Yair of the Tents and Sons of Rapa
Physical Information
Gender: Male Race: Benshira Human DOB: Born in the season of Summer, Day 10, 484 AV; 30 years old
Physical Description
Yair is a tanned man standing at a height of 5'9" in a healthily toned, though somewhat slender, frame. He is a man of soft, acquiline features with a quiet-footed step and gentle movement that makes him seem at first a plain and unassuming fellow without any particular distinguishing marks, besides his striking green eyes, which flash like a pale frost on a shard of grass. A thick black beard lines his square jaw and unkempt lionine curls fall from his head with enough exuberance to offset his youth and make him look manifold times wiser than he actually is. He stands ever at a perfect posture, which make his more effete frame seem wider than it actually is. As must be noticed at this point, Yair is a man who is always in the process of seeming to be something other than himself, however hard that might be. |
Character Information
Character Concept
Yair is a humble tea merchant - truly! Do not be deceived by his flashy faux-silk robes and his well trimmed beard and his ebony horse of beauteous strength. He is a man of trade who has a hankering for weaving tales within tales of elaborate myths of wise old men, foolish young men, and the strange creatures and magi that come between them. From the twinkle in his eyes, one may begin to suspect that he too has longings for a life full of flash and danger. Yet be not deceived, for Yair's word is Yair's bond, and when he means to trade, he trades upon his honor! And should ever you find yourself short of a pouch of gold, he would trek to the ends of the deserts to find it for you - truly! His passion and his almost exaggerated courtesy define his day-to-day behaviors. As a tradesman, these qualities make him grow boisterous in the pursuit of his sales, and when caught up on the heights of his excitement, he has been known to, in so many words, "enhance" reality for everyone's benefit. Whether this is deliberate or an oversight in the heat of the moment is indeterminate as he can hardly tell himself anymore. Let us not be unambitious, though, for this passion and this courtesy extends far beyond trade but has gone on to affect every aspect of his life, for better or worse. It is a strange thing to see a Benshira so far from home and so adamant on avoiding the subject - and it can be easily supposed that his passion played no small part in this.
Character History
Yair was born in the tent of his father outside of Yahebah in the midst of a religious gathering - far south from what would later become his homeland. He grew up in a semi-nomadic lifestyle, wandering in familiar deserts near Ahnatep, whose redstone formations would often cross over onto Chaktawe Kalanue territory. His family's religious focus often led to travel to Yahebah and whenever they returned to the northern region of Eyktol, his tribe made a point to remain just far enough away from the city of Ahnatep to avoid the strange and distrusted Eypharian city-dwellers. On the other hand, his tribe was much more willing, though equally loath, in interacting with the Kalanue, whose similarly nomadic lifestyle was more comparable to their own tribe. As a child, Yair's father who was priest of his tents, personally negotiated both wars and treaties with Kalanue, as disagreements frequently arose over trade and ownership of flocks throughout their interactions. This led Yair's tribe in particular to have a rather thorny history and attitude toward their questionable neighbors, and they often accused them of barbaric Rakva behaviors.
As the youngest of four sons, with two younger sisters, Yair was not necessarily obligated to join the priesthood, though with his family's profession being in scribal work it was difficult for him to avoid such a fate, as much as he resisted. His sharp tongue and lively behavior won his father's favor, and so even with his family's disapproval, he managed to obtain his father's blessing when he entered work as a general tradesman between Benshira tribes. This allowed him to travel across Eyktol, during which he spent much time exchanging tales and engaging in general mischief, earning himself somewhat of a bad reputation in the south, which he tried mightily to keep from reaching his father's ears in the north.
Tried or no, it must have been successful for Yair ever remained his father's favorite, and his father continued to indulge him with gifts of horses, falcons, and money to fund his trade business - his father even gave his blessing when he boldly asked permission to trade with unbelieving Rakva! He became the first of his tribe in years to open his doors to the Kalanue once again and involve his people with the northern trade-lines.
Alas, as much as Yair labored to keep his reputation in tact in the north, he could not help himself for long, for with trade comes friendship, and with friendship comes romance. When Yair announced his elopement to a Kalanue, his family nearly threw him out to die right there and then, but with his father's mercy, he was given a caravan full of supplies and was sent on his way with his new wife, never to return...
And so many odd years later, Yair has resurfaced far to the north - no wife to be seen, no caravan, but with a horse, a hawk, and a vague but tenacious ambition for better things. |
