AppearanceRace: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Birthday: The 58th of Summer 497
Birthplace: Zeltiva
Appearance: Fyra has long brown hair. She tries to keep it back in a braid, but strands always seem to fall out. She doesn't mind it when her hair becomes messy; she cares little about her appearance and rarely ever bathes. Fyra is often disheveled and dirty. Despite her cousin Nicola's disapproval, Fyra chooses to dress like a boy. Her features are rather boyish; she is skinny and practically curve-less. She stands at a short 5'2". Her face, however, betrays her gender: Fyra has striking feminine cheekbones. Her cheeks are almost always flushed unless she is very afraid. Long eyelashes frame her hazel eyes. One thing she is very particular about is being covered up. She does not want her superstitious city to see the cuts on her palms, or the two long cuts framing her spine. Fyra has a habit of keeping her hands closed. She never takes off her undershirt, even to bathe.
Character ConceptFyra is generally carefree and happy. She enjoys putting in a hard day's work, but hates womanly chores, preferring to labor as a man. Because she refuses to take life slowly, she is often involved in harmless mischief, like that time she convinced her cousins to barrel race through the center of town (she and Col won, of course). Fyra and her cousin, Col, are of the same age and mind. Col tracks the animals, and Fyra hunts them. The two make an excellent team. Nicola, Col's older sister by three years, is not like them. Nicola intends to be married soon. She is constantly lecturing Fyra about being a lady. Fyra pokes fun at Nicola's words, but underneath her tough exterior she is concerned about her future. Fyra knows that marriage would be difficult for her not only because of her temperament, but also because of her scars. She is so uncomfortable revealing her skin that she even bathes with her shirt on. Fyra has never learned how to swim. In addition, Fyra wonders who would want to marry an orphan. She has tried to talk to Col about this concern, but being male he does not completely understand why she needs to marry in the first place. Because of her scars and her ambiguous status, Fyra sometimes feels very alone and wonders if she should stay in Sunberth, or if she should leave like her mother did before her. So far, her familial ties have kept her from leaving her home, but if the right adventure came along, she would probably jump at the opportunity, providing that Col was going along with her. She is reluctant to leave her cousin and best friend. Because of her traumatic experience as a child, Fyra avoids looking at the stars. She finds herself inexplicably attracted to fire; Col likes to joke that she was aptly named.
Character HistoryFyra's mother, Elyna, grew up in Sunberth. The middle child of five, she often felt ignored by her family. Despite her inclinations, her family, especially her older sister Eda, cared greatly for her. They were devastated when Elyna stowed away on a ship headed to Zeltiva. Fyra is not entirely sure what happened to her mother on Zeltiva. She assumes that Elyna fell in love with a wizard and died giving birth to her. Fyra's only memory of her father was their last night together in Zeltiva. Fyra was about to turn five. She remembered that the night was clear and full of stars. She was calmly observing the night sky when, panicked, her father entered the room. Fyra's father warned her to relax, saying that the pain was brief but necessary. Fyra obeyed as he cut her palms and back. She did not know what the Res was, but as it entered her body she remembered feeling intense pain. Fyra must have passed out or forgotten what happened afterwards because the next thing she knew, she was aboard a ship. Zeltiva was already fading into the distance. When the ship landed in Sunberth, Fyra was greeted by her aunt, Eda Bowman. Eda introduced Fyra to her uncle, Nicolas, and her cousins, Col and Nicola. For the past twelve years, Eda and Nicolas have raised Fyra as if she was one of their own. Fyra is close with her other aunts, uncles, and cousins as well, but none as close as Aunt Eda, Uncle Nicolas, Col, and Nicola. Aunt Eda is the only one who knows about Fyra's scars; she severely cautioned Fyra against revealing them. Fyra has no idea what the scars mean, only that they are somehow associated with magic, the mysterious and horrible power that her community shuns.
