Event/Holiday/Legend/System (whichever apply-- I'm not quite certain): The Matching
Date: Sporadic, as determined by the Stone (detailed below)
Details:

The Matching appears to be a divine interlude in the lives of the Akalak and Konti people. This tradition, which seems to occur 'according to need', is best described through the story of its founding:

Up near Mura, a group of Konti women had taken to frequenting the sacred Crystal Cavern in the hope of invoking Avalis' aid. These Konti implored the goddess for children, for the sake of the Konti race, for the opportunity for the all-female community to expand their families and successfully bring more new daughters into the world.

One day after prayer, a Konti with the gift of opportunistic intuition (a seer of sorts) found herself compelled to go further, further into the caves than she had ever been before. The other women followed, trusting her gift, but became concerned when they traveled deeper and deeper into the chill, damp depths, bypassing even the most resilient of the caves' flora and fauna. Some wished to go back and return later with light and warmer clothing and other supplies, but the seer insisted that the task be done. The others complied faithfully, following the seer's every seemingly-random twist and turn, though it was very possible they might all be lost in the expansive caverns.

Eventually the seer came to a pool of water in the near pitch-dark coldness of the caves, which appeared shallow. But, stepping forward into it, she found that the water was much deeper than first thought, and soon most of her body became submerged. Despite the others' reservations, the woman continued to follow the signs of her gift, swimming forward in the unnaturally-freezing water and leaving the others behind, until some time later she came to a halt at the icy back wall of the cavern. There she dove, and swam straight down along the wall.

The others remained in the dark silence of the crystal caves at the edge of what they now knew to be a gigantic underground lake. Some prayed, knowing this to be the will of their mother-goddess; others were restless at the amount of time their friend stayed underwater, and they wondered if something had happened to the seer beneath the still, flat surface. What felt like a bell passed, then another, and still the seer did not return. Finally, the women decided gravely to enter the water themselves, in order to locate their lost companion.

No sooner had the first approached the waterside than the seer returned to the surface. She swam slowly back to the others, who urged her to come from the cold and share in their warmth and dryness. They were astonished to find that when the seer returned to the shore the water did not ripple around her but instead seemed benign, as she emerged from the lake neither wet nor cold. With minimal discussion the group turned to leave, simply glad that they were all reunited again.

Once they had finally found their way outside of the Cavern, the Konti were astounded to discover that an entire year had gone by while they wandered within the caves. Even more amazed were they when the seer turned towards them and held aloft a stone she had discovered laying gently on the very bottom of the chill cavern lake.

The stone, appearing to be made of the same vision-water-imbued crystal of the rest of the Cavern's formations, was a perfect sphere, and likewise perfectly clear when viewed in the bright light of day. Unlike glass it would not break or shatter when tested, nor would its flawless surface become marred by scratches. All of the stone's qualities were otherworldly: it at once seemed both ponderously heavy and wondrously light, it gave off a radiating aura of well-being, security, and peace, and it was warm to the touch and smoothly soft like a newborn baby's skin. At once the women knew what it must be: a gift from their goddess, a blessing that was the answer to their many prayers.

With a combination of observation and the use of the Konti's natural abilities, the group soon encountered the vague purpose of the stone. The seer was a wife of an Akalak, and when they both pressed their hands to the Stone, they felt alight with a glow of mutual affection and compatibility. The Stone promised them that their love was true, and seemed to affirm in their hearts that they were a perfect match for the production of both Konti and Akalak children. Oddly enough, though other couples in Mura tested the Stone in a similar way, it was only the visiting Akalak and their wives that gained such a reaction. It was determined then that the Stone was not merely from Avalis but was surmised, also, to be a gift from Laviku (considering the manner in which it had been found) and intended not only for the Konti but also for the Akalak, their brother-race.

Many theories were thrown out about which gods and goddesses had had a hand in the making of the Stone, and why the Akalak had been blessed along with the Konti. Most agreed that the Akalak had been favored due to their own yearning for healthy children in order to further their race. Some insisted that Laviku's hand in the matter was due to a debt he felt for his Sea having swallowed up the first Akalak city Valkalah, and others were certain that this indicated that the loss of the Akalak city was somehow linked to that race's subsequent impotency and stunted reproduction. Whether or not these rumors were true was never settled; what was settled was that the Akalak would share equally in the rewards of the Stone, and that the Konti and Akalak would devise a method of determining its true use.

But before the two races were able to organize a meeting of city leaders to discuss the matter, the Stone presented the answer itself. While remaining untouched it began to glow, and after trial and error it was determined that the Stone brightened when it was transported in the direction from Mura towards Riverfall. In an attempt to understand its workings, the Konti and Akalak relayed the Stone all the way to the glorious waterfall city, where the Stone shone stunningly bright until finally it was quenched in the waters of the Suvan.

The Konti seer who had swum to discover the Stone then had another inspiration, and ordered that all interested and eligible Akalak and all similarly-spirited Konti (a large number of which had made the journey from Mura) might gather in two separate lines in the Suvan, centered on either side of the Stone. When the lines were formed, she then ordered the first Konti woman to hold the Stone in her hands, and for all the Akalak taking part in the ritual to approach one by one, and similarly place their hands upon it. For a while there seemed to be no response from the Stone, and some voiced doubts about the method. But the seer was infinitely patient and self-assured, and instructed the two races to continue... until the eleventh Akalak male laid his hands on the Stone above the Konti's, and the Stone began to glow.

The seer then declared the Stone's true purpose: the perfect fate-Matching of an Akalak and Konti. The Stone, born of the vision-water and guided by Avalis' own powers of divination, seemed to have its own magical properties. It had been given in order to grace both races with the knowledge of the Akalak-Konti couples that would be most compatible for reproduction, and even for life-long love and relationships.

In this way, the Stone might help both races bear more healthy children, and increase their meager populations (as there were only 5000 current Akalak, and 2000 current Konti). In the Matching, each Konti woman would take a turn holding the Stone and be approached by the line of Akalak; this would happen until her Akalak Match came forth and the Stone glowed. It was possible for no Match to be found for some Konti or Akalak, though many were successfully paired.

After the first Matching, it was determined that the Stone would reside in Mura until the time came again that it awakened. The Konti would watch over the Stone, and when it showed signs of soft luminescence, their race would know it was time again to bring the Stone down from their city to the home of the Akalak, where the Matching could take place once more. The Matching was not required as mandatory for every member of either race, as that was thought to bring bad fortune on the pairings; only Akalak and Konti willing and able to search for their Match were included. Similarly, the Stone only initiated the Matching when there seemed to be a greater need to repopulate, often skipping years. Typically, however, the Matching (if it was to happen that year), would occur sometime approximately midway between the Konti's celebration of Lover's Day (on the 65th of Spring) and the Akalak's Festival of Love (on the 45th of Winter).

Thistle & Clover’s

Image

Thistle’s & Clover’s is located on the third tier of the city near to the Raven’s perch. A short stone pathway leads to a rectangle wooden door which will ring a small bell when opened or closed. Two windows almost the same length as the outside walls reveal manikins always dressed in the most beautiful outfit the store has on offer that particular day.

Thistle & Clover’s is never messy or crowded. In fact, when walking through the wooden entrance of this quaint little one story clothing shop, you will see everything the shop has to offer neatly spread out before you in order of gender, colour, and style. The shop is shaped like a rectangle, with men’s clothing hanging from shelves on the left, and womens clothing on the right. Underneath these shelves boots and shoes are lined up on the floor on little wooden shelves. Towards the front of the store the most exquisite clothing for formal occasions can be found, and towards the back the clothing is the cheaper and more casual attire. Down the middle of the store there are three black wooden tables that hold odds and ends, shoes, accessories, belts and clothing that does not fit on the shelves.

The whole store is warmly coloured, with plain white walls and wooden floors and celling. It’s very brightly lit and spacious. At the back of the store there is a counter where a cashier will stand, Two changing rooms for trying on garments as well as a ‘Studio’ door which leads into a sewing studio where there are always employees making custom orders and taking customers measurements. This room, in comparison, is chaos. There are shelves of half finished clothes and materials on one sheld, sewing machine’s, needles and martials on another. There are measuring taps, jewels and decorations strewn about tables. A small stage is left for a customer to stand and have their measurements taken.

When visiting this store you may come to the counter with something you’ve picked out, or request a specially made garment of your design. The Cashiers are always friendly and helpful to customers and the store is know for its upbeat and friendly atmosphere, and good customer service, as well as it’s skilled tailors, shoemakers and seamstresses

Personality Thistle is a gentle woman with a golden tongue and a passion for all things fashion. She likes bright colours and dresses and is particularly skilled at making customers feel special about their purchases and themselves. Since she is very busy managing the store, she hires a lot of Tailors to create custom-made items, but when you do see her she is manning the counter or walking around the store asking customers if she can help them with anything. Thistle is quite serious, and is very good at handling business, so she single handedly manages employees, stock, profit, and inventory for the store. Thistle will always greet you with a smile and make you're you are fully catered for.

Personality: Clover is the stronger of the two, having originally wanted to be a warrior or a traveler. Her interest in fashion was secondary but when she saw how much it meant to her twin sister and she knew Thistle couldn’t have begun a business all by herself. Being a lot more independent than her sister, Clover tends to spend most of her time training Tailors or making personal creations for the store in the sewing room, and very rarely will she come out and work at the counter. If you do see her in the store, she’s probably either restocking shelves, or (Gods forbid) confronting a shoplifter. Getting on her bad side is genrally not a good idea for your health, as she has a very explosive temper, and is extremely protective of her sister, and her store.

Have Active Threads In Riverfall: 1 pt per thread per Season

In regards to the Perk Points system, are we still doing this? I haven't seen anyone documenting these for a long while. If by some chance this is still operational, I would like to tally up my threads for Summer and have them recorded. This would be a total of 18 for me, on account of a busy season.

Portmaster's Office

Image

The Portmaster's Office is something of an oddity in the stone-constructed city of Riverfall, as it and its surrounding docks are made almost entirely out of wood. The original creators of this unusual building --an Akalak pair named Artem and Irya Vogel-- were seamen, forced to retire to their home city of Riverfall after an injury left them unfit for captaining their vessel. But Artem and Irya remained captivated by their old life on the Suvan, refusing to move on and forget.

To feel close to their past, the pair decided to create their home as close to the Bay as possible. Wood was used as the primary building material in order to recreate the feel of the ship they had sailed upon for most of their long lives. It is said that in particularly hard wind the Office creaks and moans like a large ship at sea, the cream canvas curtains of the building snapping and taut like a swelling sail. Some visitors have even claimed to feel the floors tip and sway beneath their feet.

Being so close to the Bay and with its windows left wide open, the Office's many floors smell of the salt and spray of the sea. All furnishings inside are leather, wood, and rope, and it's not uncommon to find a wind chime clanging sorrowfully from a window or in a corner; The Wind Catcher (Artem and Irya's beloved ship) had been known to host so many chimes that it sang of music at all times of day and night, announcing its presence for miles upon the peculiar roaring silence of the Sea.

The Office nowadays is used by the presiding Portmaster as he sees fit-- that being Artem and Irya's son Moshe and, by default, his soul-brother Kanja. Moshe and Kanja have followed closely in their fathers' footsteps: the Office is used to welcome and dock ships, hold paper records of all known dockworkers and shipping transactions within Riverfall, hold a battered collection of strange or old ship parts or artifacts, rent out rowboats and the like for entertainment purposes, and will sometimes be used to host sailors in need of a place to stay.

Upon entrance of the Bay and use of the Offices' roomy docks, one of three to five Akalak dockworkers will approach the captain of the ship. Once the captain is located, he will be asked to show proper documentation for his vessel and any wares or passengers he is transporting. The crew and any passengers on the ship will be given the customary welcome scroll to the city and allowed on their way. The captain will be detained until he or she fills out the proper forms for docking, which are always checked over by either Moshe or Kanja. Once the paperwork is completed and the ship's docking fees collected, the captain will be free to go.

Name: Moshe and Kanja Vogel
Race: Akalak
DoB: 30th of Summer, 377 AV
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Dockmaster, Portmaster
Skills: Shipbuilding 80, Musical Instrument: Ocarina 66, Organization 43, Sailing 28
Gnosis: 2 Oceanus

Much like their fathers before them, Moshe and Kanja have given Riverfall as a society a wide berth, rarely venturing far into the city. The two will likely be found near water, preferring to stay at the Office they inherited, hang around the docks or beach, or go swimming or sailing. Moshe is the serious, logical thinker and the dominant soul, perfect for the role of Portmaster with his organizational mind and ship expertise. He and his Akalak dockworkers can often be hired for repairs should a vessel come to port damaged or in need of resupply. Kanja, on the other hand, is more philosophical and flighty, with a love of the ocean only paralleled by that of music, particularly his ocarina. He holds many of Moshe's interests but simply doesn't take things as seriously, preferring to remain 'free' of the hassle of hard work in favor of relaxation and fun. Rumors have circulated since the boys' birth that they are sons of an Otani, whom their fathers fell in love with while sailing the Suvan. Kanja's personality has only served to foster these rumors; Moshe, of course, flatly denies such a ridiculous lie.

The various dockworkers, like Moshe and Kanja, use the Office as their residence as well as their workplace, and can be counted upon to greet and inform newcomers to the city, help Moshe and Kanja with any necessary tasks, and also help maintain the large Office property and dock area.

SERVICES
DOCK FEES
Dock fees are based upon size of ship and duration of stay.
SMALL-- 1 sm, plus 1 cm for each ton of cargo /day
1 sm + X(1 cm) = day's fee, where X = # of tons of cargo
Small vessels include the Casinor, Catamaran, Barge, Fishing Boat, Khnor, Palivar, and Saique, or any vessel that holds between 0 and 50 tons of cargo.

MEDIUM-- 2 sm, plus 1 cm for each ton of cargo /day
2 sm + X(1 cm) = day's fee, where X = # of tons of cargo
Medium vessels include the Kersha, Sloop, Cromster, Brigantine, Navar, and Schooner, or any vessel that holds more than 50 and 100 or less tons of cargo.

LARGE-- 3 sm, plus 1 cm for each ton of cargo /day
3 sm + X(1 cm) = day's fee, where X = # of tons of cargo
Large vessels include the Fluyt, Pinnace, Mizaharan, and Galleon, or any vessel that holds more than 100 tons of cargo.

BOAT RENTALS
Rowboat-- 5 gm/day.
Ship's boat-- 10 gm/day.
Uiara's Tears (Catamaran, manned by Moshe and Kanja)-- 20 gm/day.

The Office docks hold 3 rowboats, a ship's boat, and a Catarmaran. All of these boats are the property of Moshe and Kanja; the Catamaran, named Uiara's Tears, is their personal sailing vessel. The rowboats and ship's boat can be rented at any time during the day's light-- the rental is always for the remaining length of that day until night falls. By sunset, all boats are expected to be returned in their proper condition.

Uiara's Tears can be rented out depending on Moshe and Kanja's availability; only they themselves are allowed to crew the boat. If not too busy, they will take paying passengers out for a ride or to visit any of the various landmarks or islands within Riverfall's general region. They will only take passengers out for a week at longest, having responsibilities in the city. Should they be sailing or otherwise absent from their workplace, their hired dockworkers are capable of tending to most of the Office's many needs.

ARTIFACT ACQUISITION
Should a Riverfall citizen or visitor have ships or ship supplies in good condition for sale, Moshe and Kanja are generally willing to do business. However, their true hobby --like their fathers' before them-- is the collection of unusual ship- or Sea-related pieces, a large number of which are on display within the Office. Depending on the piece, the Akalak brothers may or may not be interested in buying. Price will vary depending on rarity, condition, level of intrigue, usefulness, and other such variables.
PM your ST for price discussion.

REPAIRS
Moshe is a skilled shipbuilder, and as such is qualified for doing repairs on most any vessel that has become damaged on its journeys. Repair costs will depend on the damage to the ship and the amount of labor and time needed to fix it.
PM your ST for price discussion.
NoteJust realized there's already a shipwright in town, but Moshe mostly does repairs or works on his own stuff so I don't think it's that big of a deal. If it is, I can revise and edit that out or something.

SHIP SUPPLIES
The Office also offers supplies at the usual price for any ship that requires them.

HIRING
Moshe and Kanja are open to providing employment opportunities to those who seem reliable and trustworthy. Kanja is always looking for people to take some of his responsibilities; Moshe puts up with his laziness only because hiring new workers allows the brothers to spend more time honing their main skills, or picking up odd sailing jobs.

DOCK LABORER
No needed skills; pay is 1 -2 gm/day. Some captains who dock at the Office ask the Portmaster for aid in finding cheap workers to unload and load ship supplies, or do other such simple-but-labor-intensive tasks. Laborers may also be tasked with gathering supplies for the Office, or for Moshe and Kanja personally.

OFFICE AND DOCK MAINTENANCE
No needed skills; pay is 1 - 4 gm/day. Time will be spent working with or apart from the other dockworkers, mainly by cleaning and caring for the property of the Office: the house, docks, and rental boats. Gardening and other aesthetic tasks may be a part of the workload.

OFFICE CLERK
No needed skills; pay is 1 - 5 gm/day. Moshe and Kanja may personally go over every captain's docking form, but said forms need to be carefully filed and kept track of. So do the many purchases made by and for the proprietors. Office clerks may also be used as couriers within Riverfall for delivering messages, or be used to research for information on any new items that have been acquired for the Office's large collection.

SAILOR
Should have some skill in sailing; 1 - 7 gm/day. Like with the dock laborers, some captains ask Moshe and Kanja for recommendations for a good crew. Riverfall does trade with various places throughout the year, so steady sailing work based out of the city should not be difficult to find. Moshe and Kanja themselves hire sailors, too, to man the rental boats should a customer need help on their outing.

SHIPWRIGHT'S ASSISTANT
Should have some skill in carpentry, construction, or shipbuilding; pay is 5 gm/day. Moshe is always looking for skilled craftsmen who know their way around a ship to help him with repairs or with his own shipbuilding projects. Novices will be accepted as apprentices and are expected to learn from mistakes and become useful. Any shipwright that demonstrates negative qualities will promptly be let go.

This is a write up for my new business that I hope to open in Riverfall shortly!

Baltiste Armoring

Image

Baltiste Armoring is located in the second tier of the city, built right into the cliffs of the Plunge Pool bay. The outside of the shop is very austere with a plain wooden door and the only advertisement for the shop being a metal sign forged by the titular owner of Baltiste Armoring. Inside, the shop area of Baltiste Armoring reflects the design ascetic of the outside. What little furniture populates the shop is simple but well made. Connected directly to the shop is the smithy, the areas defined by a stone wall with a large arch in the center in order for Zamora to keep an eye on the shop. At the back of the smithy is the storage room which also serves as vault for goods in progress or waiting for pick up. All together Baltiste Armoring is a warm place where the utility and craftsmanship of the building reflect the work created within.

Jia's Place is a magical emporium that specializes in all kinds of magic and magic related goods. Carved into the cliffs and featuring two stories, it is the go-to place for anyone wishing to obtain scrolls, common books, or relatively common magical items. The few windows are kept clear to let the natural light in, while candles are placed carefully around the store for extra light when the windows don't provide enough. The outside is marked by a wooden sign painted in dark jewel tones, though the store could be easily missed if one doesn't know what they're looking for.

The entire store gives off a cozy feeling, and while Jia keeps it clean to the best of her abilities, it still manages to collect a fine layer of dust. The rooms are not for anyone particularly claustrophobic, being cluttered - yet organized, to a point - and a bit stuffy. The stock itself is well maintained, with new things coming in every season. Both stories are stocked to the brim in books shipped in from Lhavit or Zeltiva, the most common being the Treval Codex and just plain blank books. A small section of the store is dedicated to mages' staves, another is dedicated to robes, and scattered throughout the store are materials related to philtering and anything else you could think of.

Jia herself can be found almost anywhere in the store, often sitting in a chair and reading one of the books for sale. She always listens for the bell on the door, however, and will quickly rush to aid anyone who comes in. The store is not very busy, but it sees its fair share of customers. Jia has been known to offer to tell the fortune of a select few of the people who come in, but this is a rare occurrence.

Many people would describe Jia as strange, and they would be right - the woman is eccentric. While appearing like any other Konti woman, aside from the often mis-matched patterns and cloth that make up her clothing, many people feel that there's something a little off. Regardless, she's a kind, friendly face to see, often offering up unneeded and unasked-for advice to the customers that find their way to her 'little' store - most often mages. She does tend to get a bit loud, and more often than not begins to ramble on into stories before suddenly getting back on topic, but she means well.

[Riverfall] The Suggestion Box

The Crystal Rose

Image

The Crystal Rose is, as its name seems to imply, a very upscale restaurant. It is easy to find, located on the lower level of Riverfall, on the edge of the Plunge Pool Bay. It has a beautiful view of the waterfall, and is a popular date spot. The outside is white stone and brick, and there is a large sign featuring a bouquet of roses in a crystal vase located above the entrance. The roof is domed and the building itself comprised of octogonal sections.

The inside of the restaurant itself is a work of art - stained glass skylights and large windows grace the walls, and on the tables are the finest in silverware and table linens. Mosaics of beautiful gardens are on the walls, and the entire room is lit by the skylights and red candles placed in aesthetically pleasing arrangements, giving the entire restaurant a romantic air. The most prominent features, however, are the vases overflowing with flowers that make their homes in the center of the tables, the most common flowers being roses which are tastefully arranged by Iyav. There are many differently sized tables for differently sized groups, from small tables with only a couple chairs to large, circular tables fit for almost six or seven fully grown Akalak.

An outside eating area sits right outside the waterfall, fed by the Bluevein River, on a patio of white stone that matches the building itself. The area is shaded by white cloth hanging from the building and onto a tall, wrought-iron fence. The tables outside are wrought-iron as well, with the tops being inlaid with semi-precious gems and marble. Vases, though much smaller than the ones inside, are still prominent, drawing the inside and outside together. Butterflies like to visit the patrons who decide to sit outside, attracted to the flowers. Bees are also attracted to the flowers, though they tend to visit the emptier tables and do not often bother the patrons. The outside area is closed in winter, late autumn, and on particularly stormy or windy days. It is obvious when it is closed because all of the furniture and the white cloth hangings are put away.

Upon entrance to the restaurant, one is either quickly seated inside or outside, or located to a waiting area of plush chairs and couches near a small fireplace, by Iyav. They are then waited on by a waiter or waitress as soon as possible.

Iyav and Weniv appear like any other Akalak, well-toned and blue-skinned. They, however, found more joy in less martial pursuits, training as a Vinter Bluevein Winery soon after becoming an adult before starting work in the Crystal Rose. Iyav, the light brother, is friendly and personable, though he generally puts others' needs above his own, even when outside of the Crystal Rose. Weniv is quieter, and a bit less approachable, and he often chastises Iyav for not being a little bit more selfish. Both, however, love their job, and can easily be found whenever they are needed.

[Riverfall] The Suggestion Box

(Submission for the new deer species on the Endrykas Spring 515 calendar.)

ImageBelrin deer were almost literally stumbled upon in Spring 515 AV, and are thus far only known to exist in northwestern Cyphrus. They are a small breed, generally 3' tall at the shoulders and 75-150 lbs in weight. They have a compact build, with narrow face, stocky body, and short legs. Males grow short antlers, not more than 4" long, which do not branch but form straight spikes. Unlike many of their cousins in the Sea of Grass, these deer rely not on speed for escape, but on camouflage. Their coats have a limited ability to change color, taking on yellower shades of green and brown and imitating basic patterns such as the vertical striping of grass stalks. They can blend in readily with tall and medium grasses, which are their typical habitat, but have less advantage in shortgrass, woodland, scrubland, and riparian areas. When spooked, these deer zig-zag much like rabbits in the hope of losing their pursuer, then dash towards likely cover and freeze to blend in. Belrin deer do not gather in herds, but may be found in small family groups of a mated pair and up to 2 young fawns.

The single most notable feature of the Belrin deer are their chameleon pelt, which prevailing opinion considers to have originated with the Great Djed Storm of 512. The pelt only remains changeable for about 30 chimes after death, its responses progressively slowing until the pattern freezes altogether. Because of this residual activity, most pelts brought in have muddy solid colors, reflecting whatever the carcass was carried on. Preserving the camouflage pattern requires efficient skinning in the field and maintaining the pelt in an appropriate setting until the desired pattern becomes fixed. Additionally, the effect lies in the hair, not the hide; leather made from these deer is no more remarkable than that from any other species.

[Riverfall] The Suggestion Box

The Mosaic Tower is only outdone by the towers to the Gods in height and a fixture among those roofs of Riverfall which aim to touch the sky. Not simply because of its height but because every story was created in a different style. Rock gives way to brick, plaster and timberframe. Rectangular windows become arched and the fashions more extravagant as it rises upwards. Every generation of architects working on it has sought to outdo those who came before them and were their teachers in turn. However, the tower has stood without an addition for over a century, the last person to add a story to the Mosaic Tower being its current day master, Thuliss Maravin.

Probably the most relied-upon studio of architects in Riverfall, the Mosaic Tower is as old as the city itself. Its history is mirrored in the shape of the tower. The ground floor is like a small fortress carved from the rock of Riverfall: a squat rectangle with crenellations and windows like arrow slits. From its center springs a hexagonal structure made of evenly cut slabs of rock. Three more six-sided stories follow, another one made from rock, though the slabs are finer than below and statues of Gods and Goddesses grace each corner. Blood red brick is the material of the next level, generally referred to as the ring as it bisects the length of the tower with the stark red. The last hexagonal floor is made of brick again but plastered white as is the next, much smaller one which is octagonal in shape however. The remaining space is given to a wraparound balcony according a full view of the city. The octagon, a lightweight timberframe construction underneath the plaster, is the last accessible part of the tower. The two 'floors' beyond are mere vanity pieces: another octagon that is more glass than plastered timberframe and Thuliss Maravin's own masterpiece, a crown-like structure of wood and ivory laid out in flimsy patterns only discernible from the balcony below. Rumor has it that he chose these materials since they wouldn't support another structure on top of them and thus leave his addition to the tower as the final piece of the mosaic forevermore.

The ground floor features a wide reception area opening from the entrance towards the middle of the building where a solid cast iron staircase spirals upwards. There are offices for more private meetings to either side of the lobby and beyond lie the (not publically accessible) offices of the clerks and pursers and other menial staff which allow the actual architects to exercise their profession. The lobby itself is presented as a small gallery of plans and wooden models of various Riverfall buildings, illuminated by shafts of daylight routed through nigh-impossible mirror and glass contraptions installed in the ceiling. Beyond these exhibits are walls adorned with murals and bas reliefs. The entire room is nothing but a celebration of the art of building.

The next floor houses various common rooms of which the central one is an eating area, more of a break room by day, but able to be turned into a fine dining area with a bit of dusting and the good tablecloth. The rest of the area is given to various supply closets, a small reading room, an archive and of course a lavatory. On the third and fourth floor is where much of the actual work gets done. Here are the workshops of the various architects, except Thuliss Maravan and his right hand, the Ilsur Rawl who dwell on the fifth.

The sixth floor finally is mostly used for observing the city from its balcony. It allows the architects to learn the strengths and weaknesses and find both the pleasing and the unpleasing sides of the city's layout and its buildings. This is also where Thuliss Maravin or one of his Fellows will teach Apprentices their craft. While the view from the Mosaic Tower is known to be grand and certainly coveted by many, it is not open to but the most august patrons of the Tower.
