapons or any such defence capabilities have been added but there is certainly enough space to do so. She relies on her maneuverability rather than speed when in a battle. This gives her a certain advantage in a storm.
