Fall 514 AV 35th day 10th bell 29th chime.
The room that the knights had confiscated , and of course paid for, to use for some private training. The room was spacious but not to the point you could do any larger forms of training, nor was it large enough that a large group of knights could comfortably train in at a time. It didn’t bother the Knights much though, as few of them would be free to use the room anyway and the purpose of the room was simply to allow them a place where they could keep their bodies sharp and active, which the vast majority of the knights kept up by waking early and performing physical exercises.
Today the room’s sole occupants were two people, Squire Kreig Messer and his Patron Sera Natasha Druva. Dressed in nothing but their regular clothing the duo held on to their heavy practice long swords with a single handed grip, their feet apart at shoulder length with their front feet tilted at a 45 degree angle with their bodies standing sideways, giving a narrower target. Their swords pointed at each other yet wasn’t raised enough to indicate an active spar.
“Alright Kreig, today’s the day I believe you should learn a new stance” Spoke Sera Natasha, Kreig looked on with confusion as the stance they had taken reminded him of the stance they’d use with a shield, he was quick enough to catch on though that this wasn’t really that type of stance nor was it like they two-handed one they usually trained in.
“Um….Sera, just what stance is this if I may ask” The stance felt alien, not unsurprising really since he’d been used to the two-handed stance. The feeling however was something Kreig was quite used to time and again, he knew he’d get used to it in time with further practice.
“ I’m glad you asked Kreig, this stance is has many names in truth. However it is basically a lunging and cutting stance ” Kreig nodded in acknowledgement to the fact, recognizing that it was supposed to be a specialized stance rather than the general one they used “ Similar to why we train both close quarters and ranged combat Kreig, we also learn to use more advanced and varied techniques to adapt to various situations and gain advantages over our pro. Its not simply enough to know the basics even if you have a firm foundation, as ironclad as they are they can also be easily countered by a more skillful opponent. So it is a necessity that we learn these techniques so that we never fall behind.” Again Kreig nodded in aknowledgemnt, it was like boxing in a sense…. In that unarmed discipline he came to learn that there are various type of boxing styles that ranged from one that relied on massive endurance and strength to ones that relied on one’s guile and speed to create traps and score a devastating counter blow.
Applying this understanding he realized it was the same for swordsmanship “ So this cutting and stabbing stance relies on those sole techniques?” Kreig had asked to which his patron shook her head, realizing that Kreig’s tone was simply wishing to learn if there was more to it.
“ This stance, the water stance henceforth between you and I, is a defensive and stationary stance that relies on graceful movements and parries to create an opening. To those who use the Rapier, a family of swords that specializes in lunging and light cuts, it is known as the ‘Gentlemans’ stance.” She paused as she raised waved her sword around in a short and quick cutting motions then a series of quick stabs “ It is a precise style, one with an equal offensive stance that I’ll teach to you once you’ve mastered this stance”
“I’d rather start with the more offensive one to be honest” Kreig admitted, from what he understood this defensive stance needed him to be fluid in his movements, quick and precise as his patron said. It also meant that rather than an application of strength he needed to apply quick redirecting movements with the blade as well as more dodging. At that moment he realized why it was called the water stance and he sported a small grin, finding it amusing that his patron gave it an appropriate name.
“ I can understand that Kreig, but to learn the next stance you would also need to learn this. As it is the merger of the basic and water stance. Without this the next stance would simply be more difficult to learn.”
“ I understand Sera” Kreig said, resigning himself to the fact as he knew better than to object. His mind saying it was simply something he had to do to get stronger as a warrior ‘Still, it sounds like quite a dandy style”
