Distractions

20th of Winter, 513 AV

It felt like all she'd been doing was tossing and turning under the covers. Liana rolled over again, peering out the window into the darkness that blanketed Zeltiva. A few chimes of sleep had been snatched here and there, perhaps even a bell at one point, but she was wide awake once more. For as long as she could concentrate on the muffled sounds, the restless Konti listened to the noises of movement throughout the inn. An occasional thump or scrape, a door closing, faint laughter, or a whisper of cloth as someone jogged down the hall in front of her door. If Liana were home and unable to sleep she and her sisters would huddle together and talk all through the night, or until their mother found them awake and chased them all back to bed. She could hear the giggles in her head.

The Konti sighed and kneaded her eyes with the heels of her hands. It was no use trying to sleep tonight. She sat up and threw the covers off, shivering when her bare toes touched the cold hardwood floor. Liana stood and stretched her arms up high, groaning as her muscles shivered in delicious protest down her spine. She fetched the cloak folded over the back of the chair by the window and wrapped it around her naked shoulders. It was cool in her room, but not terribly so. Liana peered out the glass to the distant buildings and dark waters. Ships bobbed anchored in the bay and lanterns moved through the night, across the docks, over the decks, and through the streets. The night owls were up and about. She wondered what sort of business was done in this city at night.

Her nose brushed the glass and she focused on three figures passing the inn, a light swinging between them as they talked and laughed among each other. A desire to go out suddenly popped to mind, but she quickly banished the silly idea. It had been terrifying during daylight when she arrived earlier today, let alone in the middle of the night. There was so much going on, and she'd been overwhelmed until the Wave Guard named Ricky had practically rescued her from the crowd. Liana's ears grew hot with embarrassment just remembering how foolish she'd been, bursting into tears and being hopelessly lost right off the docks. Her mother would probably be saying something along the lines of I told you so. Shaking her head, she turned from the window and meandered over to the mirror hanging on the wall. Liana looked tired and defeated. I've given up and exposed my belly already.

Her reflection glared at her. Coward, she accused herself acidly. You've dreamed of this day for years, and now that it's here you're petrified. You'd think Zeltiva was the orca and you were the seal pup. Frustrated, she raked her fingers through her hair. Before she turned to go back to bed though, she frowned at her reflection. "You can do something instead of stare at the ceiling and roll around." Carefully, Liana pulled the mirror off the wall from where it hung. It was heavy and she stumbled sideways, nearly tipping over, but caught herself as she bumped into the bed. With a grunt of relief Liana laid the mirror on the floor, propping it against the wall. She sat down in front of it, crossing her legs comfortably and pulling her cloak tight around her.

Distractions

She hadn't even unpacked yet. Her backpack lay next the bed beside her, stuffed and loaded down with her belongings. Liana pulled it closer and fished around inside until her fingers touched wood teeth. She pulled out her comb and nudged the bag away. Unpacking could wait. Her clothes lay discarded on the floor as well, but she made sure to ignore them. Never in her life had she been so messy and unorganized. Her mother would come down on her life a hurricane if she saw any of it; clothing unfolded and belongings not put away properly. Liana pulled all of her long hang over one shoulder and ran fingers through it a few times over. It was thick and shiny even in the dark, soft the touch and with the smell of the sea. Carefully, starting at the bottom, she began to comb it. All the while Liana took turns watching her reflection and then the comb. Up and down, up and down, gently detangle an end, up and down again.

With her curls were smooth and gleaming she set the comb down and stroked the blonde waterfall fondly. She and her sisters all had the same hair. Exact same color, exact same texture. Their mother's was even softer. Liana scooted closer to the mirror and leaned down toward her reflection. Fingers touched her cheeks, her lips, ears, and nose. She pinched her skin and pulled it experimentally, stretching her slightly chubby face into a goofy expression. She really needed to sleep, but an idea was forming. The least Liana could do was entertain herself until fatigue finally took her. Smiling now, the Konti closed her eyes and continued to run fingers through the tumble of blonde waves spilling over her shoulder and down her chest. Unsurprisingly, it was hard to relax and clear her mind. Normally there was little effort involved, but the stress from the trip had her muscles tight and her mind tumultuous like a storm.

Liana's eyebrows furrowed with frustration but she quickly chastised herself and forced her face to relax first. She breathed in slow and deep through her nose, held a moment, then carefully released through her mouth. For several chimes she worked on concentrating her breathing like this, getting into a steady rhythm that finally began to effect the rest of her body. First her shoulders sagged and her hands stilled, still in her hair. It spread down her back, easing the tension that had the muscles so tense. Like a cozy campfire, warm and calm slowly spread through her body from the epicenter focused inside her chest. Her heart rate slowed and finally the distracting thoughts left her mind. Storm clouds parted and the waters began to still until her mind was smooth and undisturbed. This was familiar. She was the same, only in a different place.

Blue eyes opened just enough to see her reflection. Liana could see the difference. Her face was relaxed and smooth. No tightness around her lips or wrinkling between the eyebrows and on her forehead. Instead of frowning her mouth was a flat, calm line; neither disturb nor undisturbed. Another breath filled her lungs and escaped through a partially opened mouth. She closed her eyes again and turned her gaze inward. Djed flickered like a candle in an empty room, bright and impossible to miss when one knew how and where to look. It was her, but her in the purest and most essential form. Powerful and pulsing, moving and swirling like the ocean against the shore it beat inside her. For a moment that felt like bells but was nary a chime she merely admired the consistent force.

Liana didn't want to do anything drastic. Only simple alterations to pass the time and keep her mind off the past, present, and future. Like carefully excavating through sand on the beach the Konti searched for the right pieces. She didn't have to go deep when all that was to change were some simple textures and colors, not any real sort of structure like bones or cartilage. With fingers that weren't really quite there, she sifted through the energy, massaging and coaxing. The djed molded and took shape so she could grab and carefully pull. Her long blonde hair shivered in response, slowly receding away and tickling faintly as Liana fed the energy through her fingertips. Before the last of it disappeared she let the djed escape her grasp and settle once more into place. She examined it closely, working with the color for a moment. It need not be perfect, but she twisted and mixed until once pale hair was now dark and shaggy, cropped close like a man's.
