32nd Winter - Few Bells after Midday.[Forest]

The torrents of rain became less dense by the afternoon - Jayce had relaxed for a drink from his waterskin with Manx, and he felt refreshed in little time at all. If it wasn't for the training earlier, Jayce didn't think he'd be too happy about today (what with Neola being gone and everything), but he felt alive and healthy, so he started twiddling around his sword while he conversed with Manx.

The blonde haired man rubbed at his jaw, the shape of it had prevented most damage, but it still felt slightly painful - it was bruised, according to Manx, who took great pride in the punch. Besides his Jaw, Jayce's shoulders were tired slightly, though it was manageable. His elbow hadn't taken damage after the strike to Manx's legs, but Jayce doubted that either of them were actually very injured. At any rate, he felt better after the spar, like he'd learned something about real fighting.

He'd taken his armour off, though he was sitting besides his chestplate and shield. Because it was raining, the clouds overcast darkness on their campsite, which was situated at the border to a seemingly endless forest. The winter sun struggled to shine through the blackened above, and as he turned his head from side to side, Jayce thought he could see shadows approaching.

If at all he tried to gaze into the mass of trees behind him, the dark clouded his vision like an illusion. He tried not to look towards the wooded area, though paranoia fell on him, as if his survival instincts forced him to keep watch of the area. He turned to Manx for comfort, risking turning his back on the place, and started talking to him - he would occasionally glance back however, just in case.

"I don't like that forest." It was a simple statement, but he could almost see the agreement on the Inarta's face. "I wish we didn't have to go through it."

Jayce wondered where Neola actually went - hopefully she didn't go into the forest on her own, maybe she ventured across the plains in search of a rabbit or something. The wind was picking up, blowing cold water into Jayce's eyes which caused him to turn around and face the forest. He had to keep wiping his eyes to hold the water at bay, but eventually he realised the futility in that action, so he stopped and rested his arms on his lap - still gazing intently on the entrance to the wooded nightmare.

Convenient Sparring Timing.

Manx leaned against the trunk of a tree, hoping that some of the falling rain would be caught up in it's boughs. He didn't totally trust the tree though and was in-fact wearing his leather jacket and leather hood, with the hood drawn up over his head. His hair had been scooped from behind his head and now fell down over both shoulders, the very top of his leather jacket was open to allow space for the hair to fall comfortably. Stood quite nonchalantly with his shoulder against the tree, Manx was in all of his gear - his greaves were tied beneath his Bryda this time but he kept his vambraces on top of the valuable jacket that he had taken a liking to. His weapons harness was strewn across his back and his chest, holding his bow and his hatchet quite tightly to his form so that they didn't impede his movements.

Manx's right hand was bare, his left clad in metal that was extremely cold to both touch and look at - with wicked blades extending down the back of the knuckles. This hand was, quite obviously, on-top of the right because Manx stood with his arms crossed in a particularly surly manner.

Just out of the corner of his eye, Manx seemed to catch Jayce looking backwards at the dense forest behind him and cocked an eyebrow. The reason for this became apparent to Manx as Jayce turned to him and said "I don't like this forest." and "I wish we didn't have to go through it."
Jayce looked quite worried and seeking sympathy but Manx struggled to give him any. "Why don't you like it?" he offered after a moment pondering what to say. "It's only trees and dirt." Manx said in an attempt to prove his worries wrong. "And the occasional wild animal.", he noted without really thinking of what he was saying.

As if reminding himself of the conditions he was in by futilely attempting to comfort Jayce, Manx looked down at the damp ground - quite amazed that it still held rigidity in such weather. Feeling his focus being drawn upwards, Manx looked up at the cloudy sky, grey clouds backed by a grey sky with naught but an occasional ray of a pale sun made his empathize with Jayce's feeling some more. Looking back into the thick forest for another attempt to understand why Jayce didn't like it didn't help much. Manx could see the occasional rustle - which was real - and the occasional shadow drifting about in the dark - which was not - he tried thinking of the forest less bluntly but to no avail.

'Maybe Jayce was a wuss ' he pondered as an afterthought.

As the sky cleared and the rain dried up an eerie quite would fall over the pair as they walked. The hush fell over the small forest, with seemingly not a sound to be heard in the immediate vicinity. No birds chirped, no insects made noises, even the occasional pitter patter of rain falling from the leaves of the trees was muted. It was both peaceful and yet it would feel unnatural at the same time.

This peace and quite was broken by a loud shriek that sounded in this distance, which was followed by several other similar cries. The cries were indiscernible until they sounded just a little too close for comfort. Once they could be made out the sound would be chillingly distinctive, one that many travelers throughout Mizahar had come to dread. A form of beast seeming spawned from the ground beneath the their feet.

"Yuk! Yuk! Yuuuk!"

The sound screeched through the trees not far up ahead and was drawing closer to their location, judging by the sounds there was definitely more than one. They still had time of they hurried to try and conceal themselves, the question was whether or not they could handle what was to come? The fierce and unseen monsters beyond the trees were drawing closer and closer, eventually their outlines could be seen and their distinctive cry was unbearably loud.

"Yuk! Yuk! Yuuuk!"

How would the brave adventurers handle this certainly dire situation?

Convenient Sparring Timing.

The artisan's son had no idea how he'd come to be wandering through the forest, it was as if he was drawn to it by something of a greater power. He'd been sat by the ashes of his all too comfortable fire, only chimes ago. Unfortunately, Jayce darted his eyes around to find Yukmen approaching - doom was imminent.

As their unmizaharly cries bore deep into Jayce's skull, he felt the fear taking control of his body. He hadn't been in a situation so unfavourably grim. The severity of the matter caused Jayce to panic, and he found himself locking eyes with the more forward Yukman and allowing it to approach. He remained in that position for a while, stunned and unable to comprehend what was happening to him.

It felt so unreal to Jayce; he'd not fought a person before, never mind a gathering of Yukmen! The dark of the canopy overhead and the clouds that still remained became too much for Jayce. He could not see their wretched bodies properly (Whether a good thing or a bad thing), and even more threatening to him was that he couldn't make out how many there were.

He'd brought his full array of weapons and armour, luckily, and grasped his sword's hilt tightly as he unsheathed the metal. He fastened his shield and tightened his breastplate, preparing for the onslaught. As they neared, his thoughts were of Zeltiva, of Melchior and Alexander and Scarlett, who would all be missing him now. 'No', he thought, 'I can't think like that - I'm going to make it to Syliras'.

It was then that the idea hit him, he started running in the direction of the Yukmen; he closed the short distance away from them and managed to stay in line with their flank. He'd grabbed Manx before doing this, and pulled him behind the cover of a similarly large tree beside him, where together they waited.

If a Yukman was to shamble around the tree into his view, he'd certainly impale it, giving him the edge for the fight to come. With his shield covering his left side from any attacks, he felt confident in his plan. He only hoped that Manx had the wit to pick some of them off with his arrows.

All kinds of thoughts raced through Jayce's mind, the most disturbing of which was, 'What if they didn't want to hurt me? What if I've just made them angry?' He prayed to the gods that he was wrong, and likewise for mercy and strength in the oncoming battle.

It emerged all too quickly! Shambling around the trunk of the tree and straight into Jayce's line of sight unexpectedly. He looked for a place to strike, though the beast's body was laden with crystals, rocks and miscellaneous bits of Earth it had accumulated at birth. Finally, he saw where he'd attack.

'Please, guys', was his last thought to the Gods, before he delved his steel broadsword deep into an opening on a Yukman's twisted back. 'Please'.

Hearing the feral sounding screams from afar, a few things happened within Manx's brain. The blood of his people, the Inarta, that spent most of their time every day working their hardest to survive attempted to take over his thoughts and drive him towards the end outcome of him still being alive. His mind still clung to the fact that he had to look out for Jayce as well as this point and Manx turned to him with a very stern expression.

When Jayce began running towards the Yukmen, Manx was confused - he expected him to be more afraid of the screams and definitely not rush headlong into them. When Jayce reached out to take a hold of Manx, he had already stepped away and began running into the denser forest next to them both. He tried to keep a number of trees between himself and the un-seen Yukmen and he caught sight of Jayce who stopped behind a particularly large trunk.

Reaching back with his left hand, Manx gripped a hold of his bow handle and pushed it further onto his back at first to unhook the string from his harness - he then swung it down off of his shoulder by moving his body and wrist away from one another. With his right hand, Manx grabbed an arrow from his quiver and quickly placed it to the string. Knocking the arrow and wrapping his left index finger over it's shaft loosely to hold it still to the frame - Manx turned his attention back to Jayce. Having to search the woodland before him for just a second, checking he was still concealed by the large tree.

Manx lowered himself into a crouch then, attempting to steady his breathing and make less noise - listening to his surroundings. He turned around from Jayce and carefully poked his head out of the other side of the tree-trunk. Only seeing through one eye, Manx surveyed the surprisingly quiet brushes and trees in-front of him: waiting for any sign of movement.
