Silnas Windhoof

Appearance

Race: Human, Drykas
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Birthday: 1, Summer, 494.
Birthplace: Sea of Grass

Appearance: Silnas is a tall woman with an athletic, lean build. While she has a flat chest and little figure to speak of, she makes up for it with a long torso and equally long legs. Her long arms also give her a good reach with her spear. She's about 5'10" in height, which serves to her advantage, and her high, distinctive cheekbones, slanted eyes, and sharp, straight nose only serve to make her even more intimidating.

The copper colored skin that she was born with helps to protect her from the sun, while her hair and eyebrows are dark brown in coloration. Her eyes are different in that she has one dark brown eye and one very light blue eye, yet she still can see (and hear) perfectly well. And like most Drykas, her hair is exceptionally long. She usually keeps it down, with several smaller braids cornrowing the top of head and joining into one huge braid down her back, however she will sometimes curl it into intricate knots at the top of her head if she's feeling festive. If on a job, she will wrap the braid around her shoulder.

Her Windmark covers the left side of her face, delicately curling along her eyelid and around her eyebrow, snaking down her neck, shoulders, and ribcage, and finally wrapping around her hip bone. The mark itself is a rich red in coloration, and notably more lacy along her face, the markings turning more tribal-like near her waist.

Personality

Silnas comes off as being abrasive firstly, and angry right after that. While in truth she's just... incredibly passionate, there is no mistaking that she has a comparatively low temper threshold. Though this has helped her in surviving on her own for so many years, it does make her seem standoffish at the best of times, and quick to anger.

She's also terribly blunt about her feelings, and will not hesitate to tell someone if they are pissing her off or if she views the person as stupid. While this doesn't exactly make her the most beloved bodyguard in existence, she is known for keeping most of her clients alive. Not happy, but certainly alive.

The softness of her character only comes out with her horse, Skytrotter. She has a great love for riding, and the only time that she truly feels at peace is when she's out in the Sea of Grass with nothing but the wind and her horse beneath her. Nothing excites her more than riding out through the plains in the middle of a storm.

Silnas is careful to keep her loyalties tucked away, and will shove people away who try to get close to her, believing herself to be cursed and not wishing to spread it. She is incredibly hostile to Drykas most of all, going out of her way to avoid her own race.

Through it all, she hides the incredible feeling of displacement and sadness that has weighed on Silnas' shoulders for the past three years. She feels as if she cannot belong anywhere, and is a stranger to her own kind.

Character History

For Silnas, nothing in her life is more significant than when she turned thirteen, and woke up screaming from a nightmare.

The nightmare, it seemed, was innocuous and nothing to be concerned about. No one in her Pavilion quite believed her about it. They told her it was the pain from receiving her Windmark that caused it, nothing more. It was a dream and the Drykas only trust what they can touch, but Silnas never forgot the dream.

Within it, the Sea of Grass moved and roiled like the true seas, waves of soil crashing down and breaking the ground. A cat approached her, a typical hunting cat, nothing special about it, except this cat spoke to her. It told her that a curse had fallen on her entire pavilion, and she was powerless to stop what was about to befall her family. The ground beneath her feet turned red, and the cat's face became that of the Ankal, lifeless with blood flowing from his mouth.

Since the dream, Silnas was convinced that her pavilion was in true peril. It became harder for her to concentrate on her training, trying instead to find out the source of the danger to befall her pavilion. She became increasingly hostile to other Drykas, convinced that they were risks to her family. This was causing difficulties within her pavilion, as trading did not go smoothly with her agitating all their partners, until the Ankal ordered her to step down and begin work on what the Amethyst clan was known for, trekking through the Sea of Grass. It was earlier than her mother, the Ankal's second wife, would have liked, but Silnas had little choice in the matter. While her sisters worked on tailoring, Silnas set out to know every inch of the Sea of Grass, which did sate her curiosity. But the dream continued to haunt her.

Two years later, when Silnas came back to her pavilion after a week-long journey, she found a new hunting cat within it. She didn't think much of it, until the cat looked at her, and Silnas realized it was the cat of her nightmare. Her sole brother proudly announced that he bought the best of the litter from a neighboring pavilion, guaranteed to run faster than the Striders and take down glassbeaks and valispar with ease. Silnas begged her brother to be rid of the cat, referring again to her nightmare, but her brother laughed in her face and raised the cat, treating it just as well as his Strider. Tensions escalated when Silnas tried to kill the cat on a rainy evening and her brother caught her, which nearly turned into a brawl until the Ankal intervened. Silnas was ordered to cool her heels, and was banished from the pavilion for a year, in hopes that being so far from her family would help Silnas to clear her mind.

When Silnas returned, she felt that something was wrong. The stench of decay was sweet in the air... and when she walked in, she found herself stepping in blood, and staring into the lifeless eyes of the Ankal. She grabbed her weapons and mounted her Strider, intending to kill who it was who murdered her father... when she found herself staring at her brother.

The curse was never in the cat, it was in her own family. Her brother killed his own father to take his place, and tried to assault the wives of the Ankal, including his own mother. Her sisters, untrained in the art of swordmanship, were losing the battle against their brother. Silnas managed to beat him away, but the damage was done. Their pavilion was cursed, and their neighbors knew what her brother had done... and would not tolerate such a cursed family within their clan.

The attack was brutal, and sudden. Silnas tried to defend the scraps of her family that were left, but she proved to be no match to the three swordsmen who came for them. Only Silnas, her older sister, and her brother's hunting cat escaped. The cat had been named Silnas, and it was on that day that Silnas took the name.

No other pavilion dared to take the cursed girls in, leaving Silnas and her sister to fend for themselves. Silnas had a tough time providing for both of them, and her sister resented Silnas for the deaths of their pavilion. It wasn't much longer when her sister left Silnas, traveling for the coast, intending to sell her Strider and forge a new life. Silnas continued on by herself, soon arriving at Riverfall, where no one knew her or her family. And she found traders, wishing to cross the Sea of Grass to go home, something that Silnas excelled at.

She's worked as a bodyguard for three years, making a decent living, keeping her Strider healthy and happy. It is the last connection she has to the Drykas culture, now an outsider to her own race. She seeks to avenge her family and find her brother, but has yet to find him.
