A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

High Spirits Distillery

The readily available corns and wheat in Sylira long ago led to the discovery that the grown plants could be used for more than just food. Though most corns can be used, the Ravokians have a proclivity for using barley, or more specifically, malted barley, in order to create whiskies and malted whiskies. Because of the available resources, Ravok does not need to trade with other cities in order to get what is required; therefore the distillery has the luxury of creating barrels of whisky without worrying about the exhaustion of resources. Due to the crop's resilience, barley can also grow in all seasons, due to the fact that Rhysol invariably gifts Ravok with a mild winter season.

ImageFound on the mainland, not more than a mile along the Lakeshore from the stables, workers generally share shifts over a couple of days before returning to Ravok for a number of days off, due to the number of bells that it would take them to commute, though some workers have been known to travel daily to the distillery.

A relatively large building, it is distinctive for its proportionally large windows, allowing natural light to stream through; open fires are not permitted within the distillery, other than for the distillation, lest one grow out of control or come into contact with the extremely flammable alcohol. The rooms within the building are sectioned, depending on the stage of production. Large copper pot stills fill one room, which are each heated up to boiling points, separating the whisky. The stills are old, worn through constant use, and not the most aesthetically pleasing, with signs of staining and wear-and-tear on each of them. But the workers at the distillery have not yet had a single complaint about the reliable apparatus and so the owner finds no reason to pay to have the expensive apparatus replaced.

Other rooms are primarily filled with charred wooden casks, some of which are empty, but most are filled with the distilled whisky. Some casks have been sitting in the distillery for years, as bottling a whisky immediately does not allow it to age. Casks are, therefore, carefully stored upon many rows of shelves for anywhere between twelve and forty seasons, before being bottled loaded onto ships and sent to the various taverns in Ravok for sale to citizens and guests to the city.

All bottles of whisky hold an estimated amount of 1.3 pints. Only bottles are sent into Ravok. For exportation to other cities for trade, kegs of an estimated 36 gallons of the distilled alcohol are transported, and the Distillery will only transport kegs which have either been sent out immediately after distillation, or have been aged for 24 Seasons. Drams are the unit in which the whisky is served to citizens in small tumblers, a single dram is about a finger deep.

Hadrias
Hadrias Fenton
Age: 65
Job Title: Owner & Distiller

48 - Bodybuilding
76 - Distillation
29 - Herbalism
52 - Leadership
45 - Philtering

As the grandson of the creator of the Distillery, the ownership of Once Brewed skipped a generation to Hadrias, little more than twenty years ago. His grandfather, a believer in traditionalism, did not think it appropriate for a woman to own a business, much less have that business be a distillery for alcohols. Thus his daughter, and Hadrias’ mother, was passed over for the honour of running Ravok’s own distillery.

Having known his destiny long ago, Hadrias began working at the distillery at a very young age, watching the workers and shadowing his grandfather until, when he was older, his grandfather set him to work moving kegs, some empty but most filled with the strong-scented whiskies, from the chamber filled with the stills to shelves ready for storage. Hadrias’ grandfather was a strong believer in a good work ethic and forced Hadrias to work throughout the day, never letting him off just because he was to inherit the Distillery. As such, the old man continues to chip in where needed, even though he no longer has his grandfather ordering him to do so.

Gentner
Gentner Blake
Age: 36
Job Title: Distiller

35 - Bartending
26 - Bodybuilding
52 - Distillation
19 - Philtering
24 - Singing

A previous employee from The Malt House, Gentner hung up his towel after ten years service as a bartender in order to pursue a different career, on which might offer him a little more of a challenge. He found it difficult at first; the long bells away from his beloved lake-city, which more often than not spanned into days. And the journeys to and from the distillery were not his favourite times either, having always suffered from nauseousness when on water, even a lake as still and calm as this one.

But Gentner soon settled into his job and managed to succeed at must jobs thrown in his direction. Often, his voice can be heard as he sings, hums or whistles his way through the day and, whilst his voice is by no means that of a minstrel, his music had the ability to lift the spirits of his fellow workers. He was soon away from the lackey jobs of shifting barrels and is now learning the finer art of distillation from the distillery owner. Hadrias would never admit it, but - as he himself has no sons or heirs - he hopes that, some day, Gentner will take over from him when the time comes. Though he prays to Rhysol that that day will not come any time soon.
