Character ConceptDerian is smart, witty, and quick with both thoughts and feet. He is a skilled fighter, and his prowess in combat is one to be reckoned with. He enjoys drinking, and fucking, and fighting above nothing else. As clever and witty as he is, he remains mysterious, rarely talking of his past.
Character HistoryDerian's mother died when he left her womb, and his father was a Jackal, who died in combat at the age of thirteen. His teenage years were spent swinging around a sword haplessly, living in many different inns while his father did his duty as part of the city watch. He befriended two other boys his age, and the three aspired to become like their fathers, all of whom were Jackals. It was a stint in The Pavilion that got Derian's father killed, after the boys stole bread and were chased by the city watch. His father attempted to stop the pursuit, though his comrades saw him as a traitor and drove spears through his chest.
Furious, Derian no longer pursued the same ambition as his friends, and became an outsider of the group. He hated the Jackals as much as he hated the city, and nothing pleased him more than the thought of leaving. But, being a teenager with no income, who fought other boys in the street to merit coin from the crowds; he could not. He earned just enough to buy a loaf of bread and water every few days, and the rest of the time was spent trying to earn those delicacies. It was the constant fighting that grew on him, and he soon knew his calling in life: bringing pain. Void of mother and father, he had nowhere to go, and one day was caught fighting by the Jackals. They sent him into slavery, and soon a young Derian was bought as a Kefasha to a rich family.
Under their employ, he worked for three, long, gruelling years. No time to train, no time to fight. Derian felt like had become almost sterile, passive, deprived of any urges to do battle with others. He swept, he scrubbed, he did whatever he was needed too. But he never fought. That is, until three bandits attacked the family as they travelled through Ahnatep during the night. They killed the mother, though were defeated by Derian, who used a rock to beat the brains from one, then used his sword to slice the innards from the other two. Despite the death of one of his masters, he became exalted by both father and son, who began to respect him and his skills in combat. They named him a free man, and Derian, now sixteen, left to resume his life in the streets.
Soon, Derian met Aleena, a Sabine. The two immediately became infatuated, and Aleena took Derian into her household. Her father was a Jackal as his had been, though Derian saw something in her father he had never seen in a Jackal; compassion. For his daughter, his two sons, and for life itself. He respected everything and everyone. With faith in the city watch restored, Derian gained a position as a Fox, a general foot soldier of the city. He was tasked with patrolling the streets, and disarming and scaring off any who did wrong. He enjoyed his duty, and earned enough pay to live life comfortably.
However, life took another wrong turn when Aleena's father lost a son to a fever, and became a recluse, never leaving the house. He began to take his anger out on Aleena through physical brutality, which angered Derian. Without thinking, he stabbed the man six times in the chest, right before his Sabine and her younger brother. Knowing his time as a fox, and with Aleena, was over, he fled, taking up the name ''Archton'' and living as a sellsword. Only those who recognise him, which are few, know him as Derian. He still longs for Aleena, and to be in her arms once again. But Derian knows that will never happen; for she will never forgive him.
