Piraen & Uleru
The 15th of Spring, 510 AV
Midday, the Suvan coast near Alvadas

Piraen flailed about obnoxiously. His chestnut wings flapped and fluttered with great conviction. However, the young kelvic raptor just could not reach the ground. While other young birds were learning to take flight and leave the ground far behind, Pi was struggling to stay with it.

Great. His wings slumped towards the ground in defeat. Stuck. Pi looked at the ground longingly. A long pathetic caw fell from his beak as he hung upside down from a branch. If his eyes could move in their sockets, they'd be rolling in annoyance. He had been trying to better his flying skills when he had gotten jammed into a crevice in the large branch. In actuality, 'gotten jammed' wasn't the most accurate description. It was more like 'punched his talons into the tree and forced himself to get stuck in the ensuing hole." Apparently, one isn't supposed try to land at high speeds. Go figure.

"One more try," Piraen half-heartedly decided."Then I eat my leg off." Shaking vigorously, the kite kelvic tried once more to pull himself out of the tree. He wiggled every which-way and flapped his wings spastically.

The branch bowed from all the stress, finally deciding to free the year-old boy from its grasp. Piraen dropped quickly. Miraculously, he only hit one small branch on the way down. He let out a scream of excitement. This was more fun than his mother would ever let him have!

Adrenaline pulsed through Pi as his new-found freedom reinvigorated his moral. Grabbing a talon full of leaves, the raptor flew over the sandy beach of the coast. He shot up into the air and then released the thin strips of vegetation. Pi let out a screech of joy as he tucked in his wings, plummeting down after the leaves. As he passed them, he grabbed the leaves. Taking his prizes in his beak and talons, Piraen soared back up towards the sky before dropping the leaves once more.

"Petch!" Pi muttered under his breath as he shot by one of the leaves. It floated to the surface of the water. The bird readjusted his course, slowing as he coasted over the water. He didn't want to get too close...his mother never showed him how to swim. Instead, she was too preoccupied with making sure he knew how to lie and steal. Those were clearly much more important skills for a young boy to learn.

OOCToddler-Pi, for your reference. :)

Uleru eyes the hawks progression from just below the surface. Watching as the bird flies a few feet above the calm blue waters. There is a glint in her eye that sailors have learned to fear, and makes dockmen hide their wares. It's not a malicious look, not vindictive, and not hostile. The glint in her eye and the sideways smile on her lips is a sign of pure, unadulterated fun. She's playing a game. The most loathsome of all Otani shenanigans.

The game she is playing is simple. And though it's best played with two competing players, playing by yourself is still quite satisfying.

She takes a guess as to the birds trajectory and lets go of some of her buoyancy, making her sink a few meters below untill the hawk is no more than a blurry patch of dark sky. Then she starts to count down in her head as the raptor circles closer. The timing is crucial, a second meaning the difference between success and agonizing, feathery failure. Closer. Closer...

Suddenly the Otani takes off towards the surface. She pumps at the water with a powerful seals tail, eyes latched onto the dark patch as it's profile sharpens. Suddenly, and with a drenching spray of water, the Otani breaks the surface and leaps into the air. A sparkling, translucent hand is pulled back and already flies towards the bird in a wide arc.

WHACK!

The heel of her hand connects with something, launching the bird across the water in a volleyball-like serve.

"Aha!" she shrieks in victory, falling back into the water with both hands thrown up in the air, "ten points!"

Piraen drew closer to the stray leaf, smiling internally. Nothing can escape me. If a bird could laugh maniacally, then Pi would be cackling. His fun, however, was interrupted: just as he reached out with his tiny talons, a force smashed into his side. Piraen squawked as pain branched out all along his right wing. What had hit him? He hadn't seen anything but water and leaves...was it a distant cousin of his play-things, a dire monster-leaf here to avenge it's drowned friends?

Pi swirled through the air, attempting to find his assailant. Just as he thought he had found an outline of a woman on the water, the raptor crashed into the sea. He began to let out a screech of surprise, but was cut off as he sank below the surface. He had forgotten to fly. Out of all the things in the world, Pi had forgotten to fly; his biggest defense in the world, and he preferred to spin through the air and calculate the odds of a Talderian tree branch attacking him!

I'm going to die. Piraen began to thrash. His wings were doing him absolutely no good now. They were obviously built for substances that were much more weightless than water. In an instant, Piraen had shifted back to his human form; perhaps a boy's arms were more suited for drowning? One could ever be sure. He wiggled in the liquid. Unfortunately, he only found himself sinking faster. This is how I die.

Uleru's eyes are still trained skyward, searching for her next victim, when she feels the vibrations shuddering through the water like a quaking otter. The moulding is not too fussed about it. It could be a fisherman close by has caught himself a fish, or a predator has pulled a trashing eel from its home.

It's only when the vibrations go from the size of large rat, to large seal, that she starts in surprise. Whatever is in the water has just changed size, shape and strength in less than a second. She herself can manage two of the criteria, but this thing can do all three? What the void is in the water with her?!

Dipping below the surface with wide eyes the Otani casts around in the clear depths for the source of the sensory noise. And what she sees makes her question her own senses. A squirming, naked child is clawing desperately towards the surface. Appearing out of nowhere, as if he sprung from the ocean floor like a lichen.

Compelled to save him for the enigma alone, the moulding swims in to help. Weathering the flailing limbs she wedges her hip between his legs and snakes her arm around his waist. And like this she buoys herself up and treads water with her tail, managing to raise him chest-high from the water. Though she can only manage to raise her eyes above water level. But with them she searches the child's face like it's an interesting puzzle, their intensity making her whole body leech into a curious blue.

Lying, stealing, showboating...yes. Swimming? No. Piraen cursed his mother and her poor choice in teachings. At what point had she decided that being able to be "sociably acceptable" at a party was more important than being able to swim?! Pi grimaced under the water, his flails slowing to short, spastic bursts. At least he would die in a manner that was fashionable...or as fashionable as a naked seven year old could be.

Just as Pi began to count the number of ways he could terrorize his mother in the afterlife, an upward rush pushed him to the surface. At first, the boy wondered if he had just died and this was what passing on felt like. After a quick tick or two, though, Piraen realized what was happening: he was being saved. Unsure as to what exactly was helping him, the kelvic youngling began to thrash once more. His fingers clawed at the liquid around him, his hands grabbed handfuls of water. A tight face of pure focus glued to his face as he fought against his fluid opponent with new-found energy.

Piraen still flailed as he broke the sea's surface. The world sparked, greeting him with a violent flash of colors. Flowers and plants on the shore broke out with bright blues, purples and reds. Other creatures shot by, blurring their ultraviolet yellows across the scenery. This was nothing new to Pi; he had always been able to pick up on ultraviolet rays. It was his genetics thrusting the raptor in him to the surface, reminding him every moment of his life that he wasn't like the rest. Nevertheless, the contrast between the dark of the water and the world was shocking. Never before had he seen the world become so radiantly itself. And though it was beautiful, it was also painful. Piraen blinked his eyes rapidly for a few moments, attempting to save himself from blindness.

Sharp little fingernails rake across Uleru's face. And small feet beat against her torso with a drum tempo, forcing the air to eject from her chest in gusts of annoyed bubbles. Part of her wants to shake the child by the shoulders like a maraca and demand he calms down. The other part, the part that mimics humanity so perfectly, wants to cradle him and coo gentle motherly reassurances at him. Thankfully the thrashing stops before she can inflict either of these options on him.

His dark eyes are wide with the sticky aftermath of terror, his lips parted as he sucks in huge lungfuls of air. He blinks hard a few times. Uleru supposes Syna might be too bright after the filtered light below. But he seems to have calmed down now, and the Otani feels it'll be safe to tow him back to shore without risk of accidentally drowning him or losing parts of her own face.

Still buoyed up by her hip, the Otani lets him ride on her side as she makes long, steady strokes back to the green shore. Tiny fish part for them and the calm waters lap gently at the boy's skinny chest. Finally the rocky bottom rises to meet them. Uleru goes as far as she can fit comfortably, so about the time where the boy's toes would be scraping the sand she suddenly sits up, detangling herself from her little passenger.

She beams at him. Taking him in from his mess of dark hair to his suspiciously clean feet. He looks oddly normal. And isn't that the most ironic statement.

She wont let him get away until he explains himself though, so she keeps her fingers twisted around his skinny wrist.

"Hello", she coos like a dove, her eyes alight. "Arn't you a strange little thing. My name is Uleru, what's yours?"

It took a few chimes for Piraen to readjust to the world. After a few hard blinks and face contortions, his eyesight was the first to recover. As he looked around him, though, his body still pulsed with excitement. Adrenaline pushed against his veins, forcing his body to ache for movement. It was as though his body had wanted him to drown...like that would give it something to do, other than attempting to fly.

His lungs still stung after the first couple dozen rushed breaths. Even though he had managed to get some semblance of control over his inhales, he had no control whatsoever over the exhales. Sometimes they were short, spurting out water in random coughs. Other times they were drawn out, like it was the last breath he would ever take.

Pi sighed (rather, he tried to, but was then interrupted by a few rough coughs) and noted that he was now floating. He only spent a tick of energy looking for the source of his buoyancy. After that, he decided it wasn't worth the effort. He was alive, and he was floating towards the shore.

When he and his watery chariot reached the shore, Piraen flopped gratefully onto the wet sand. Water still lapped over his legs, but there was enough land for Pi to lay down on. That is, if he weren't being held in place by a...hand?

"Uh, I'm..." The boy's voice trailed off while he looked at the chaining-apparatus in question. He tilted his head, watching as light reflected off the hand-shaped object. Funny thing, it looks like water. At first, Pi thought his eyes and ears were still adjusting. Playing tricks on him, as it were. But as he followed the watery outline upwards, he realized he was being held down by a woman. A real-life, breathing, talking water-woman! Piraen shuddered in shock.

"I'm-I'm--I'm naked!" Piraen curled his legs into his chest, attempting to shrink away into the sand. You can't get away from them! They're everywhere! Pi's head slithered behind his knees. He was bracing for the punishment; all adult women wanted to either punish or save you--and she had already saved him. That left only one more reason for her being here, and Piraen did not like it! He hadn't run away from his mother just to be snagged and controlled by another one!

"I mean, really naked!" Pi wriggled nervously, avoiding eye contact with the bizarre creature as he tried to inconspicuously slide away.
