Cassius Cruz

Appearance

Race: Mixed Breed (Svefra/Myrian)
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Birthday: 23rd of Spring, 493 AV
Birthplace: Suvan Sea

Appearance: Cassius is a nearly perfect blend of the two separate halves of his ancestry. He stands at 6'2", with broad shoulders, and a powerful frame. His face is that of a Myrian, his caramel-touched skin and thick lips immediately giving him away as a mixed breed. However, he is slightly lighter of skin than most Myrians, and his cheekbones and other features are more similar to those of the Svefra. In his quest for acceptance among his people, Cassius has adopted the traditional Svefra hair style of dreadlocks and a beard, though he lacks the ability to grow it out as long as a full blooded Svefra. Cassius was born with heterochromia, which is one of the biggest dividers between himself and the rest of his people; whereas all Svefra are supposed to have blue eyes, Cassius has one eye of blue, and one of shimmering gold. This is a source of great shame for Cassius, as it is a consistent reminder that he is different from the rest of his kin.

Character Concept

Though the Svefra don't openly despise Cassius, they don't particularly approach him with open arms either. Cassius' kin are just fine with the fact that he is a half blood, but they do not believe him to be capable of being a true Svefra sailor, and thus, they do not believe he is one of Laviku's chosen people. Cassius somewhat agrees with this, as he is well aware that he lacks many of the defining traits that most Svefra are born with, but he does not believe that Laviku would refuse him as one of his children. As such, Cassius worships Laviku in his own way: through reimancy.

Cassius believes that if he cannot gain Laviku's favor through mastering the sea with a ship, he will have to do it with his own two hands. When questioned on the topic, Cassius will often respond,"Laviku is the god of the sea, not the god of fishing boats. If one man can control an entire ocean, how couldn't Laviku respect him?"

Though quite serious about his studies and his quest for acceptance, Cassius is typically quite jovial, if a bit reserved. He typically spends his time meditating on his place in the world and other such mysteries, or out exploring the Zeltivan city life with friends. One would never guess that such an intelligent and well put together young man had Myrian blood.

Cassius rejects all affiliation with the Myrians, hating them maliciously for what was done to his family. He hopes one day to return to the Suvan Sea as an equal to his people, making up for his lack of sailing skill with a mastery of the seas themselves.

Character History

Cassius is a child born of large scale death and pain. Cassius' parents were members of the Oceangem pod, who at the time, were passing through the Southern Suvan near the coast of Falyndar. Suddenly, a massive storm blew in, seemingly out of nowhere, and the resulting waves were enough to bring one of the pod's ships close enough to the shore to smash into a coral reef. The ship unusable, the occupants, the Cruz family included, were forced to evacuate to the shore until another of the pod could safely navigate close enough to rescue them. As the storm raged on, and the ships continued to falter just out of swimming distance, nearby Myrians were quite aware of the Svefra invaders. Believing them to be pirates, the bloodthirsty cannibals set upon the stranded inhabitants of the sunken ship, slaughtering the Oceangems en masse. The men were killed outright, while the women were raped until the Myrian men were satisfied, then they were murdered as well. Only a few of the women survived as the other Oceangems abandoned ship to assist their fallen comrades. The battle was vicious, the storm raging as the blood spilled, Myrian and Svefra both. In the end, the Oceangems were victorious, sporting only minor casualties, not including those who were stranded and slaughtered. Of the few that remained, all had been raped, but only one carried the child to full term: Lysa Cruz. Lysa believed that any wasted Svefra blood was an affront to Laviku, that any with the blood of a Svefra was considered sacred to Laviku. Thus, Cassius, the mixed breed, was born.

Cassius had a rough childhood among the members of his pod. The other children were so much more talented than he was, their nets always coming up full, but his always coming up empty. This, along with his mixed heritage and heterochromia, made him an outcast among his peers, a nearly useless mockery among the Oceangems. As time progressed, Cassius became more accepted, and even well liked by his podmates, but the pity remained. Though he was accepted as family, he was never an equal, much like the guest who is always invited to dinner, but then shooed out the door at the end of the night. He feared his people would never see him as a child of Laviku, the one thing he truly desired to be.

However, Cassius did have an escape: books. The Svefra often have no use for books, as there is no room for a library on a ship, but Cassius made sure to pick up a new book or two on every visit to the shore. At first it was fantasy, stories of knights in shining armor, and damsels in distress. Then it was nonfiction, tales of adventure and sacrifice. Always, he was fascinated with the use of magic, the bending of the world to one's will. To Cassius, the ability to control magic seemed divine of its own accord. That was when he decided that he would please Laviku not through mastery of the sails, but by mastery of the very oceans themselves. Announcing his goals to his mother, who had always been by his side through dark times, Cassius left his pod behind; a dishonor to be sure, but one he hoped one day to return in full by ascending to Laviku's acceptance as an honest to truth Svefra.
