Character Development Questions

Image

General Information :
1. What is your Name? Cassandra.

2. Do you go by a nickname or pet name? Family calls me Cassie, except for my mother, Echor, who prefers Cassandra. I like Cass.

3. How old are you? Nineteen years.

4. What is your height? Average.

5. What is your weight? It fluctuates, but... above average.
Aesthetics :
1. Describe yourself as you see yourself. I am both physically and mentally strong, with a hard exterior. I paint my eyes with ash and kohl so that others cannot see what lies behind. I care little what covers by body, only that it is covered well. I work hard and tolerate little.

2. Describe yourself as others typically see you. You can tell she is a woman of labor, as much muscle as fat, and she wears herself with confidence enough. She frowns more than she smiles, but it is not difficult to find a kink in her armor. Though perhaps easily offended, she can be generous and even kind when the moon's right.

3. What is your favorite body feature? I like my hands, what they are capable of.

4. How physically fit are you? I am strong from sailing and hauling fishnets, but I am not as lean as cityfolk seem to prefer.

5. How do you typically dress and what is your style? I dress in mostly browns, more function than fashion. I keep my hair up most of the time and choose fabric that will last. Still, I am not above the occasional frill or bauble. I like red and violet colors and I decorate myself in beads and scarves that will last many seasons.
Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like? My mother is a woman named Echor. That was not always her name, but she likes this one better. She reminds me to see the beauty in things, but she doesn't always use the most straightforward language. I think my father is a man named Eddie, but I don't know for sure. I was raised by my whole pod. We do not make blood distinctions.

2. Do you have any brothers or sisters? The only one I know of is a half-brother named Richard, or Richie. All of my cousins are my brothers and sisters. There is also Connor, Maggie, Marina, and Nyla.

3. What is your extended family like? The Southwinds are known for their sense of adventure and courage. We are the flame that burns in the storm, the horizon chasers. Our adventures mostly only apply to the open seas, however, as some of us can be fearful of going too far inland. We befriend natives well enough and we enjoy a good party, but they have taught me that we are better than they. They settle; we live.

4. Do you consider close friends as important as family? My family are my friends. All others are outsiders, and acquaintances at most.

5. Do you treat animals like family? We have Tavan, like any Svefra Pod. Mostly dusky dolphins, with a few others. Mine is named Valory. She is loyal and candid, and she is usually the one who rescues me from myself.
Location :
1. Where were you born? Somewhere off the Western coast of Eyktol, on the Southwind palivar, The Water Phoenix.

2. Where do you live now? On the open seas with the rest of my pod, specifically on a small casinor called The Lioness.

3. If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be? Of all the places I have been, I love the open ocean the most. I am becoming fond of Lhavit, however.

4. Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time? When we have the time, my family makes merry on the closest shoreline. Lhavit's is particularly beautiful, with its watery sunsets.

5. Where do you fear to be? Any place that I cannot leave. Underground.
Traits :
1. Do you have any physical weaknesses? I am not the most fit on my family, and I am poorly trained in combat, but I have earned no crippling wounds.

2. Are you right handed or left handed? Right handed, where my Oceanus mark most often resides.

3. What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent? Fratava is my native language, and I have only recently made a major effort to become fluent in Common. I tend to overemphasize vowels and have a somewhat hollow resonance, like knocking against the hull of a ship.

4. Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics? Some people say that I glare too much, or that I do not talk enough. I like to think that I have no ticks or habits, but I am told that my gestures are sometimes too deliberate and that I can seem false when I don't mean to.

5. Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them) ? My ears are pierced. I have entertained the idea of tattoos, but I am uncomfortable exposing my skin to sharp things. I do have Laviku's first mark, as all Svefra do.
Occupations :
1. What is your occupation? I am a sailor and fisherman.

2. Do you like/dislike your work? Why? I am content with it because I am good at it. It is my connection to my family and the all father, Laviku. It is refreshing, trying, and new every time I go out to sea. But the killing in it has begun to grate on me.

3. If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be? I do not know enough about the other possibilities to prefer anything else. No use in changing a good thing.

4. What occupation do you admire the most? Why? Ship carpentry and construction. I do not know if I could ever produce vessels as great as a Svefra shipwrights.

5. What occupation do you lest like? Why? Most merchants annoy me, especially when I must stand beside them to sell my own wares. It seems so tedious, and more dishonest than anyone should want to be.
Childhood :
1. What sort of child were you? I was quiet and diligent, if not a little foolhardy. More a follower than a leader, I obeyed my elders and removed myself from them otherwise. They say I am an adult now that I have had my blood and slain my first enemy, but I do not feel like a deserve the title.

2. What is your favorite memory from childhood? When I was first learning how to sail, my grandfather, Thom, showed me on his casinor, The Etain. He would quiz me on the parts and techniques, and every time I got one wrong answer he would toss me overboard. He did it to Connor before me and he would do it to Marina and Maggie after. It has become something of a tradition, so that now when someone slips up on the palivar, we make a game out of catching them and throwing them out. Only when the weather allows.

3. What is your worst memory from childhood? When my cousin Maggie fell in love with a Symenestra boy.

4. What sort of relationship did you have with your parents? I love Echor and I respect her, but no more than I do the other women of the Southwind pod. Aunt Mona and Lia Regina have a special and unique place in my heart, as do Eddie, Salty, and Wiley. I think the idea of dual parents is a little archaic, to be honest.

5. Who was your most influential rolemodel? Should anyone ask I would probably say the Southwind pod's Lia. She is strong, intelligent, intuitive, and kind. But I think it might actually be Eddie. He is so good at finding the humor in things and the good in people. He always helps me forget the bad things without trivializing them, and I can only hope to eventually be as insightful as he.
Education :
1. What sort of education do you have? I have no formal education. Everything I know I learned on the sea.

2. Do you like/dislike learning? I learn with my hands. Anything that has to be learned from a book is not worth learning.

3. Where or how did you learn most of your skills/abilities? From my family and my own experience.

4. How do you learn best? By doing. I am frustrated by theory.

5. What are your educational goals for the future? My time in Lhavit has found me interested in the stars, but I do not yet know of the mathematics, theories, divinities, and worlds that lie in wait behind my examining them. I am primed to begin a life of scholarly pursuits, but only if the stars align for that fate.
Intimate Relationships :
1. Do you form close bonds with people? Why? Why not? I do not. We Svefra are greater than cityfolk, and we Southwinds are the greatest of the lot. I have little to learn from those outside my family, and their only use is for a day's distraction or for the money and goods they have to give.

2. Do you trust people easily? If not, why not? No. Trust is something that should be reserved for family. To give it out easily is to treat it with disrespect.

3. Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi, or something else? Men have always seemed superfluous to me. If would not be averse to a man or a child, but I respect women more.

4. Have you ever been kissed? If so, describe the first time. I kissed my cousin Maggie once, when we were young and trying to practice. I have kissed a few men and women in various port cities, but never in a way that was sober or loving.

5. Have you ever had sex? If so, describe the first time. I have not.
Drugs and Alcohol :
1. Have you ever been drunk? If so, describe your first time. I was fourteen, and we had invited some Zeltivans down to the docks for a party. That was also the first time I kissed a boy, and the first time I was propositioned by one.

2. Do you like to drink on a regular basis? Only when it's dark out.

3. What sort of alcohol do you prefer? I like rum and other dark liquors.

4. Have you ever tried drugs (mood altering substances)? If so, which kinds and what did you think of them? I had some Kenashern tobacco once. It was nice, but I prefer drink.

5. What do you think of drugs and alcohol? Be specific. I have little experience with drugs. Alcohol is a part of my life and I drink if often. I have no bad associations with alcohol except for a bit of embarrassment. But I can't say I've never used it to forget, nor am I immune to the violence it stirs in me. Perhaps I am still too young to succumb too deeply to drink.
Likes and Dislikes :
1. What are your hobbies? I spend my time fishing, sailing, or preparing for either of those things. When I am not doing that, I relax most often with a drink in my hand. I have a budding interest in astronomy, however.

2. Do you like to read? There is not much literature in Fratava, and I do not read well enough in Common to enjoy it.

3. What annoys you more than anything else? Frivolity, especially in terms of emotions and their expression. I hate pointless things, especially conversation.

4. What do you find the most relaxing activity to do? Drinking at a shore camp.

5. What kinds of things embarrass you? Why? I do not like to show emotion or be proven wrong. I have a carefully constructed exterior and these things spoil all of that effort. They are, as stated above, frivolous.
Favorites :
1. What is your favorite color or colors? I like reds, violet, and gold--the colors of sunset.

2. What is your favorite time of day? Dusk and the hours just after.

3. What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? The Lhavitian skyline at night, when approached from the southern ocean.

4. What do you like to eat? What do you hate to eat? I like fish, bread, sometimes cheese. I have a distaste for fruit and sweet things, unless they come with liquor.

5. What is your favorite type of weather? Does any kind scare you?The best days are those with a bright sun and a strong wind. I do not scare easily, but a storm at sea can be a terrifying experience in a little casinor.
Outlook :
1. Are you optimistic or pessimistic? I do not think much about the future, but I consider myself a realist. So I suppose I'm a pessimist.

2. What are your religious views? I worship Laviku above all else, but I have begun to think often about the worship and expectations of Dira.

3. Would you be able to kill? I have, once, and it haunts me to this day. I kill fish almost every day, and I struggle with how easy it is to take a life. Killing a person is not something I am proud of, or something I think I could ever do again.

4. What are your views on sex? It is a natural and beautiful thing. I do not resent the intimacy of it, but I have never trusted someone enough to engage in it myself.

5. What, in your opinion, makes a successful life? I live in service to the gods first and my family second. I work hard and always try to improve my skills. In all, I think I have a successful life.
Actions :
1. What is the worst and best thing you’ve ever done? I killed the Symenestra boy my cousin loved so that I could bring her back home.

2. What is your greatest regret? That my life feels defined by his death.

3. What is your best/worst memory? I do not know it yet, but the best thing that ever happened to me was arriving in Lhavit. If my worst memory is not killing that boy, then it is being rewarded for it by my pod.

4. If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be and why? Must we keep going back to this? I would take it back if I could, but I can't. I am more than that moment.

5. What are you the most proud of doing in your life? The first time I sailed in the Lioness on my own, in the narrow seas between Riverfall and Charbosi. It was difficult, but it was flawless.
Emotions :
1. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings with others? Not at all. Most strangers are not worthy of that kind of honesty. But I am not as good at hiding my emotions as I think I am.

2. Do you have any biases or prejudices? I am very proud. My family has taught me that Svefra are better than cityfolk, and Southwinds are better than most Svefra. I am the best of the best, and it is very difficult to convince me otherwise. Those that earn my respect are a special lot indeed, and even they may not hold it forever.

3. What makes you happy? The open sea, the freedom it contains. In my mother's words: Chasing the Horizon. I am also quite fond of drink, and the merriment that often comes with it.

4. Who or what, if anything, would you die for? My family, my Tavan, and my god, the all father Laviku. I hope to die at sea, facing the horizon, on some sort of great final adventure. In fact I think about my death often. Sometimes I think it would be better if I got to choose the exact moment in which I died. I do not want to die in some forest with my throat hanging open, the way the Symenestra boy did.

5. What makes you angry? Plenty of things. Being embarrassed, being frustrated, being looked at the wrong way. Especially when I am drinking. It takes more than anger to make me lash out, however. I do not often answer slights with violence, but I am not entirely against the prospect.
Other Relationships :
1. In general, how do you treat others? With appropriate distance. Even the people I like most learn to appreciate a look instead of a compliment. Respect is hard earned, but I don't mind common courtesy if it doesn't involve too much talking.

2. Who is the most important person in your life, and why? I've never been faced with the decision out loud, but if I were ever forced to choose I would probably say my mother, Echor. Not because she is my blood mother, but because she has influenced me most for the better and I value her opinion above all others.

3. Who is the person you respect the most, and why? Lia Regina. Her word is law; without it we would be cast to the sea. Not that I couldn't survive in the open water.

4. Do you have a spouse or significant other? If not, describe an ideal lover. I don't have a significant other, probably because most of the people I talk to are family. The person I end up with would not need words to speak and will prefer doing things over talking about them. She will be strong in both body and mind, but she will not be afraid to share her weaknesses in private. She will most definitely know their way around a fishing net. She will support me without expecting me to share my feelings, she will not fear death, and she will enjoy a good drink. Eddie says I set high standards so that I don't have to actually settle with any real person.

5. Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why? My pod protects their own. I trust each of them to protect me in the same way the they trust me to protect them.
Group Situations :
1. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict? I don't usually lower myself to argue with people who don't know what they're talking about, which is most people.

2. Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations? Never. At least, only when I have to. In that case there usually aren't many other people involved.

3. Do you like interacting with large groups of people? Why or why not? No. It always seems so shallow, and it drains me to interact with so many people at once.

4. Do you care what others think of you? Ask me out loud and I'll tell you no. But really, yes. Doesn't everyone?

5. What do you think of others, in general? Most people are not as strong as I am, or as adventurous or as intuitive. I don't usually tell them so, but I know it's true. Still, I can occasionally tolerate them, if only to ease the boredom of being alone.
Self Image :
1. What is your greatest strength as a person? I am a hard worker. This means that I learn quickly, I don't tire easily, and I am dutiful to my god and family. It is all anyone can ask of a person.

2. What is your greatest weakness? I am afraid of dying. I know I shouldn't be, but I often feel that my fear is a deep wound that cripples me from doing something great.

3. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I don't like how anxious I get around people. I don't really care about cityfolk or what they think, so it's stupid how my nerves sometimes run so high during a simple conversation.

4. Are you generally introverted or extroverted? Introverted.

5. Are you generally organized or messy? Messy.
Beliefs :
1. What God or Goddess do you find most appealing, if any? I should say Laviku. But sometimes I find myself thinking about Dira, and how exactly a person is meant to worship Her.

2. Which God or Goddess do you fear, if any? I fear and love all of the gods, some more than others. The ones I pray to most are the ones I cherish most, and the ones I fear most.

3. Do you have any Gnosis Marks? If so, how did you receive them? I have Oceanus because I am Svefra.

4. What lengths would you go to please your deity? I believe I go to the proper lengths. I honor Laviku every day with the life I live. I have not ever had a desire or necessity to go further than that.

5. Where do you draw the line at pleasing your deity? What is too much? I have never thought of going to any extreme to please a deity. I hate to admit that very little would probably be too much for me.
Life & Death :
1. What do you absolutely live for? The freedom of the open sea. At least I did, before I discovered the wealth of new knowledge available to me in Lhavit.

2. What is the best part of life? Finding those few special people who really get it.

3. What is the best part of death? I don't know. Death is not a very good thing, is it?

4. If you could choose, how would you want to die? At sea, facing the horizon.

5. What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death? I'd like to have a song written about me, detailing how brave and strong I was. I worry that all anyone will remember me for is saving Maggie, which wasn't even all that difficult. I hope I can do enough that everyone will forget about what happened.
