[Training] Of cats and birds in raging heat [Mao]

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

She did it. She achieved the element of surprise and fell the beast, tearing open its neck and putting the nails in its coffin by shaking, punishing and effectively splaying its life across the grass. Within a few blinks of the eye it laid strewn all around them, entrails, esophagus, veins, hunks of flesh and blood. But it was just as short-lived as his own triumph, and a million times more fateful.

It had been a bad venture, one borne of an unconscious selfishness that went both ways. He had intended to do wonders for Mao's savage sexual urges by letting her satisfy her lust killing other creatures, as well as to escape the venting of her wrath and violence. He had done something for the good of both of them and it ended as badly as it could have. As he stared at the horrific scene before him, with his beloved bond mate's body slashed and bleeding, he almost lost control of himself. The thought of her safety prevented him from falling in a dead faint, on the event of which she would have surely bled to death in her vulnerable state.

A silent gasp, a muffled cry, escaped his throat, unable to move, to think for a moment. He watched her fall unconscious, possibly lifeless after her triumph, his legs paralyzed into the ground without any measure of strength. That firm, supple body encased in raven fur that he so worshiped and strived to protect from even the tiniest scratch or bruise was lying flat on the ground, barely breathing, almost as dead as he was in the heat of the sun. The possibility of Mao getting hurt, much less dying that day had not even crossed his mind when he planned it. Now it had come roaring down on him, planting white spots into his brain, rendering him motile and helpless.

The tenseness in his muscles fell dramatically, the mouth on his paled face falling open like an unhinged door to oblivion. And when the reality of the situation finally broke through the shock, he wasted no time scooping her up into his arms and running back to Sanctuary as fast as his legs could carry him, his mind crossed with a single, desperate thought: He had to get Kavala.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luckily the konti healer had been around, and the moment Mao was laid on the dining table turned surgeon's table, she worked laboriously to patch the wounded kelvic up while Navis was left to fuss over his stupid decision and pondered, wracked his brains about the real possibility of losing the only woman, the only other being he had ever loved. Unable to bring himself to thrash around the premises and destroy other items in Sanctuary, he fled back to the wilderness, gave into his grief and rage, and proceeded to slaughter whatever he found. He was particularly merciless towards another couple of glassbeaks he found near their hunting spot, ones which were feeding off the remains of their abandoned quarry. Flashing demonic eyes and strength to match, he attacked with little thought for his own safety, brutally killing, dismembering and crushing every single bit of the creatures, a handiwork even more barbaric than the fate which he had laid for his earlier kill.

He returned to Sanctuary during the night carrying the bloody skulls of four butchered glassbeaks, throwing them down into the ground as he burst into the operating room, holding his breath and anticipating the worst.

She pulled through. Kavala was lying asleep on the veranda bench where he usually sleeps when frustrated, and Mao was soundly resting inside their bedroom, her breathing no longer laborious, but mellow and gentle. She was still in jaguar form, which made him sure than she was at least in a stable, normal condition. Tears of relief and joy started falling from his softened eyes as he approached her and buried his face beside nuzzle.

Her jaws being filled with razor sharp teeth be damned for him; he would endure all the biting she'd want to lavish on him as a personal penitence for his foolishness.

"Damn it, kitten... I thought I had lost you." He sniveled in between sobs to her soft, sensitive ear.

[Training] Of cats and birds in raging heat [Mao]

It was foolish of her to believe she wouldn’t get hurt, that battling a glassbeak would prove to be as easy as it was to fell a human, and that she would escape it unharmed. When she had collapsed, the darkness quickly overtook her mind, and she fell unconscious from the lack of blood. The only thing she could vaguely remember was being lifted with strong arms, and the wind caressing her fur as if she drifted on the wind.

She didn’t know how long she had blacked out, only that her body refused to shift into her human form, and the small pricks from Kavala’s fingers were the only thing that penetrated her senses. She dreamt of the grass then, of her first meeting with Navis, of the family that might come to be…or might not, if she did not pull through. But in her mind there was no fear of death, only the slow, steady breaths and then the pain gradually slipping away. There was a warmth to her body that was not there previously, and then the texture of the soft mattress underneath comforted her considerably.

So she was not outside. There would be no vultures feasting on her body that night. Black lids slowly opened as the pale irises of the beast focused and blinked to clear away the blur. There was someone touching her. Navis? A growl escaped Mao’s throat nonetheless. Weak, but still intimidating. His voice caused her ears to shift toward his direction; it was familiar, and it calmed her racing heart. She shifted her paw on the sheets, nearly tearing it in one stroke. Navis… She hissed through her fangs, jerking her head up to look straight into his eyes. Stop your crying… So, weak… So pathetic… I won’t die.

This was the beast that spoke, the far more violent, savage half. She was cruel yet still capable of a heartfelt lick which she promptly gave him, although the pricks that lined her tongue was hardly pleasant. I’m fine… I almost mistook you for Sorian, don’t scare me like that. She gave a feline version of a laugh as she pawed her way up, attempting to lift herself off the bed. The wounds itched and burned furiously and she had to bite back the urge to lick them.

He quit slobbering and wiped away his tears immediately, seeing as her snarkiness told him that she was definitely alright. "What? For shame kitten. Even real men can cry sometimes you know?" Navis snapped, releasing his hold to allow her to roll and romp around on her own. He cast one look at the collar behind him, lying where it had fallen earlier. Some part of him wanted to throw it away, and he seriously considered it for a moment. However seeing that even in jaguar form she was still somewhat vulnerable against some dangerous creatures, he shook the idea off.

Navis turned around and sat quietly on his own, enveloping his arms around his knees in more considerate thinking. Silence began to cover them in the darkness of the room, the Akalak brooding and mulling over his options with calculated abandon. From now on he was not going to let her just endanger herself as such, even if it meant incurring her wrath. It was not worth losing her over. It was a struggle within him to calm himself down, one which only nice words could calm.

An idle hand gently tried to find its way to stroke her fur, a blind mind half-expecting her to slash or tear at it. Whatever the case, it was a hand in plain view in the moonlight, seeking to close a distance which her savagery had made him fear. No more will he fear it. He was going to reach out to her no matter what.

[Training] Of cats and birds in raging heat [Mao]

There was a growl rumbling deep in Mao’s throat at his response. Rarely would he use a specific tone of voice with her, and for the first time she felt a nagging sensation in the back of her mind to comply with him. But the far more stubborn and feisty half got the better of her, and she tore away from the bed sheets and the bed, away form his lingering hand on her fur. She stretched herself out on the floor, ignoring the stabs of pain in her chest and her thigh, and began licking her paw as if grooming was necessary.

I cannot stay cooped up for long, Navis. This place feels like a cage… She stood, pacing around the room in slow strides, eyeing him. I will go out and I will hunt again. I’ll get better, I have to… She trailed off in her thoughts, then moved up and nudged his hand with her nose. Don’t be so worried, it takes more than just a few cuts to take me down. Perhaps it was true, sheer willpower urged her legs forward and her jaws open to tear down an enemy or prey. It wasn’t going to stop now just because wounds had been inflicted on her in a long while. They were deep, but time will heal them and she would become stronger from the experience.

Without another word, she turned and shoved aside the doors with her head. Perhaps glass beaks weren’t on her agenda this time, but something easier for her to surprise. She would wait in the shadows as she once was, and ambush whatever crossed her path. Paws dug deep into the soil as she stepped forward, content with the wind airing out her injuries.

[Training] Of cats and birds in raging heat [Mao]

Before she turned and bolted back out into the wilderness there was that subtle, conniving look again in her face. It had probably become instinctual to him to be able to read her, or maybe it was their bond that permitted him to look at every side and angle of her and recognize what it meant right away. The look tonight said clearly that said she was out to get somebody because she was somewhat pissed and frustrated that she had to end up this way. She was definitely not going to be reckless, no, not after her grueling experience just earlier. But in such a state she was vulnerable.

But no matter what thoughts bombarded him, he remained idle by the bedside for a good hour before adrenalin snapped him to his senses. Her words, they were the only ones that kept on hurling and tussling back and forth inside his cavernous head. "I cannot stay cooped up for long, Navis. This place feels like a cage." It was both a plea and a warning to him, that she was not going to conform to how Kavala wanted things to be. In all honesty he didn't know what to say or what to do; for her to be safe, she has to learn how to be a more docile cat. But it was nigh impossible given her nature.

He got up and started fastening his trousers back on, moving out of the building with a slow, thoughtful stride. These are the thoughts that carried his feet back to the grasslands, where the smell of Mao's skin and her trail lingered like a bait over the place. He had no intention of letting her know that he was moving about following her every move, but he knew that it was impossible to hide from her too.

She was out to get something weaker. Most likely, humans.

When he found her in the hidden spaces between the grass he snuck down and observed in relative ease, willing to let her do as she pleased, but prepared to intervene with full force if there was any threat to her life.
