Nykan Delivery Bureau

Image
Near the center of the Eastern Quarter, there lays a rugged building made of the standard red colored stone that most Nykan buildings are built out of. The Delivery Bureau can easily be mistaken for any other building in Nyka except for the Couriers that can be seen running in and out of its front door at any given point during the day. It is here that news, letters, packages or any other sort of item in need of delivery is distributed throughout the city. Behind the building, there is a fenced in small stable and yard that houses up to five infiks.

Within its walls, one would find neatly organized piles of boxes and packages stacked in corners depending on their destination. On the walls, Shelves hold various letters and scrolls are also organized by their importance and location. The outsider of course would not know the method of which things are sorted and would instantly assume that everything was a cluttered mess.

The majority of the paperwork, sorting, and labeling is the job of the Post Master, Anđelko Mlakar. He also decides which courier takes what to where, tends to the infiks and their training, manages the income, and maintains partnerships with all of the monk fractions of Nyka. He is normally busy at work in the Service Office from sun up to sun down, and lives in the rooms above the main office.

If one wishes to send a package, letter, or message within Nyka they simply have to enter the Bureau and speak directly to Anđelko. They will have to pay the processing fee, and they will have to option to pay the delivery fee as well so that the addressee will not have to pay the courier upon delivery. They would then give the intended delivery to Anđelko and sign a document of confirmation, thus completing the transaction. A delivery can take between one to three days, according to level of importance. The process is much the same for deliveries leaving Nyka, except that paying the delivery fee is mandatory, the delivery time is much longer, and there is a chance that your parcel can be lost or stolen en route. Out of Nyka deliveries are delivered via ship or caravan and can only be delivered to Ravok, Mura, Sunberth, Zeltiva, and Syliras.

NPC
Image Anđelko Mlakar
Anđelko is a human man in his late fifties, he is moderately tall and his body is slightly bulky. He retired from the monks after he became unable to compete with the younger Novices, and continues to work closely with them to ensure the safety of both his business and his couriers. He is a hard man that books no nonsense and is notorious for hitting slacking couriers with the cane he uses to walk from time to time but he is also known to be friendly to those who work hard. Years of working with the stress of the Delivery Bureau has etched lines on his proud face, and due to an old injury he walks with a slight limp. The limp is more noticeable during cold weather. But don’t think him as feeble, he is both skilled in the staff and throwing knives though he prefers to negotiate before having to revert to violence.

Infik

Frequency: Common

Threat Level:
Very Low

Major Features:
Small body, doe eyes

Abilities:
High intelligence, Great speed

Physical Characteristics: Bunchy animals akin to a dwarf antelope, standing at twelve to sixteen inches at the shoulder, with bristly brown fur, a long, slender neck, and large eyes. Their legs, while thin, are extremely strong, capable of propelling them at speeds of twenty-six miles per bell.

Social Structure: Wild Infiks are both socially and sexually monogamous, and organize almost exclusively in pairs. This pair will stake out a territory of about fifteen acres to call their own. Domesticated Infiks take on a humanoid as their partner, and will follow them wherever they go. No matter the partner, the urge to find one starts the minute the animals enter maturity, which is at around eight months. Female Infiks will give birth to a single child twice a year, with gestation often taking between eighty-two and one hundred sixteen days. Children are weaned at two months, and are run out of their parents’ territory not long afterwards.

Misc.: Infiks are bright compared to most creatures, with their intelligence rivaling that of a very clever dog’s. They can follow simple orders, navigate city streets with ease due to a sharp memory and sharper eyesight, locate those who they are familiar with, as well as stereotype people. While that may not seem particularly useful at first, it means that one can order an Infik to “find someone strong” or “bring someone fast” and they will bring the largest or wiriest person they can see, respectively. They can still make mistakes, of course- bringing someone fat instead of someone strong- but it’s still a useful ability. They only use sight to assess individuals, so one wishing to fool an Infik need only mask their appearance. Because of their speed and intellect, Infiks are a preferred courier to many Nykans, and it’s not an uncommon sight at all to see one racing down a crowded street, toting a message strapped to a simple harness. Stopping them is ill-advised. They are borderline harmless, but they do bite.
