Loess

Appearance

Race: Inarta
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthday: Season of Fall, Day 14, year 495
Birthplace: Wind Reach
Current Home: An Eypharian owned merchant trade ship

Appearance: Loess is the smallest of his three siblings. His skin is as pale as his mother's, and with the freckles of his father. Yet his body has seen seasons of sickness. Loess lacks the stamina typical of an Inarta, the rugged energy Wind Reach requires of its people. He has short, auburn hair and light blue eyes. Beyond that and his average height, friends recognize no other similarity between him and his family. Many who know Loess consider him a runt, prone to exhaustion the body and mind.

Character Concept and History

Due to Loess' small frame, he was not as suited to life in Wind Reach. The harsh, frigid elements of Wind Reach drained his stamina regularly, and he worried for his ability to provide for himself in the future. Inartan caste is decided on strength, most notably acknowledging those who survive well and master their lives. A anxious child, Loess adopted the cautiousness of his tripling sisters. He even avoided riding eagles. When other boys played daredevil, he learned glasswork from his uncle, or explored caves with his sisters.

On his eighth birthday, his mother gifted each of the triplets a family heirloom. Loess received his great grandfather's looking glass. Crafted from volcanic rock and some foreign metals, the mirror has seen over 100 years of . Its original masterwork, though, has been significantly weathered.

By age 15, he was quite proficient as glasswork. A relative offered him an apprenticeship in glasswork at the age of 13. But, over time, the three quarter year winters put him into a chilled depression. Lung disease's early stages started around the start of his apprenticeship, and Loess struggled to stay motivated in further developing his profession.

Loess holds on to one distinct, fond memory. The day after his 9th birthday, an eccentric trading vessel visited Skyinarta's single main port. It was highly decorated in sunny colored tapestries. A crowd of Inartan people traveled to exchange refined glass, and in many forms. This memory is still clear in his mind, partly due to the six-armed merchants on the boat, partly due to the enthusiasm of the Wind Reach artisans, and partly due to the fact that a young Inartan man begged to be taken on the vessel as an apprentice. The pale youth kneeled to one of the Eypharian merchants, and was surprisingly let aboard. Although permanently leaving Wind Reach is taboo among its citizens, Loess knew he someday might make the same choice as that young man. Let his sisters freeze on this rock.

Summer of 514, the sunny vessel returned; Loess abandoned his home. He offered the captain work for food and rest, even if that meant being a slave. Luckily, that wasn't necessary. The ship's Eypharian owner and Svefran captain allowed him to board. He would accompany a the team of merchants, helping seal deals and studying trades in his spare time. No wage was promised, as his residence would only be allowed if in a year's time he was up to the owner's standards. For now, Loess would be warmer, healthier, and, for the most part, safer.

The ship's name is "The Winder."

The Winder

General: The Winder is an Eypharian owned and Svefran piloted trade ship. The differing natures of the ship's inhabitants, specifically related to ownership, leads to many arguments among its members. Although the ship is technically Eypharian owned, it would not run without its Svefran captain or crew.

Specifications: Below are the current specifications of The Winder

Ship Type - Saique
Weaponry - Two ballistas
Sails - Square and lateen
Max load - 10 crew members, 5 guests, 50 ton cargo
Designation - Merchant vessel

Crew: This list ranks the crew in executive position at sea:

1 Captain (Svefran)
1 Lead Merchant / Ship Owner (Eypharian)
9 Deckhands / Bodyguards / Advisors at Sea (Mixed, mostly Svefran)
3 Merchant Advisors (Eypharian)
1 Apprentice Merchant Advisor (Loess, Inartan)

Persuasion 10 SP 10 Novice
Reading 5 SB 5 Novice
Geology 10 SP 10 Novice
Glass-work 15 SP 15 RB 30 Competent

Relevant skill descriptions

Loess' Hypnotism: In seasons of cold and sickness, Loess might spend hours of time staring into his great grandfather's looking glass. He developed a magical quirk from these times of introspection. Loess found himself able to diffuse heated conversations, convince people of untrue facts, or make himself unnoticed in crowds or loud areas. While his hypnotism is more potent when eye contact is made, he primarily relies on mannerisms and physical touch.

Loess' Persuasion: If you need to ask for help a lot, you will eventually become good at it. Loess is just as bold as his sisters, but not in the same ways. He is true to his mind, and cares a lot about connecting to people on a personal basis. His candor allows him a level of persuasiveness and genuineness unique to High Reach, but still he has a lot to learn about how and when to be honest.

Loess' Reading: Most of Loess' reading has been developed on The Winder. He is new to reading, but is a good learner and has high hopes.

Loess' Geology: Exploring caves as a child and learning about Skyinarta's geology has proved invaluable to Loess already as a glassworker. How he will use this ability in the future is unknown to him.

Loess' Glasswork: This is Loess' main claim to fame in Skyinarta, but may not prove to be as valuable far away from the mountain's source of lustrous volcanic glass. While he can study glasswork out of books or form the vast inventory of The Winder, he will be unable to practice the profession directly while at sea. Will he abandon the trade, or find another marketable use for it?
